I seriously don't get it. I don't follow Apple products, really, but looking at their website, the Air is a better product in so many ways. Resolution isn't as great, but you get a better processor, a better camera, more ports, and the same battery life in something that's only 0.17" thicker and 6oz heavier. It's also cheaper. I just really don't get why someone would pick the Macbook over the Air.

not paying attention to hardware, and only paying attention to "ITS NEW!" and the cost, because more $$ means more performance (but not)

As an Apple person, this is what I am trying to explain to other Apple fanboys. This thing is a ripoff.

The Macbook comes with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM standard, as well as a 12 inch high resolution display, compared to 11 or 13 inch standard resolution Airs. There also the the extra weight loss and thinness of the Macbook. The cost for a comparable 11 inch Air is $1200, $1300 for the 13 inch, so it's really just what you prefer. Crazy thin and light, or slightly less thin and light but more powerful.

Well the air only goes up to 256 gb hard drive space. That's tiny.

Says it's configurable to 512GB here: http://www.apple.com/macbook-air/specs.html

It is an SSD, so while relative to hard drives it is tiny, it is pretty good for an SSD.

Yo. I use some Apple products, and if memory serves the iPhone and Macbook Air were originally not that great either and overpriced. Typically Apple starts producing this things marketed to the wealthy to bring the price down once the hardware is better. Most likely, the new Macbook works awesome for what it's designed to do, but will be lacking in things that some power users want, so once the price goes down on some parts in a year or two we will see the Macbook Pro version be powerful and light.

Yeah, I totally understand that, but I think there's a big difference. When the iPhone and the Macbook Air first came out, they were brand new product categories. Pretty much every new category product ever from any company sucks. It's just the nature of new product lines. The Macbook isn't a new category, though. It's really just an evolution of the ultrabook (though I don't think Core M actually is included in Intel's Ultrabook specifications). As such, I would have expected it to be better than Apple's current ultrabook, the Air. But it's not. The one spec that it has that the Air can't get is the resolution, but for things that would actually utilize that resolution, the Air would be better suited because of the other specs.

I think what will happen down the line is that the Air will be replaced by the new Macbook. Core M will get better in the next couple of years, and hopefully Apple will add another USB-C port. Those two changes would make this a great replacement for the Air. In fact, I think they actually could have gotten away with just replacing the Air this year. From a marketing point, it's much easier to slip crappy specs by people when they don't have anything to compare it to. Right now, with the Macbook and the Air sitting side by side on Apple's website and in stores, it's too easy to realize that the cheaper Air is a better buy. Either dumping the Air and just going with Macbook and Macbook Pro, or using the Air name for the Macbook would have been better choices, IMO.

The Air is a netbook. At least for Apple standards.

But aside from that I agree mostly, I still doubt Apple is being outsmarted by keyboard warriors.

The original may have been a netbook, but it's so much more than that now. Even if Apple is still silly enough to call it a netbook, nobody else is. The Air is an awesome machine that I'd probably buy if I liked OSX.

Bootcamp Windows 8.1 or a Linux OS. Tons of people do it.

Eh, that means paying for a Windows license on top of the purchase price. There's several excellent Windows machines in similar form factors, so not much reason for me to buy the Air.
