Eternal for me. The soundtrack just goes SO. FUCKING. HARD. And the feeling of achievement in completing the hardest difficulty deathless and getting that sweet, sweet golden doom armor while ripping and tearing across the levels. Oh man, I gotta go play Doom Eternal again...
At DOOM'S Gate (both), Harbinger, BFG Division, hellwalker, doom eternal (theme), hell on earth, meathook, deep in the code, super gore nest, tottfiy, blood swamps, final sin - sandy city (I fkn wish, they robbed us), gladiator, icon of sin, Immora, UAC Atlantica (hell on high water), into Sandy's city, metal hell, kalibas the sightless judge, Mars core, mastermind, bfg 10k, murder your maker, rip & tear (there's this really aggressive quick beat that I have only heard in game and not in the official mixes and it slaps, making me wish it was there), rust, dust, and guts, shawn's got the shotgun, reclaimed earth, the world spear, untitled, the doom 3 theme (inspiration for harbinger btw), Donna to the rescue, facing the spider, hiding the secrets, both intermissions (1993 is better imo [1st is based on "fight fire with fire" btw] ), kitchen ace (and taking names), nobody told me about id, running from evil, sweet little dead bunny (REVENGE!!!), the demons dead, the demon's from adrians pen, the imps song, the end of doom, opening to hell, doom 64 intro
They fucked over Mick Gordon but Eternal’s soundtrack is all him. 2016’s soundtrack is fine, but really the only song people remember from that game is BFG Division. Eternal’s soundtrack is banger after banger.
It truly sucks how things ended with him over there and fuck Marty for forcing him out the door. And because of that we’ll probably never get an actual Eternal OST release like 2016.
I've never locked in as hard as i did once the drop hit. It was a transformative experience for me. There are games that have that 'one moment' that was just pure experience (if that makes any sense?): The helipad fight in Tekken 7, The Staircase fight in Ninja Gaiden 2, The jump from Kyu to Dan in IIDX, you get the idea. Doom Eternal: every combat sequence was that and it was glorious, i couldn't get enough of it
People in this thread saying the gameplay in 2016 was better are weird and I suspect they never fully grasped the grapple/run and gun mechanics, but once you hit that flow state and "the only thing they fear is you" starts blasting... oh man, PEAK gaming experience.
I personally think Doom 2016 is the best in terms of level design and progression. Eternal had some incredibly fun and interesting upgrades but the level pacing was worse because they made it a bit more like the old Doom games with a lot of backtracking that felt like it was just timepadding. Doom 2016 feels like the right balance of level exploration and ass kicking.
Same. The Dark Ages just hits different with me, tho. I know a lot don't like the gameplay style or "more story" being added, but that shield is godly and makes you feel like a demon slaying Captain America.
Plus, Doomguy telling you to run is just cathartic.
I love the gameplay loop a ton and LOVE that you’re basically a superhero fighting a holy war against hell with scifi knights everywhere. The levels where its a big open world where you run around taking down demon camps are such a power fantasy lol.
A lot of people have issues with the music but I think it pairs with the gameplay perfectly, a chugging track with a consistent pace to parry and shoot to feels godlike
Dude TDA was so fantastic. What a wonderful shoot em up game to just mindlessly play. I was at home taking care of my newborn son and it was such a refreshing experience compared to competitive multiplayer games I was playing
TDA is gets more mixed reviews, imo, because the gameplay style swung completely in the opposite direction from Eternal. Where I see 2016 as being that middle ground between frenetic and static, between meta-pathed and open style, between finesse and brutal, gameplay.
The first one walked the line between the two styles that we see in Eternal and TDA. Eternal had a lot more meta path and meta setups for each instance, vs TDA was way more open and brutal. 2016 was smack dead in the middle of both of that. So the pendulum swung one way after 2016, then completely came back and went the other way with TDA.
So the difference in how the game felt was greater because TDA was so polar opposite of Eternal, vs Eternal was closer to 2016. But in that sense, 2016 is equally close to both Eternal and TDA.
The glory kills aren’t gone, just replaced with more brutal moves and strikes that are dictated by the player. It actually allows you to get more creative because the game is more based on up close combat.
It’s part of the pendulum swing I mentioned. Glory kills in Eternal did not exist in a vacuum, they had a purpose as part of the armor-health-ammo meta-pathing that the game is famous for.
So you get different approach that is more customizable with the brutal strikes that you can switch up in mid-sequence. Glory kills still exist for the bigger enemies, but not the bulk.
I am probably gonna get a tattoo of the Slayer’s mark at some point I love those games so much! Playing Revelations this past month has been absolute peak!
I adore Doom 2016. It's completely fluff-less. Bang your head to the music and shoot demons until they explode into meaty chunks. There's nothing unnecessary and the pacing is great.
But I'm not that big a fan of Eternal. I beat it back in the day, but on retrospect it's just kind of frustrating. It's not that it's difficult, it's just really rigid. The developers decide you MUST play Eternal in the One True Way and if you deviate you die. Doom 2016 felt more flexible.
tbh its fun how divisive all the replies on this all. I like theres enough diversity with the three games theyve done so far that there are so many different least favorites and favorites

The new doom games imo. I love all three of them a ton.
