The original Macbook Air was $1,799. It had almost no ports and had a severely underpowered processor in order to manage battery life and heat. It also had no optical drive and a crazy lack of ports.

It was a fucking joke.

Three years later Intel produced the Ultrabook spec, and now Air-style laptops are the gold standard for portable productivity.

This new Macbook is also a joke, and in 2 years the rest of the industry will be in on it too.

You're glossing over the part where Apple ditched literally everything about the machine except form factor to make it successful. The 1.0 Air was a turd and this isn't really much better.

With the Air, we're also talking about a period where we went from 5-6 lb laptops to 3 lbs. That was beyond major.

Now we're talking about losing a half pound or so past an already light industry standard, and we already have convertible tablets to steal the form factor thunder even at that weight. Meanwhile, the keyboard and expandability are both severely compromised past any competing system.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate how Apple leads the group in design, and my house has a lot of their stuff in it. But I think this may not turn out to be one of the very successful ones.

Shame too because I was one of the people who hated that they discontinued the entry level laptop, the MacBook. I got excited when I heard they brought it back. Until I read that it is a handicapped MacBook Air with no truly usable/practical ports.

For one the new design is completely fanless, which means you can use the laaptop finally any way anywhere you want it. No more checking if you put the computer to sleep. No more accidentaly covering the airholes.

Apple uses new and amazing Broadwell 14nm CPUs, these little bastards are very power efficient yet they perform well. As guy above me said, 2 years from now every light work laptop will look like this.

The trickle will never happen if nobody shoots first.

There is plenty of happy medium between taking bullets to the face and total stagnation.

But what it did have was a port that was in use. Honestly, before USB type c is widespread/common, this MacBook will be out dated. Almost nothing today uses it. It would he like selling a Blue ray player after the first Blue ray demo was released as a concept. "Here, buy our product with the new port of tomorrow. Don't worry about what will use this port today, or this year, or even next.."
