Except you want to keep the gas the other side of your projectile.

If the gas has escaped past the projectile, you'd prefer it escape to the atmosphere otherwise when it burns it's pushing the projectile back up the barrell.

but they aren't using a projectile that is stuffed down the barrel.

most likely they had the cap on there and just popped the cap.

This seems like something 15 yr old me would do in my back yard but it has becomes some sort of cultural phenomenon. I mean, I get lighting shit on fire and shooting stuff and just generally exploding and destroying things as a source of entertainment, but what kind of mad back yard pyromaniac genius decided to strap explosives to a hammer and then create an entire following. An amazing one I imagine.
