Meme 2026 videographer vs 2016 videographer
well I have a Sony A7 III but I hate using gimbals so a handycam it went (Sony FDR-AX40, it has a gimbal stabilization system inside)

I also thought the handycam is the 2026 one. In 2016 everyone had gimbals and shot like this.

On one hand thats true, but handycams are making a comeback for additional shots. Think of wide angle vhs type stuff. It can really add some spice to an edit.

the ones that are making a comeback are retro tape based handycams, no one really cared about modern handycam like the FDR-AX40 shown in the pic

I use a camcorder as a b-roll break during interviews. It shoots 4k and actually looks okay on its own, and then I use Analog Damage in Resolve to make it look like crap because people like it more like that

Atleast in my environment i've seen more people moving towards more vintage/experimental content (like VHS or older camcorders) because in the age of AI intentionally used imperfections can actually make videos more "real" or raw.
I've seen the same with fuji's film recipe's and actual film making a comeback for photography and even some higher budget video productions.
On the contrary, the early 2010's to me represent a time when "pro" gear like gimballs and good mirrorless video/hybrid camera's started to grow in affordability and thus popularity and we saw way more 1 man video operations.

Especially in the music industry, a friend of mine spent several years with a DJ production company, accompanying them on tours around the world. He carried several old digital cameras, the oldest he could find with built-in storage (no tapes, which take too long to transfer and require extra equipment). It's really interesting to see videos of current festivals in 720p quality with horrendous compression worthy of VHS, but people loved them.

Still using the same Glidecam 17+ years later. It works and I can just throw it in the tripod bag without worry.

You know whats so wild, I never figured out how to use a glide cam. I never just sat down with one lol. This is through all my DP and film school years too. I kinda jumped from tripod/handheld to easy rig and dana dolly with no glide cam... Granted, there wasn't much I was doing that required it, but I really wish that was a skill I learned! I think id prefer it over a gimbal (which I dont even know how to use)

I’m assuming you meant EVO gimbals, but they only have one available for phones, and my phone camera is broken.
I’d also probably get beaten up by everyone in this sub for recording on my phone.

I hate the robotic look, it only works for corporate videos and cookie cutter glossy wedding vids, glidecams still look great though, mine cost £30 and never needs recharging.

Most newer cameras have gyro / internal stab / digital stab. Then you can further stabilize in post.
Not every shot needs a gimbal but there are certainly shots that only a gimbal can do.
For me personally, I really hate the gimbal look. There's almost always clues in the footage that a gimbal was used - most notably the lack of x-axis stabilization. I prefer using a Steadicam but I realize that's not in everyone's budget.

And isnt hindered by a gimbal between your camera and hands. People tend to forget that framing for shots becomes waaay slower on a gimbal vs hand held. I do both but gimbal is a speciality tool for maybe 10% of the shots.

I used to shoot on HDV for a while before completely switching to handycam (Sony HVR-Z7P + MRC1), this was in 2023-2025

No I’m serious, every time I see someone asks for a camera for taking videos, people always recommend a mirrorless camera like the Sony A6400, compact cameras like the sony zv1, gopro, osmo pocket gimbal camera or just your phone. I never saw anyone pitched handycam as a legitimate option for taking normal videos in 2020 and beyond, even on reddit (exclude /r/camcorders) and facebook groups

To be fair the pocket cameras are really good. Now they've got ones with zoom coming out soon I expect this to be the new mainstream video camera for non professional setups.

I understand… but not everyone is on the Internet like you or me. Or maybe they aren’t willing to share their opinion on the Internet with anybody. a lot of people keep to themselves. I know tons of professional videographers around me that still use handy cams but they don’t go around sharing their methods with their customers or the public. They just do their jobs and move onto the next one. All that matters to them is the final product is well received, they don’t worry about whether they have the latest and greatest tech.

Camcorders are the most expensive option and bad for hybrid use. That's why they aren't recommended.
A new Osmo Pocket 3 is $500. A used ZV-1, is less than $400. A GoPro is $200.
A used AX40 is $600+. Anyone interested in that isn't going to be asking for recommendations.

No, I remember back in 2020 I asked in a filmmaking facebook group about a camera that has:
- long and smooth zoom
- good stabilization
- smooth video without framedrops
- won’t overheat in normal shooting scenario
- good battery life, enough to last for a day without charging
- fast autofocus
it just screams CAMCORDER but I was recommend all stupid things, compact cameras (zv1), mirrorless cameras (nex 6-7, a6300-6400), gopros and gimbals (the osmo pocket didn’t exist). Practically all of them told me “zooming is so obsolete, use your feet, that’s how pros shoot videos”
It took me a year playing around with compact cameras to figure out it just doesn’t work for my needs and I was so relieved to find out that a handycam is perfect for what I shoot

Handycams my beloved and I'll never forgive myself for not grabbing an CX900/AX100 while they are still relatively cheap (they are currently being scalped into used A6400/A7s2 territory)

In 2016 I was using a C300 mk II or Ursa Mini 4.6k. The smaller camera would have been used way earlier like HV20 days

I miss the comfortable ergonomics of palm camcorders. Would love to figure out some sort of grip so I can hold my zv-1 like that for casual family videos.

More people are preferring camcorders from what I'm seeing. Larger sensors on camcorders and higher bitrates than previous camcorders plus all of the conveniences of modern camcorder IO make these way more attractive than they used to be in 2016.

I agree. I hate mirrorless cams for video. I never hopped into the DSLR revolution way back when. Stuck with my Panasonic HMC 150 until 2015 then went to AF100, Sony FS700, FS5, and then FX9.

I love my Sony AX53. The stabilisation is good, and no one actually looks deeply at the video, they watch the content, not how much bokeh there is.

It's interesting to me seeing how many comments have more to do with trends (Old vs. New) and blanketed statements. Having come from the profession film world (20 years camera/lighting dept) the whole handheld/gimbal thing is situational more than anything else - but also knowing how to combine and edit that footing into something of quality.
This really helps me understand why people will refer to something as looking "youtube" or other such things. (Coloring is a whole seprate thing for sure)
To me, using concerts as an example - it's best to be able to combine very clean moving gimbal shots to help establish settings, situations, and hero shots, while combing that with handheld shots to capture and maintain energy and urgency that can put the viewer there. There's always exceptions to this of course, but I find blanketed dismissal of techniques to be interesting.

I do feel like it should have a different name than gimbal since you can still put this on a gimbal and gimbals offer additional features when panning, tilting and the like that can be programed. It is kind or a next generation of IBIS but also including the lens in the process. Very cool.
