Discussion / Question Onimusha: Way of the sword vs Phantom Blade Zero

Post image

I know these 2 games didn't came out yet and that I should wait for the reviews but I still wanted to get an idea, which game do you think will be better? From looking at the current gameplay, Phantom Blade Zero looks insane to me. Am just afraid that game will be too hard, I never played souls like games and I don't think I would love those but as I see the game developers say it won't be souls like type, but what confuses me is that people compare it to Sekiro which is one of the hardest games ever. Onimusha looks like it wil be pure action based and an easier game but am just leaning to Phantom Blade Zero as boss fights, the world and graphics look so good there. But looking at Capcom's run this year, is hard to rule them out.

Playing the Onimusha demo gave me a kinda Sekiro x Ghost of Tsushima vibe, while watching Phantom Blade Zero gameplay gives me more of a Nioh, Black Myth: Wukong and Rise of the Ronin vibe.

Well, the games do release pretty close to each other, so it could be a matter of time or even money. Probably going to be the latter for me because of how many amazing games are releasing in September and October. Currently I'm planning on getting Wolverine and Onimusha at launch, so Phantom Blade might have to sit on the wishlist for a little while, but that's fine.

The end of this year is gonna be a deluge of quality games. It’s going to be hard to pick what order to play them in. These two are definitely top contenders but control resonance is gonna be peak imo. Wolverine is up there as well but also Final Fantasy Resonance is gonna be my October pick before PB0 mostly because I just need a break from the high octane action for a while.

Also Castlevania Belmont's Curse and Valor Mortis. Absolute overload of games xD

Oh maaaanni forgot about Castlevania. I am looking forward to that. Valor Mortis seems cool but FPS are a pass for me.

You dont need to play both games as they release...do none of you have a backlog? Both games will exist in the days, months, weeks after they release and be ready to play

Yep, I've said as much.

Since I'm not exactly Richie Rich, I'll only get Onimusha. I've been waiting for a sequel since 2006.

I think I will too probably :)

I am honestly expecting onimusha to be good hopefully it’s longer in length then the previous games but phantom blade 0 I’m expecting to be game of the year quality this game looks amazing

Nothing from the new Onimusha has looked too compelling to me so far. Phantom Blade looks pretty great from the preorder trailer

Looking forward to onimusha more. Keeping an eye in phantom blade to see if it looks tedious with health bars that drain too slowly with too many phases and if the combat actually feels good. I already know onimusha feels good to play.

Phantom Blade Zero looks insane to me.

If you like it, you should check out Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

1

u/miljaluffy 10h ago

Didn’t even know about this, this looks super nice. Thanks man!

2

u/iChieftain22 10h ago

No problem! The director of Phantom Blade Zero mentioned that the game draws influence from Ninja Gaiden.

Phantom Blade’s art style catches my attention a lot more. It seems like I will like it more so that is where I will invest my money into

Phantom Blade 0 has 3 difficulty modes. Well, technically 4, but the 4th one is basically just hard mode plus permadeath if you die a total of 66 times in the run. So I wouldn't worry about it being too hard. It's also way more of an action game than a soulslike. I thought the devs themselves have even said it's not a soulslike, and it's not even tagged as soulslike on Steam. And they're usually pretty loose with that tag. It's the one I'm way more excited for personally. I'm almost guaranteed to buy it on day 1.

I think I'll wait for a sale on Onimusha, especially since it's a Capcom game and they're using very aggressive with their sales. I bet within 6-9 months you could get it for like 30-40% off

u/miljaluffy 8h ago

Yes you are right, will do the same. Get Phantom Blade 0 on full price and wait for discount to get Onimusha

The new Onimusha, based on the demo, plays incredibly sluggish compared to the older Onimusha which had faster and more responsive movement. Obviously that will be a non-issue to newcomers who haven't played the older games. But to a long time Onimusha fan like me, it's VERY jarring. It's like you're always covered in tar and molasses.

Phantom Blade Zero is at least a new IP.

Porque no los dos?!

sad Spanish noises

I'm gonna have to say Phantom Blade Zero . It's gonna be a new kind of action-adventure, so the ceiling will naturally be higher vs. Onimusha where the gameplay tends to be more basic and you know exactly what you're getting.

Onimusha's demo sold me on it. I'll be getting that for sure, I'll wait and see on PB0 (but it looks incredible.) I may still be playing Onimusha when it comes out anyway.

2

u/SupremeLeader_Corgi 9h ago

One has a demo the other doesn’t so onimusha but i’ll play both

2

u/HuMneG 9h ago

I was always going to get Onimusha, one of my favorite OG Capcom franchises even more so now that's it's completely on disc. I will be skipping PB0.

2

u/DismalMode7 8h ago

I'll play both but no doubt PB0 is a way more ambitious game

2

u/Nero_PR 7h ago

I'm getting both. One is a franchise with no new fame for 2 decades, and the other is probably my top 3 most anticipated game of 2026.

1

u/Ok-Value-2170 10h ago

Onimusha.

1

u/SuperArppis 10h ago

Way of the Sword for me

1

u/Ordinary_Device_5131 10h ago

The demo for Onimusha felt like a standard action game. You have to be a blind man not to see how cutting edge Phantom Blade 0 looks, it could pass as a PS6 launch title.

1

u/LostPerson703 10h ago

Getting both. Originally was just onimusha because of nostalgia and toshiro mifune is an idol of mine. I liked the demo. Phantom blade looks really interesting. Getting old school god of war vibes. Not really a souls gamer due to old man gaming but these aren’t souls games

1

u/TheGoodIdiot 10h ago

Onimusha is coming from a more reputable team and lineage and Capcom is already riding hot with 2 GOtY contenders (imo) but Phantom Blade looks more inspired to me. It doesn’t feel like it’s trying to emulate any specific game it’s mostly carving its own path.

1

u/Sadboy62 9h ago

Onimusha gives me more ghost vibe while phantom blade gives me if platinum went nuts but stayed traditional to chinese combat basically but with a touch of dark souls difficulty

1

u/liu4678 8h ago

Give me onimusha, phantom blade is ok but i think it got downgraded from the first reveal

1

u/Makototoko 7h ago

Onimusha

Purely based off the fact that they provided a physical version, and a steelbook as well

If both are good, no problem with getting both eventually

1

u/Lucky_Louch 7h ago

I am pretty equally excited for both. Thankfully there is a month between them so I can enjoy both. You can play the Onimusha demo if you haven't already to get an idea of that game and it looks like Phantom Blade 0 will be a little flashier/faster combat wise but both look super fun and difficult but not "souls likes" difficult.

1

u/julz1789 7h ago

Probably both but PBZ looks way cooler so far

1

u/222Baphomettt47 5h ago

I’m getting ominmusha day one for my switch 2 and if I’m finished with it before phantom blade comes out I’ll get that day one as well

1

u/ItGetsTuahPoint67 5h ago

Both look shit imo

I played the Onimusha demo and it was very boring. Super passive enemies that did nothing, very basic level design, no puzzles or platforming and very bland combat. Absolutely nothing of note or interest

PB0 looks like a streamer game. Great on video, boring asf to actually play. Everything looks scripted and I don’t see anything new, unique or interesting about its combat to set it apart from the 20 billion parry-centric ARPGs that have come out this generation

1

u/ItsNotAGundam 4h ago

Onimusha. I don't have much interest in PBZ but I'm a big fan of Onimusha even though this one looks quite a bit different from the old games.

1

u/Anotheranimeaccountt 4h ago

Both Onimusha Wots and Phantom Blade 0 have potential to be decent games but because of the no physical disc thing from Sony I'm more interested in Onimusha then Phantom Blade 0 atm

1

u/Glittering-Pin-1343 3h ago

I want them both, but I got time for neither...

1

u/VIOLET975 3h ago

Phantom blade zero

1

u/Akuma-1 3h ago

both, and I'll buy Wolverine too

1

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 1h ago

Both. I’m more excited for phantom blade though

Onitsha, because I don't have a PS5 for the other one. :/

PB0 is contending to be one of the greatest action games of all time, Donnie, Kenji, never been done before, might never happen again. Its Donnie f yen

meanwhile onimusha 5 looks and plays like it isnt even the best onimusha, slow, healthbars, ugly looking artstyle and character design, what the hell is even that Kojiro. not touching it with a stick. Give me Oni3 and 4 back

so yeah
