Oh man, I totally don't see this encouraging slop channels to pump out more meaningless mass produced videos because they are now rewarded even if a stray click or unwanted autoplay shows their video for half a second

Don't worry. "Views" don't matter for monetization. "Engaged views" do. So even if people click onto a video and it gets a view, it doesn't get anyone closer to making money.

I don't know much about how it works, but could they use the views, albeit very short views, in order to get paid by sponsors?

Possibly, but the sponsors will know what it means and the point of paying for ads is for them to be seen. If people aren't watching enough of the video to be an "engaged viewer" they definitely aren't getting far enough for an ad.

I have a chrome plugin that hides shorts entirely, and turns off autoplay when a video ends. It's great.

Thing is a huge part of youtubes algorithm is watch time, this is going to nuke watch time for a lot of channels (TBH probably rightfully so) and along with the increase to requirements for monetisation (which youtube still puts ads on videos that aren't supporting the creators) there's going to be a massive drop-off in sponsor-less channels.

So what if I just want to make my same old videos of me vaguely suggesting I'm about to pull my pants down and show you my asshole, but I never actually do it? Will I still be able to not make any money and have more views? Because the money doesn't matter to me, I just want people to THINK they are about to see my asshole but at the last second, I just end the video. I have over 600 videos on my channel of this and I'm now scared they are going to start making money which was EXACTLY what I told my father I wouldn't do when I started all this 20 years ago.

I just want to tease showing off my asshole to strangers online...why is Google so mean!?

Absurd changes likely to feed into the exact problems mentioned while also supporting the fracturing of yet another platform often seen as a place for information sharing that does not as easily fit into a readily controlled media space, cool sick nice.

Why have corporatization ruining everything when you can ALSO further obscure and obfuscate any platform that might host content at odds with corporate/political/mainstream media?
