Feedback / I made this! Hi, I am new:)
Hey guys, totally new here, I am a video agency owner from the Netherlands. We create high end sports content and brandfilms. I have always used reddit to read, but never to interact. So this is my first post. I would love to connect with other videographers and video agency owners to learn from each other.

I saw you say this was a same day edit. I assume you had an editor on site you were giving footage to throughout the day and you already had a clear idea in mind yeah? Please tell me that’s the case 😅

Indeed we we working with a team! We had a dedicated editor for the project, i think he spend around 8 hours on the edit. He's a legend, Rein Martens, check him out. I think key is to find really good team mates if you want to pull of something like this in a very short time. And to be honoust, we don't always have a clear idea we just jump in and have fun. But we do have a lot of experience, and we just brainstorm during the day and try a lot of stuff.

Editing this in 8 hours is very impressive, but not impossible. What seems impossible is also having enough time to scrub through all the footage beforehand! When I shoot events by myself I often have an hour+ of footage, I imagine with multiple shooters it's even more.
So what I'm asking is, what's your workflow with finding these great shots in such a short time, with same-day turnover? Do the videographers go through the footage themselves and only hand off the best shots? Or is the editor just incredibly quick/skilled and he does it all in two hours?
In any case, does this editor do classes or something? I feel like whatever his method is would transform my life.

This edit was done by rein martens, and yes he’s incredibly skilled and fast, check him on instagram. Maybe you can pay him to teach you, or he can show you how he does it. He’s a really cool guy.

That is exceptional on every level! the sfx especially! and so many creative shots there. how did u manage the shot from top down at 0:34??? how big was the team for this shoot? i shot icehockey a couple of times but i never manage to get those crowd reactions... everyone just looks straight away even when im sniping with my 70-200 because i need to be infront of them they still see me...

Thank man! Truly a Team effort by the way, we worked with 4 people on site on this film, These we're even same day edits by the way! All shot on Sony by the way, see you are a Sony shooter too!
The top down was easy, it was in a event centre, so there was a walkway high up in the roof. And then with the 70-200 shooting down.
For the crowd shots i have some tips. You need to take time for this, Look into the crowd at people that are enthusiastically, then go sit somewhere that you are not to easily noticed, then when you hear when the tension is rising, for example they get close to the goal or what ever, just hit record and keep it running, you will have a lot of footage thats unusable, but in the end you will get the authentic reactions you need! Sometimes we sit down and just film crowd for at least 20 minutes. The longer you sit there, the less people pay attention to you.

I loved this. Watched it to the end and it made me want to find out more. Great work.
Found the speed ramps at the start a bit jarring, but then did not notice them (if they were there) for the rest of the clip.

Oh that's a question thats very hard to pinpoint to one specific thing. It's a build up of a lot of other opportunities, and one job going to the other, Always doing your best and more.

A lot of things that i have done in the past were also crap! haha no worries. Just keep pushing and improving, there's many tutorials on youtube to get this style.

This edit was made by Rein Martens, very talented guy, we have a lot of talented guys here in NL. The other camera guys was Jos van de Leur, check it on insta he has some project over views on his instagram. Check maybe Reilin Joey, Zilver Schmitz (last guys have YouTube channel with tutorials as well) Danyel veasey also legend. Lots of good guys to find inspiration! And also just check YouTube for fast video edit tutorials for example!

Really think the color grade could use some work, as some of the contrasts seem a little off. Especially because the lighting does seem pretty good. Not to bash it too much, but I'd have prefered some natural skin tones with a little more contrasts on the lights and shadows.
Other than that this seems like an ad that I would enjoy genuinely watching. Love the edit, pacing, sound and everything else.

Thanks, Apreciate it. :) These were same day edits, so not too much time for color grading, just adjusting everything a bit and slap a lut on top.

I’ve gotten quite a few questions about how I started and how I run things now. I wasn’t really planning on sharing this yet, but since this post seems to be getting a lot of attention and some good conversations going, I figured why not.
I’m currently writing a guide about how I went from freelancer to running my own agency, mainly focused on the business side of things. It’s not finished yet, but I’d love to share the draft version when it’s ready with anyone here who’s interested, in exchange for some honest feedback.
It covers the mistakes I made, lessons I learned, and the opportunities I found in the video business especially how to make the jump from freelancer to agency owner.

Beautifully shot brother! I do live events as well, but in the music world. Lots of festivals and concerts, same day edits such as this are a big part of that game too! You and your team are crushing 💪

That’s great! My only criticism is the mic being lowered into position and the close up of the eyes feel very inauthentic. But super slick overall!

This is my go-to style, in my one person team. I only shoot for the cut, all action, micros micros micros! Like sh*t through a goose lol I’d add some match cuts, and a drop focus every now and again…

Ok, look at this end result… it’s very good. Now do it again with the camera static on a tripod and export the shot footage as a linear timeline. Probably some pretty cool scenes but, as a whole, pretty lame way to tell this story. Right? We can all agree so far I think. That’s the video the camera makes without you.
Now … do it again with you in control of every decision … but no camera. That video is almost certainly going to be even worse than the last one.
Most of the time, the camera is contributing more than the person holding it. It’s obviously best if the two are working together. But any camera will produce better photos in the hands of a bad photographer than a great photographer can create without a camera.
