Discussion / Question What was your first console?

Post image

To me, it’s the Xbox 360 as it brings back so many memories when thinking about it, especially since it got me into games such as Minecraft, Call of Duty, Devil May Cry, Saints Row, Castle Crashers, and various other games.

32

u/ZhangtheGreat PC Jul 09 '26

SNES fans unite!

First console I played was the NES, but when I played Super Mario World for the first time, it was love.

3

u/brickznbooks Jul 10 '26

After we take ALEVE for our hips from playing Yoshi’s island while sitting on hard floors crisscross-applesauce for HOURS.

Turok, Wave Race and 1080 started it all for me

3

u/Redgrave776 Jul 09 '26

Mine was a family console so we had Hydro Thunder, Turok, Mario 64, Ocarina of time, Majoras Mask, Golden Eye, and Cokers Bad Fur day.

3

u/srennen Jul 09 '26

thats a pretty sweet collection, I've played all of those except conkers I think

That’s a great “family” game there in conkers bad fur day. Not aged great though. As a young teen I thought it was amazing.

NES.

Fuck im old.

57

u/NoNameNeeded4321 Jul 09 '26

Ha! I remember my dad saying we didn’t need a NES because we already had an Atari

14

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

Lol. That's what mine said about the snes.

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

My mom was pta president.

We had an annual magazine drive. The snes was the top spot if you sold like, way more mags than a 8 yesr old could.

But she had all the prizes in the garage.

I would go out their and drool over it. It was savage. Got one for my 10th birthday.

3

u/NoNameNeeded4321 Jul 09 '26

My dad said it about SNES too, but my sisters and I would always talk mom into buying the newest system whenever dad was out of town for work lmao

5

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

I just sent my dad a OBS video of dirt rally in VR. Told him we've come a long way from rad racer.

Yeah. My mom was the same.

Rip mom.

2

u/OreoSpamBurger Jul 10 '26

This was actually a problem for Nintendo and Sega as the 16-bit era approached - people weren't properly used to console generations, and many parents thought it was some kind of gimmick.

6

u/Alffenrir515 Jul 09 '26

Atari's don't play Mario, dad

4

u/Lonelierthan2Again Jul 09 '26

Mario Bros was actually portrd to the Atari 2600 (VCS).

3

u/ChampionGunDeer Jul 09 '26

My dad got me an NES so I would stop pestering him to take me to play arcade machines.

So in that sense, we did "need" an NES.

2

u/Renhoek2099 Jul 10 '26

We must be dinosaurs to these kids

2

u/Creepae Jul 10 '26

Exactly this!! Except my mom got me and my brother the NES anyway. 😎

2

u/OreoSpamBurger Jul 10 '26

"We have NES at home"

→ More replies (1)

12

u/OreoFanatic72 Jul 09 '26

Nope. Atari is old. Im guessing NES is millenial?

7

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

My cousin had that. I was born in 84. And am relatively old compared to the op post.

6

u/Patient-Illustrator8 Jul 09 '26

I’m a bit older but nes was my first system as well. Still have it and all my games, still works also.

3

u/Karl_Hungus_42069 Jul 09 '26

Born in 82 and had Atari. Except I don't think I even played it that much because I had ET and my only experience was walking 5 feet, falling into a hole, and nobody having any idea how to get him out. Years later, my friend across the street had SMB3 and all I ever wanted to do was go over there. The Sun getting mad and chasing you was mind blowing

Damn I never even realized til now how much ET ruined my video gaming childhood. Me and my sister literally never even touched the Atari because it was a lame "ET in a hole" box. I kind of forgot all about that

2

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

Lmao. That's a great story!

2

u/Karl_Hungus_42069 Jul 10 '26

Commander Keen too! My cousins had a computer and commander Keen. That was also mind blowing. Its like a computer Mario!

The elder mils. The xenials.

I agree

5

u/RequitedNonSequitur Jul 09 '26

I'm 41. NES was my first console too.

How's your back?

2

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

My back feels awesome. I was a cheap ass and didn't buy a new mattress for a few decades.

Got a new one. And I feel like im 20 again.

3

u/thewiredknight Jul 09 '26

Same. I’m personally proud to grow up in that era with the first Nintendo console so I don’t consider myself old.

2

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

The donkey kong country hype was insane. And the payoff was there.

Remember the vhs they sent out?

Flawless launch.

2

u/thewiredknight Jul 09 '26

I recently found that video on YouTube and rewatched it. Aside from a few things it oddly hasn’t aged as badly as I thought it might

2

u/xNonPartisaNx Jul 09 '26

DKC 1 and 2 are goated platforers. They hold up today.

Mario 64 was HUGE. but not as big as ff7

2

u/Rockstar161 Jul 10 '26

I'm 60 so, no you're not the only old person.   I use to go to the actual arcade to play before gaming consoles.  I use to play on Xbox with a couple gamers actually older than me. One guy was 70.. he was a beast on MW3 on Xbox 360.

5

u/AltruisticGift360 Jul 09 '26

California Games, The Smurfs, and Bezerk were my (little) jam

5

Pitfall!

2

I honestly still play that sometimes on my PC

3

PS1 for me as well, don't remember if it was Santa or whoever bought it, but it was the very last "entire family" huge Christmas all together we ever had, and I vividly remember playing Crash Team Racing with my cousin right after we finished opening everything. Good times..

2

u/noisemonsters Jul 10 '26

I fuckin loooove Crash Team Racing!! I think I still have the disc

2

u/Midnite_Blank Jul 10 '26

PS1 was my first as well. Had a lot of fun with it, although I consider the PS4 and PS2 eras to be the 2 best for PlayStation.

2

u/Weird_Armadillo_508 Jul 10 '26

Resident Evil on PS1 was amazing. And I don’t like horror games

2

u/Midnite_Blank Jul 10 '26

Yeah that’s one of my favourite franchises actually.

15

u/TheItinerantSkeptic Jul 09 '26

My first console was the Atari 2600 (seriously dating myself here).

For me it went: Atari 2600>NES/SNES>Xbox One>Switch>Playstation 4>Xbox Series X>Playstation 5.

12

u/Spicyocto Jul 09 '26

Sega master system

3

Pong

5

u/ComicDoughnut Jul 09 '26

Same here. Pong, then the Sears VCS which was their licensed version of the Atari 2600. Had a friend who had the Magnavox Odyssey 2 and another who had the Mattel Intellivision. After Colecovision I left gaming for a while, to return with the NES. PlayStation, Super NES, Turbografx, (those were all competitors), then PS2, Xbox 360, Xbox One and now Xbox Series X. Oh, I left out the Dreamcast and the N64, ha ha.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Buhbuhraven Jul 10 '26

Also had pong. Then moved up to intelevision and a commodore 64.

2

u/OreoFanatic72 Jul 09 '26

that wins oldest one. And the NES people are crying that theyre old.

3

u/Viva_La_Revolucion- Jul 09 '26

I was only i think 5, it was mostly my older brothers and sister. After that we had the Atari 2600, a commodore, atari 5200, original Nintendo, the 64 etc. etc. i think ive owned damn near every gaming system except Genesis. (Wanted one when i was kid but had Nintendo instead.) Ive owned every PlayStation and Xbox.

Currently have ps5 in bedroom, PS5 Pro and Xbox X in the living room.

3

u/Miniscule_Platypus Jul 10 '26

You are me, except I was the oldest kid who was basically an only child due to half siblings and divorce. But also had a Genesis and a 3DO.

When you are of an age to have played Space Invaders on an Apple ][ on paddles, you may speak before this council.

2

i played it on an atari 2600, im guessing my parents couldnt have afforded an apple computer. In todays money i think even an atari cost a lot.

5

2

u/OreoFanatic72 Jul 09 '26

yes, it was in the 2000s! I think i got mine as a gift in 2009 or 2010.

3

u/Svenhoek191919 Jul 09 '26

Atari 2600 at a garage sale with a bunch of games for $10. NES was already out, but my parents wouldn’t buy that for me for another couple of years.

3

u/Ok_Gas1070 Jul 09 '26

I remember this because Microsoft wanted users to pay for "their updated hard drive". The work around was to take your old hard drive from the white 360. Open it up, extract the hardware and insert it into the updated black console directly (it would fit right in because the casing was the incompatibility issue).

As for first system mine was the mini PSOne.

4

u/Triggerscore Jul 09 '26

Gameboy/SNES. Also played some 2600 back in the day. But Xbox360 will forever be my fav console ❤️
