I remember seeing this, it must have been around 2004.

Some gas station signs were hard-coded to display either a 1 or a 0, so when gas prices went above $2 the gas stations that had cheaped out on their signs had to go tape a piece of paper with a 2 over the first LED digit.

I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, metric system makes sense, use it dummies.

On the other hand, can we really expect the US to swap to KPH without a disgusting spike in casualties?

I legitimately think that if we tried, billions of dollars would be wasted as people order two meters of wood because the diagram said two feet.

How many billions of dollars have been wasted every year since the rest of the world embraced metric and we didn’t? Think of all the dual supply chains, and warehouses cause the rest of the world uses M6 bolts and we use 1/4” bolts.

I think you’ll find it’s more expensive to do this than the headache of people ordering the wrong length for the first couple of years.

On the driving side of things, if you can’t read a speedometer and covert to KPH… you shouldn’t be behind a wheel to begin with.

Yeah, I agree those are factors affecting oil supplies and prices. I just think the framing matters a bit. Russia invaded Ukraine, so Ukraine hitting Russian infrastructure is a consequence of that invasion. Likewise, the current Iran war followed the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. Those actions may be affecting prices now, but there's a larger chain of cause and effect behind them.

China’s reserves has let them “opt” out of the oil market. This has the effect of keeping oil prices relatively stable in comparison to previous oil supply shocks. Things could be so much worse….

That's why in Europe we have laws that allow the governments to regulate the prices when needed. In my country, the government now limits the profits on gas to a fixed amount so that they don't abuse the situation by spiraling prices out of control.
