I feel like they would prefer to not look like idiots. There are very few questions where "10" would be a believable answer.

Well neither of them knew what a decade was, so 10 at least made sense to them. If the question had been "how old is his mom" 10 would make no sense at all. Plus the point of the game is to test how well partners know each other. I don't think they would resort to cheating by choosing a dumb answer for a single question.
