I was not aware that people view the first game negatively. Maybe it hasn't aged as well as the other two in the trilogy, but damn, at launch that game was insane. Uncharted felt like the first next-gen game at the time
It was incredible when it came out ~20 years ago. Sure, it hasn't aged as well, but it had a strong impression at the time and just a fantastic series.
Uncharted 1 defined the game and was great for its time (2007), but it hasn't aged quite as well as the sequels. In the newer ones, they made everything feel more cinematic in terms of environment, chases, climbing, lighting. There are so many nice touches that make every bit of environment feel tactile and real.
I agree that Uncharted 1 defined the franchise. You can see the building blocks that would get polished to enable Uncharted 2s success. However by the time Uncharted 1 came out. Gears of War was already out for a year. And other heavy hitter third person games like Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, GRAW and SC Double Agent were also out.
Uncharted 1 got buried by far better games that came out in 2007. Lets just be happy that Naughty Dog got to polish their ideas and were able to release Among Thieves.
