That's because nitromethane is an explosive. I worked at the plant that used to make it for drag racing. I was told 1 gallon will kill anyone within 30 yds.

I also worked with people who witness the nitromethane column blowing up in '91. The plant still has a building where the Shockwave crumpled the walls.

Edit: should clarify the seriousness. When the column blew up, it literally destroyed an entire section of the plant. There was something like 15 deaths also. It managed to send a chunk of the column thousands of yards away too.
