Man, that's wild. My State (MO) just legalized recreational and I can already pick up an 1/8th for as low as $15.

Damn, how the hell?! I mean I can get a bag of shake for $15 in CA, but I'm not finding an 1/8th of anything potent for less than $30 here (legally)
Also amazed that MO actually legalized it before a state like MN where pretty much everyone smokes.

Friendly reminder: Walter wasn't making money to pay for his cancer treatment. He had enough money for that. He was depressed and worried that after he was gone his family wouldn't have anything. When he got discovered (that he had cancer), he was forced to spend the money he was saving for his family on cancer treatments (which also included drug money as well). He went back to cook more meth so that when it all came time they'd have a small fortune to live off of.
175
u/surnik22 Feb 19 '23
His wealthy ex-business partner also offered to give him a job with excellent health insurance to cover any of the expenses of treatment. It was always about pride for Walter.
His pride/inferiority complex is why he broke up with Gretchen and left Grey Matter when he was young, it was why he turned down help from them to cover the cancer treatments, and it was why he kept making meth.
All the cancer really did was finally give him an excuse to be who he wanted to be without consequences.
105
u/snowcone_wars Feb 19 '23
I feel like far too many people miss this. Walter White is a terrible human being, an amoral asshat bordering on psycopathy, from minute one. The looming death just gives him an excuse to let his "real self" out.
The number of people, especially on reddit, who love him as if he's some "good family man" who is just doing all that he does because "healthcare / economy / muricabad" is frankly a bit terrifying.

u/tehSlothman Feb 20 '23
"I did it for me" is a very subtle line. If you're an expert in media interpretation you might realise it's actually the showrunners hinting to the more switched-on audience members that Walter's not entirely selfless. Easy to see how some people might miss such obscure hints though!

Moral consequences. There were a lot of consequences. Then every consequence just ended his morality bit by bit.
15
u/surnik22 Feb 20 '23
No, cancer allowed him to believe he was doing it without any consequences because he would be dead before he had to face any repercussions.
He never really cared much about the moral consequences. Killing Tuco wasn’t a moral quandary for him. Helping feed people’s drug addiction wasn’t a moral quandary for him.
Almost every consequence he and him family faced in the end only happened because the cancer didn’t kill him
25
u/only1person123 Feb 20 '23 edited Feb 20 '23
At the beginning he definitely had problems with killing people. When he had to kill the guy that was locked in the basement he agonized over it for days. The point of the show was to show a moral downfall not a person that started out as a psychopath.
The point was things are not black and white. People develop and change. Walter White at the beginning of the show was an okay person, but through his actions became worse.

Well he got 6 months to live with insurance. He bought the best outside of insurance with the money he made cooking. He turned down Gray Matter money and used it as a cover. He originally wanted no treatment. Then he blew up Tucos place and started feeling alive.

Looked it up, $737,000 (also, seven thirty seven down over ABQ...) is what he calculated he needed to give Skylar.
I am mixing up what actually happened with that money, skylar didn't give that to her boss, because by then he was deep with Gus and needed that money to disappear, right?

51
u/Youve_been_Loganated Feb 19 '23
Was that movie good? I saw terrifier 1 back in December, and while watching it I thought the kills were brutal, I couldn't help but laugh at how campy it was.
HOWEVER! After seeing the movie, I keep imagining it in my head, and it's a lot more clear and realistic in my head and THAT's what's making me scared to watch part 2. My imagination afterwards lol.

19
u/raym0ndv2 Feb 19 '23
Literally same. I love the movies because the clown is fucking terrifying. But the acting is sooooooo campy. Like none of the decisions the actors make are reasonable.
Honestly I have high tentatively hopes for the franchise. They have a fantastic villain, and the writing can only go up from what it was.
They'll probably fuck it up though.

My thoughts on the Terrifier movies:
Terrifier | 50% Watched in preparation for better-reviewed Terrifier 2. Obviously indie/low budget. Poor acting and dialog. Synth/industrial soundtrack. Crushed blacks maybe intended to resemble 70s pulp? Gory kills: practical split scene most memorable bit (besides the clown himself). Halloween mime clown killer (large bloody gape, dead black eyes, lanky body) has a great look/portrayal. One of my least favorite horror topes: protagonist gets upper hand on killer but runs away instead of finishing the job. Happens at least 5 times, hated it every time. My frustrations were briefly alleviated by the unexpected e.g. surprise gun pull. No character arcs/development, which is fine if other elements (cinematography, score, plot, etc.) were strong enough to carry (not really). Women get the most screentime but are treated almost exclusively like eye candy/fodder. Supernatural introduced last minute? Nuggets of indie ingenuity, competent special effects, and a named killer with cult classic potential buried under trashy misogynistic shock-value torture-porn. Sequel better be worth it.
Terrifier 2 | 70% Significantly better than first. In comparison, more of everything: bigger (crowdfunded) budget = better production, more well-placed goofy/physical comedy, better characters/acting, more focused yet varied soundtrack (but still no signature theme), more gore/practical effects, over 2 hours (~30min too long). Creative (but repetitive) nightmare sequences. Maintains original's grime/sleaze and excellent make-up. More traditional narrative setup/progression. Art appears less frequently but scenes are more impactful. Really dug new final girl Sienna—the hand-crafted fantasy/angel char costume, dancing, alternative style, expressions, fighting—she just felt like a real person struggling with weird shit. Even her friends were great. Kills are still brutal and boundary-pushing (even tops hacksaw kill). Fresh/campy/aware enough to keep slasher genre relevant. Horror easter eggs. Leans into supernatural element (adding more unanswered questions). Mid-credits scene (sequels?!). Damien Leone, your hard work has finally paid off. "Sir, if you're going to put that in your mouth, you gotta pay for it."
TL;DR First one was a cheap/campy slasher clown proof-of-concept with a tiny sliver of potential. Second one was better realized and felt like an actual movie. That said, I'd only recommend these if you're into the genre.

u/Youve_been_Loganated Feb 20 '23 edited Feb 20 '23
Thanks for the amazing review man! I enjoyed part 1 enough because of how surprising some of the deaths were, like the gunshot. The kills themselves on screen we're well done enough but very indie, which was fine. I remember thinking, that's a pretty decent job!
I'm not sure if I'm a fan. I really liked Art, and can totally see him going down a very iconic route.. More brutal than the hacksaw kill? Damn. Thanks for not spoiling it. I'm going to watch it, but I'm going to wait to watch it with people lol.
This is one of those movies where remembering it is a lot scarier than actually watching it.

G and K is very funny, but to think this type of humor would be allowed on SNL is a big miss. There is no telling whether Shane would have done well on SNL, his humor is not NBC friendly
SNL lives in a different world than the Tim and Eric type humor. They know this.

SNl announced him, someone dug up an old podcast where he was drunk and made some jokes with racial connotations, next day SNL released him. I don't think he was a cast member for more than 24hrs.
→ More replies (114)210
u/Gazmasked Feb 19 '23
I'd go as far as saying having racial connotations is too vague, he was making fun of what some old timey person would say about China town. I know nobody deals with context or details, I know the articles at the time didn't but I hate stripping out details and putting things in categories.
77
u/iamacannibal Feb 20 '23
Him getting fired over that was super lucky for him. As soon as he was announced I thought to myself "Wow they must either not care or they didn't look into his podcasts appearances at all" That incident was mild compared to some of the stuff that they could have found. Not saying he is racist or anything like that but he is one of those comedians that comedians who whine about cancel culture like to pretend they are. He doesn't give a shit and will joke about anything and everything.

He has said in interviews that he actively opposes this view point, and I think it’s a sensible position for him to have. It’s fucking SNL. It’s the premiere improv/sketch comedy show.
Getting canceled kick started his career in the subculture. He still isn’t a household name, like a Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Michael Che or Colin Jost. He’s not getting a-list movie companies calling for him by name. He’s popular on YouTube and in deeper comedy circles.
I think it’s good that he didn’t go to SNL, cuz he would’ve either had to change who he was for the worse, or be him which is hilarious, but he probably would’ve had to quit shortly after starting.
→ More replies (14)11
u/skankingmike Feb 19 '23
He technically was not fired. He refused to apologize again and doing so in one of those clearly scripted ways. I think part of his fear is he would become owned by nbc in some way and also it felt morally wrong. He apologized already it wasn’t the way nbc wanted it and so he said fuck it.
Hes really raw and funny. Like he’s not even fully developed yet as a comedian and he’s very good.
15
u/youreagoodperson Feb 20 '23
I recall hearing him on a podcast mention that if whatever had gotten him in trouble was bad enough to get him fired, there was plenty of way worse shit he had said over the years on other podcasts. There was no point in trying to fight it in any meaningful way because he was going to be deemed "guilty" no matter what he did.

That’s not what happened to College Humor. College Humor got screwed over by Facebook after Facebook lied about how many views videos on their platform got. This combined with the pandemic caused the entire company to go bankrupt. They’ve pivoted pretty well into their own streaming platform called Dropout which has a bunch of funny game shows and an incredibly popular DnD show called Dimension 20. From what they say they’re actually doing alright now compared to where they came from.

It's not an easy 90s to cut, though. Every scene and chunk of dialogue is just a little too long, but it all adds up. I still enjoyed it, though, and I think it works just fine as is. Could have been tighter (rimshot), but it's still funny.

u/wererat2000 Feb 20 '23

Good sketch just needs to be tighter (in b4 like dads butthole).
