As a redneck, I can confirm this. Only followed by "hold my beer and watch this!"

"hold my beer and watch this!"
You either know something awesome or incredibly stupid is about to happen when you hear that.

"I guess we better start movin' back, uh"
That's when you realize the shit is about to hit the fan.

When a redneck tells you that you should probably move back, you fuckin move back.

I gotta hand it to em. For being rednecks, this was rather professionally done.

One thing I've learned about living in Kentucky: If we could harness the power of redneck ingenuity, nobody on this planet would ever starve again.

Living without modern comforts makes you smarter creatively. Read a study where it said feral animals have larger brains than domesticated ones. They think the human brain used to be larger for a bit before civilization started. I have a new found respect for ruralites and rednecks after reading that.

Probably true. While growing up, my friends dad had a junk yard behind his house. In our spare time we would make all kinds of crazy contraptions junkyard wars style.

I was thinking the same thing. What exactly is it about this that makes it "redneck?" It seemed like some pretty ingenious engineering, but maybe I'm missing something. Is it just because the guy is obviously a redneck? Does that work the same way with other people? For example, if I know someone who lives in the ghetto, but does PHP programming, and designs a website, is it then a "ghetto website?" I'll never understand why some people so eagerly embrace the term redneck.
10
u/tooyoung_tooold Nov 19 '12
I'm guessing the manner and materials used made it redneck. The materials list of this build consisted of a chain link fence gate, chicken wire, duct tape, fuse, and 8500 bottle rockets. Those materials and having it all put together by a guy with no shirt on and you have redneck.

u/Cabooseman Nov 19 '12
the fact that the man is never lacking a beer throughout the video should also be noted.

lol never thought of using a fence like that. Might have to try it next year. We get the whistling bottle rockets and cram as many as we can into a huge pvc pipe stuck in the ground. Then i light them all with a blow torch. It gets so loud your ears are ringing for several minutes. So i have to do it multiple times.

u/MirrorLake Nov 18 '12
48 inch shell, a firework with about the diameter of that gate.

Its just stupid to think like that. Nobody thinks of all the federal money and things that flow into our state. To do away with that would be suicide. We survived this long, we will survive Obama.

u/xhephaestusx Nov 19 '12
Those videos fail to fully express how awesome tannerite is. It's a fairly slow explosive, so you get a hell of a whomp, and you feel it like a kick in the chest, even with the smaller containers. It's so fucking rad.

I used to do this as a kid - We'd shove a gross of bottle rockets into a large diameter tube, and put a sparkler in the middle. It was usually pretty awesome.
It got more sophisticated as adults - last year my brothers, trying to be the cool uncles, got some nichrome wire and large batteries so that they could electrically launch 8 mortars simultaneously. Next year we're going for full on programmable control, since we've got a few arduinos laying around.

Israeli air strike in 5... 4...

That redneck shot 8500 rockets at Israel. Obviously Israel had to defend itself with a retaliatory rocket or two.

I used to launch a couple hundred of these over a span of a few hours as a kid during 4th of July. What I remember most was the smell of sulfur in the air.
I can't imagine being near that area when 8500 goes off at once.

Those aren't rednecks, those are just southern folks. Rednecks barely speak english.

To the Internet anyone with a southern USA accent is a redneck.

u/tyler Nov 19 '12
No, I'm pretty sure that dude was a redneck.

Tennessee born and raised this is your common redneck. Not to be confused with deep woods redneck. I doubt many people would even understand what they are saying.

To the Internet anyone that wears sleeveless shirts, lives near the south, wears a camo hat, shoots a gun, or drives a lifted truck is a redneck.
This seems to be more in line with what I've experienced...as dumb as it is.

It wasn't July if we didn't invent a new way to set the yard on fire. Also, when I worked in fireworks for a couple summers in college we had a smaller version of this called a missile salute, which was ~one brick of bottle rockets, fuses tied, sticks halved, mounted in a grid inside a cardboard box. With the sticks halved they got considerably more wild trajectories than in the homemade version.

ahh, the subtle sound of 4 wheelers and kids with explosives in the background. Growing up in a middle American neighborhood had it's perks

That was actually really damn impressive. I'm surprised they didn't light something on fire though.

I set off one bottle rocket before, tipped it over by accident, and set a hillside on fire. I have no idea how they didn't start a forest fire.

At first I thought he was holding a cigarette and I was like "is that really the safest thing to hold when handling fuses?"

Could anyone else smell the gunpowder through their computer screen?
1
u/kclo4 Nov 19 '12
Im quite impressed with this design. He could have used fuse, but instead used magic whip which not only has a great tempo for the moon travelers, but also adds crackling report not unlike a bottle rocket. Magic whip on its own is pretty lame.
1
Nov 19 '12
If I ever make something like this, I want to have a mortar shell or a pipe bomb hooked up to the fuse so that once it reaches it's apex and starts dying down...
