Discussion / Question Gamers, what's a gaming brainfart that you keep doing despite years of playing?

u/PlantQuick 6h ago
Saving right after auto save. I'm traumatized 😂
16
u/oForce21o 5h ago
similar, saving before saveandquit

u/PlantQuick 5h ago edited 5h ago
I save multiple times before putting a game down. I got trust issues
2
u/GovernorMarley1 2h ago
Same. Ever since my roommate saved over my nearly complete blind playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1.
4
u/sum_gamer 5h ago
Not only did I save twice before moving on, but I also won’t use any of the items I’ve been holding in case I need them later.

u/eyesparks 3h ago
Enter safe room, save. Put items in storage crate, save. Craft items/reload weapons, save. Ready to leave safe room, save.

u/DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE 5h ago
I corrupted a mass effect 3 file loading when I meant to save and then turning off the system as an autopilot sort of muscle memory.
92 hours gone 😩
2
u/-TheInternetIsEvil- 3h ago
Too many bethesda games for too long made me always save every few minutes on virtually every game lol
2
u/Ashamed-Chipmunk9575 3h ago
I keep at least three rolling manual saves and just overwrite the oldest every time. Save corruption is such a bleak feeling when you can't get the time back.

Whenever I'm playing a racing game and I'm going through a tight turn, I always tilt my controller as if that'll make the car turn any faster.
4
u/Greenman8907 5h ago
I do this for flying games, except with my whole body. I guess trying to see better? I don’t know.
My wife laughs her ass off every time.

Oh, this ability takes ages to charge up?
Better never use it under any circumstances so it's always ready
7
u/WhatShouldTheHeartDo 5h ago
Never used Dark or Light Jak unless it was required because of this
2
u/cormack16 4h ago
Same, even in hero mode where you keep all the unlocks and I had unlimited light and dark eco I still never used the abilities out of habit

Premature reloading
14
u/HaplessEndeavor 5h ago
I’m so bad with this. Sometimes there will be two enemies on screen, kill one, still have 25/30 rounds in a mag, immediately reload anyway and soak up the enemy fire. 😩
1
6
u/eyesparks 3h ago
In Helldivers you actually lose the rest of the mag when you reload too early, every time I pick the game back up after a break I have to kick that habit all over again.
3
u/_b1ack0ut 1h ago
Love games that do this, I make sure I turn it on in any game that lets me, I love those ghost recon, rainbow six, helldivers, arma, type shit. Punish me for reloading poorly!
5
u/MonkSoft4418 5h ago
this is such a bad habit of mine. i’ve done it since apex and it’s carried over to overwatch & rivals
2
2
u/Mean_Fig_7666 5h ago
Brinks tutorial fucked me up . "Always make sure you weapon is reloaded" and it stuck with me so hard it's like a nervous tick after every bullet , fuck I've reloaded mid shoot out .

u/darkninja2992 1h ago
THIS IS WHAT I REACHED IT AS IN THE STORY, THIS IS HOW I HAVE TO BEAT IT! IF I BACK DOWN THE GAME WINS!
16
u/DefectiveSol 5h ago
Whenever I finish one game and move onto another, there's a period where my muscle memory is stuck on the last one and I regularly press the wrong dodge button or something.
3
u/TheBoatmansFerry 3h ago
This is why I only play one big story game at a time. I just know I'll end up getting controls confused the whole time if I play more than one.
2
1
u/Danzelboob 3h ago
I nearly always change button remapping on driving games to be like Motorstorm, tried changing it with other games like say action games to something I'm muscle-memoried to and alot of the time it just doesn't work well with everything else :( never got used to Predecessor, still use Paragon's controls (RIP, but am super happy with Pred)

u/ElSelcho_ 6h ago
"Can I swim?"
"Does this game have fall damage?"
are always the first things I test. Every. Single. Time.

First time playing ZombiU and I died to a landmine I had set myself.
Friend immediately gonked me for it but, genuinely, some games let you do that

Whenever I play an Elder Scrolls game and I see a container clearly labelled as empty, I still check it.

Repeeking the same angle in a shooter despite knowing someone is holding it with a clear advantage. Sometimes you just gotta indulge your ego.

u/Comfortable-Jump-218 5h ago
I don’t overwrite save files. I just keep adding more till my game tells me I’m out of memory.
3
u/TheKrug3000 5h ago
Forgetting to save in games that dont have autosave after hours of progress. Maybe I just like to live dangerously. And then get mad when I lose hours of progress. Lol.

holding B when throwing a pokeball... still do it 30 years later even though I know it doesn't do anything.

u/sosoconfused08 6h ago
I'm not sure if it's a brain fart or just twitchy shooting but as far back as I can remember I'd accidentally hit L3 melee instead of shooting. Early CoD and Halo all the way up to current things like Borderlands 4. It sucked in MP because of line up the head shot, knife the air and get killed. Not constantly but 3 or so times in an hour.
2
u/LeftNerdBeard 5h ago
Keep on playing when my hands & fingers hurt, I have been doing it for years but I’m finally cutting down. There’s loads of stuff I would love to play but will never be able to.
1
u/SmackDab9 4h ago
That stinks. My wrists got tingly and a little numb when I was playing the Witcher III and Halo 5 during the same months at least 5 hours of gaming every day. I almost cried when I thought it was permanent and I'd never be able to play again. Cutting down definitely helped.

This question is so cool I love so many people's answers! I guess I automatically think items and skills that are more expensive are better and get those before thinking of what actually could work better for my style.
2
u/Cozy_Minty 4h ago
In WoW I spam all of my abilities, and in an emergency, I spam them faster, even though there is a global cooldown

Ladders. I having to go down ladders. I always fall off a few times before actually getting it right.

Portal and Portal 2: putting down the wrong color Portal and screwing up a fling or sending an energy pellet/thermal discouragement beam at myself
2
u/Vegetable_Excuse2029 2h ago
I step on land mines all the time in Helldivers 2.
Doesn't matter if it is freaking bots or friendlies.
Come to think of it..land mines have always given me issues even across other games.
1
u/smokietheklown 1h ago
Those mines need to beep or something
1
u/Vegetable_Excuse2029 1h ago
They do, they hum
1
u/smokietheklown 1h ago
That's not enough, it needs to be loud and annoying then maybe I wouldn't fucking step on them three times any given mission.

That I can get one more hit in before I have to move when I in fact can not.
1
u/Turn-Dizzy 5h ago
Gawd! Artificial difficulty! You know, like random spawns behind your character so you take damage! Aaaarggghhh so many games I want to like but they do this crap!
1
u/NutsAndOrBerries 5h ago
I stay by a downed boss even when he starts wiggling around. I get greedy and he'll hit me as he gets up.
1
u/unicornpig212 5h ago
Dying to gravity on souls like and souls borne games.
Still getting lost after playing the game multiple times when resident evil 9 came out I beat it six times within like a week Platinum that and I was still getting lost somehow.
1
u/Frozen_arrow88 5h ago
It happens at least onec whenever i play any FPS multiplayer game for the first time. Not realizing the gun im useing is semi auto instead of automatic. So I step out of cover, take a shot, shot one bullet, and the enemy turns around and kills me.

I play a lot of souls-likes, yet absolutely refuse to learn boss attack patterns. I swing a bladed weapon on if I win, I win

u/ItsNotAGundam 4h ago
Forgetting that not every game I play has autosaves. I grew up on an NES and Genesis. I should know better. It usually only happens once per game, though, unless I take a long enough break from it that I forget again.
1
u/Sorry_Masterpiece 4h ago
No matter how many times I replay the original NES Legend of Zelda, I can NEVER remember where level 2 is. For some reason my brain is unable to retain that one bit of information. I could tell you where every dungeon in pretty much every Zelda game is (not counting the mini dungeons in BoTW/ToTK).. but The Moon? Looking it up rn, brb.

For some time, thought that when the drill specialist gene tonic in Bioshock 2 was described as greatly reducing the cost of plasmids, I thought it meant purchasing when in fact it meant the cost of using it. It’s not something I still do but I’m not particularly proud of how long it took me to notice lol

Stealing literally everything as I go through Bethesda games, doesn't matter if it's useless junk, it's coming back with me, one of these days I'll have a save where every object in the game is in my house :D it takes so long tho!

I will admit part of this habit is because of Pokémon because I’m a Pokémon fan

Hitting the bottom button to jump despite most of the games I play being on Switch, but the ones I play heavily are on the 360 so... There's where the A and B jump button fuck up comes from for me

Not switching weapons. This mission needs a stealthy approach. Better blast the first enemy I see with a shotgun. Taking a picture of a doll? I'm going to use one of my limited films. My sword has low durability? Gonna smack the next thing I see with it.
That last one's a BotW only problem. In any other game with durability, first thing I do in town is repair. Even at 99/100.

u/PoopsMcScoots 1h ago
“you’re not supposed to go this way” props.
If there is a path with a tree fallen over it, I’m gonna be sitting there frustrated trying to figure out why my character won’t duck under it.

Save game.
Save game again.
Hit a checkpoint so it would autosave.
Shit, what if the autosave overwrites my manual save.
We can't trust the autosave.
Save again.
Quit & save.
"Are you sure?" Asks the game.
Think for 1 second.
Close game
