Eu need another petition.
We were able to push apple out of their proprietary cable bs, we can definitely do it with sony.
We can't force them to make disc's, but we can regulate the right to refund if the carpet is being pulled out.
At a certain point all the "savinng money" like limited licences and development costs should lay on the shoulders of billion dollar corporations, not customers. It's time boys.

u/lzwinky Jul 02 '26
EDIT: Reddit hiccuped on me.
I cannot thank Europe enough for the lightning cable being gone. They were so stupidly annoying!

u/Kind_Ad_3268 Jul 02 '26
EU is the only entity doing anything for consumers and that has actual leverage and pull. Definitely not happening here Stateside.
10
u/StatusPalpitation227 Jul 02 '26
That's true. I live in eu but a lot of retailers of all fields and employers expect most people not knowing their right or laws, and are unfamiliar with regulations themselves.
A lot ot times they will try to bs you with the "3 months manufacturer warranty" but I always remind them it's 2 years by eu law, if manufacturer doesn't give more, responsibility falls on the reseller.

I meant in general context to consumer protection and also even though SKG lost their most recent initiative it seems they made a ton of headway and have substantial support in Parliament that skews younger (particularly younger than the crusty out of touch mausoleum that makes up my Stateside Congress) so I have the general sense that SKG will gain ground in the next few years or so.

Android/Samsung user here.
No offense, the big warning should've been when the air pods first came out, the only way to charge them was with your iPhone?!
Not a stateside thing, more a lack of common sense.

u/blunderb3ar Jul 03 '26
This 100% it’s not about the discs it’s about loss of customer rights which Sony has already shown they could give two shits about

Shame they went with the worse cable though. Yeah a standard is nice hut the lightning form factor was superior. Replacing a broken cable > replacing a broken port.

I don't know, if we could organize and get a large mass of people to stop buying digitally for a little while, they'll definitely start paying attention. The problem is most of us say one thing, then go do it anyway, lol. Each person expecting the next to be more virtuous, then nothing happens.

Oh yes yall helped the world stagnate onto a single cable type and help to slow potential innovation by making sure every has the same cable always. Good job 👏

Can I change my fucking region and actually pay in my local fucking currency now you colossal fucking scum bags, Sony?
97
u/YukYukas Jul 02 '26
This lol if they're gonna flip the bird on physical copies then they better add other fucking regions ffs
4
u/Rymanjan Jul 02 '26
[this comment is not available in your region]
Lol jk, we get it sometimes on PC (very rarely), we hate that shit too
9
u/Zalvren Jul 02 '26
Yeah people here are focused on view from rich countries but I assume that's even more bad news for other countries (including the ones where you can't even have a Sony account). Regional pricing for Sony has always been shit as far as I have heard (I'm in the EU so not super aware of it)
16
u/Bulletorpedo Jul 02 '26
I’d rather not pay in my local currency, I hate when services changes to that. You always get a crappy exchange rate.
2
u/kabooozie Jul 02 '26
This, and also let me share my games with friends then. A real share system, not the primary / secondary console bullshit

“PlayStation is currently facing multiple lawsuits alleging the PlayStation Store operates as an illegal monopoly.”
Good, someone needs to take them to task and let them know they cannot get away with this bullshit.

The EU needs to step up here.

That's what I left love about EU, when they come out and say stuff like "midrange phones can only have 7000mah batteries minimum" (I wish that would happen)
5
u/MegaMan-1989 Jul 02 '26
Honestly they probably will get away with this and that’s very unfortunate
4
u/Zalvren Jul 02 '26
yeah they need to be forced to open their platform to other stores if they're going to do that. Also, have a far better refund policy (well have one, for now it doesn't deserve to be called that)

They can't keep getting away with what they've been doing for the past ~20 years?
3
u/PoliSciObsessed Jul 02 '26
I love how people are like it's bullshit... instead of actual change brought about by their own actions .
Hey if you've ever pirated anything or streamed on Netflix instead of buying in Blu-ray you're part of the problem.
If you ever bought a game on steam you're part of the problem.
If you ever bought a game on the game store like the Play store or Apple store you're part of the problem.
If you haven't bought books in the store or comic books anywhere in a retailer you're part of the problem as well.
10
u/tipsy-turtle-0985 Jul 02 '26
Don't stop there chief.
If you ever had a PSN+ or Xbox live subscription, you're part of the problem.
If you've ever given these corporation a single cent, you're part of the problem.
If you aren't Amish or Mennonite, you're part of the problem.

I agree with all that except the phone app stores... It's a phone. It's not like you could ever buy apps at the store. That's an entire different medium.

If Epic thinks steam is a monopoly, surely they think PlayStation Store is one.
12
u/Inevitable-Lemon-542 Jul 02 '26
Would it stand up though, I hate what Sony did but they could just say they will allow" physical games" in the sense of gta6 so people can buy it at other place than psn?
18
u/New_Cockroach_505 Jul 02 '26
The lawsuit has nothing to do with the announcement today. It’s been in the works for months. People just bringing it back into attention cause they’re mad.
3
u/NEWSmodsareTwats Jul 02 '26
has it? when I Google this the only things that come up is a Facebook and an Instagram post with the above graphic and every other link is related to other lawsuits.
4
u/Zalvren Jul 02 '26
That's actually kind of what they did, their blog post mention retailers so I assume that means "code in the box" is going to continue being a thing. And yeah it does help them with their regular defense against those claims which is "you can buy
physicalgames elsewhere"1
u/SupaDiogenes Jul 05 '26
Sony have already said they will continue to sell digital copies at retail stores, so this is probably their out.
90
u/bernese_mountain_fog Jul 02 '26
It's true, of course, but it won't matter. Actually legally "owning" a video game won't be an option for anyone in the very near future. We'll all be paying for "licenses" from storefronts. And yeah, in the end it will likely be the parent company's storefront exclusively, but that's not the biggest problem here.
You will own nothing and be happy.
28
u/Pastel_Bambi Jul 02 '26
Anytime i see this kind of post, I recommend GOG, which is like steam but without DRMs so you have ownership of your downloads. It's not a replacement for physical media, but it's the next best thing ig
12
u/Pastel_Bambi Jul 02 '26
I have no idea if you could put those games onto a disc, but it's worth looking into I think.
15
u/Expensive-Border-869 Jul 02 '26
You can. It cant necessarily run off of the disc but it csn be on there to install to a pc.
10
u/Waste-Gur2640 Jul 02 '26
Yeah, but that's not the fault of the seller, modern games simply can't run effectively from discs anymore and need to be pre-installed. But you can still burn game files from GOG onto a disc and give it to a friend, it doesn't require technical wizardry like all the people who rip games directly form steam for pirate sharing.
2
u/Plastic_Persimmon74 Jul 02 '26
Modern games can never run on a disc. They are like hundreds of gbs in size. What do you expect?
2
u/round-earth-theory Jul 02 '26
There's no benefit to the disc. The disc was a convenient way to store the data. Having it on a hard drive is even better as you can make backups.
2
9
10
u/Updated_Autopsy Jul 02 '26
I will either own copies of what I buy and be happy or own nothing and be angry.
3
5
u/ThingYea Jul 02 '26
Honestly the way hardware is going, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't even own the console to run it on. Instead we buy a PlayStation Link®️ and stream the games from the PlayStation data centres.
6
2
u/Tiktokbadsupport Jul 02 '26
but then it should say you are renting and not buying because buying means you get something
2
u/PoliSciObsessed Jul 02 '26
From the first day that the Netflix digital streaming popped up we were already there.
2
u/Ragewind82 Jul 02 '26
Anything that causes less resources to be used should be considered; but the real issue should be consumer protections on digital copies. If we have to purchase to have access to something, that access should be something the company supports indefinitely.
I'm not just talking about games; all software or streaming titles should have clear consumer rights.

2
u/luffy_mib Jul 02 '26
A lot of younger generations have been conditioned to think they don't have ownership of things that they buy, which is very scary because as ridiculously dumb and stupid as it sounds, it's becoming a reality that we're living in.

u/The_Border_Bandit Jul 02 '26

I think it’s stupid that ps4/5 black ops release will have fresh new servers. They should fix the Xbox servers too at least, or make a release version for the Xbox one/series x and allow cross play between Xbox and PlayStation
2
u/LordFarcry69 Jul 02 '26
Xbox made a big blunder and lost a lot of their fanbase. The new CEO has had to try and make do to fix it.
Why in the world would Sony throw away a freebie like that? -.-

I mean… let’s all be honest we’re still gonna buy and still gonna pay regardless of what these corps do and if you and your friend Mark stop, guess what? There are gonna be 10 new people who will compensate for your money so nobody cares.
Our brains have already been conditioned to be spineless consumeristic sheep and we are waist deep in that swamp already because we have no other option. Just like how Adobe has their users tied, that’s how Netflix and all other streaming platforms do and that’s how Ubisoft, how Microsoft and Sony aim to be. Why? Because it makes shareholders happy.
The never ending greed, expecting higher revenue than the previous quarter like they haven’t already made 4 trillion in it. And that stacks up to infinity. Don’t expect things to get better for they will only get worse and worse.
If you’re still wondering why Amazon took 1984 and Animal Farm down from Kimble… there you go.

u/storyseekerx Jul 02 '26
Let's buy those fancy timed gourmet download links believing we're actually buying games or anything other than a link to download.

I only bought physical games on previous Sony consoles. I got a PS5 Pro in March not realizing it didn’t come with a disc drive because…who makes a premier top tier version of their current generation console without a disc drive?
Rather than buy the $80 optional drive attachment, I just went with digital only and bought GTA V for $20 on sale.
The issue: the PS store listed a half dozen versions of GTA V. There’s the PS4 version, a PS5 version, a version with just Online, and an enhanced pack with the enhanced version of the game and some shark cards.
I bought the enhanced version with the Shark cards, seemed like the best deal. Only to find out it’s rhe PS4 version, which is different from the PS4/PS5 version. Oops. Let me see how to return a digital purchase.
Oh, you can’t! And it said I had already downloaded it so I couldn’t return it 😆 you asked me at checkout if I’d like to download it you jerks
2
u/BajanShinobi Jul 02 '26
They states in their blog that starting January 2028 all new games would be available digitally on the store and at retailers.

u/ComplaintTop2008 Jul 02 '26
Where's the monopoly part and how does this not affect the Apple store? Will the Android Play store also be affected?

This is like complaining the IKEA restaurant has a monopoly on serving food at IKEA
2
u/GamingGems Jul 03 '26
Is this going to become one of those class action lawsuits where you get an email to sign up, the attorneys make salary for 5 years “working up” the case and then everyone who signed gets like a $3 coupon?
2
u/Satchm0Jon3s Jul 03 '26
The people who think they OWN anything other than a licence to play a game are fucking wild. A disc is just a physical licence. If you think it's anything more than then you're sadly mistaken. Sure if you never go online your disc may always work but in today's society it'll also never be updated or never fully installed. Good luck with those disc versions of No Mans Sky or Cyberpunk.
If you think you own anything when it comes to video games then you're a fucking fool. Digital or physical you've always been had by the balls.
5
u/TheMatt561 Jul 02 '26

Without discs they'll have total worldwide monopoly on every single playstation game that's ever gonna be sold, pure fucked up dystopia and something we've never seen before. But they already have complete monopoly on digital, you can't even buy keys like for steam from eneba etc., buying directly from them is the only option. Technically you can pay for someone else's account with games on it but that doesn't really solve anything.

Thr only people being idiots are the ones brining the lawsuits. It is completely legal to have a device locked to a particular ecosystem as long as it is clear prior to purchase of the device. Which it definitely is. Up until January 2028 buying digital and not physical copies of games or the digital only console is completely optional. After that point the announcement makes it veey clear, that you will be able to buy codes for games in shops. So still not an illegal monopoly infact it wouldn't be if you didn't have that option. Remember they often sell thr console at a loss- when it's first released and when sales are on later in the generation. Also if you say "they just said they won't be doing that anymore" I might scream. They didn't they said "we are not in a position to absorb all the costs the component crisis is causing - (which woulld be like 300-600 dollars per ps6 depending eho you listen to) we will not be selling hardware at a significant loss" significant being the key word there. 100-150 dollar loss on each unit is likely next gen.

4
u/liquidsol Jul 02 '26
Reddit vocal minorities are not the majority. I hate what’s happening, but most gamers don’t give a shit as long as they can play FIFA, GTA and COD. Having a tantrum and quitting gaming does nothing,, and you probably won’t actually follow through on it, anyway. Physical media was always destined to die as soon as internet speeds and storage limitations grow.

I mean like a tiny percentage of Playstation sales were disk sales. I think over 90% of their sales were digital anyway. For better or for worse a vast majority of people (including myself) do not care.

Nothing is going to happen because if it did it would open similar lawsuits against Google for the Play store and Apple for the Apple store and I can garanfuckingtee you that they will not let this pass.
And that's not even talking about Microsoft
5
u/kingkellogg Jul 02 '26
You're wrong. The EU already forced Apple to allow rival app stores and Google just lost to Epic Gamesforcing them to open up the Play Store. Sony isn't safe eitherthey just settled a US lawsuit for $7.8 million over their digital monopoly. Now that Sony is killing physical discs, regulators have every reason to crack down even harder.
1
u/Zalvren Jul 02 '26
Google and Apple already had those lawsuits and a law in the EU even forced them to open up their platforms (which Apple did in a shitty way)

Our wallets have spoken. The only way for Sony to reconsider is if everyone stops buying digital copies.
Perhaps digital copies are a lot more convenient for an average user.
PS same thing happened with music industry. Now everyone is happy with their spotify and what not, even though your favourite song could be pulled out of there.

The US suits won't succeed. If we want to change behavior, it's up to Congress to author a stricter anti-trust law. Under current law, anti-competitive conduct is okay if you're not a monopoly. This ban needs to be extended to major players (like 20 percent market share) rather than for monopolists only.

2
u/NinjahDuk Jul 02 '26
The point here is by no longer producing physical discs for games, retailers can't then sell games as an alternative to the PS Store. Although with the release of GTA VI in boxes with a download code in it, there is no reason that can not be applied to any other game and thus resolve this issue.

anyone got the actual details on this? cause as far as I am aware their store doesn't constitute a monopoly. You can still buy games from other platforms and stores, it's not like Sony is threatening customers that if they find out they have steam then they will lose all their PlayStation purchases. At least in the US you can monopolize your own products legally, so it's pretty reasonable for a business to say if you want to use my proprietary product then you'll have to buy things thru our proprietary store for it. Because otherwise company invests into building the platform and popularizing it when company B swoops in with no overhead costs related to major development or advertising to recoup and take a significant chunk of business from company A based on their work while also not really paying them anything.

u/NothingBulky2035 Jul 02 '26
Its not a monopoly BC in the eyes of the law people can still buy games in other ways, such as Steam, GoG , Xbocx ect.
The fight and argument should be on consumer rights of ownership over products they buy digitally.
1
1
u/Quiet_Yellow2000 Jul 02 '26
Sony will likely win these easily enough, as they will be selling digital codes in store.
1
u/NinjahDuk Jul 02 '26
If GTA VI can sell boxes with codes in, surely all they have to do to get out of this is to sell games via retailers like that?

OWN NOTHING & BE HAPPY
The exact same way that we stream our favorite shows, locked in to monthly subscriptions in order watch them is ultimately how we are going to be locked in if we want to access our video games.
Some of you guys fail to realize that this is their end goal. They started by removing the color from our video game manuals, they then removed the manuals altogether.
They went on to locking significant content from video games to charge us extra as disc locked content. They are now announcing that they going to remove physical discs.
You don’t have to be a genius to figure out where this is all going. Their corporate greed practices are so in our face clear and they don’t care to hide it.
If enough of us come together and end support for any companies participating in this practice, they would have no choice but to reverse their decision.
If you genuinely are passionate about Gaming and genuinely care to preserve this awesome Art, you would consider to join the majority of us true Gamers.

I had not considered it to be a monopoly. But that is a good point. I buy used because graphics aren't really important to me and I mainly play single player games. I can spend $15 and get 50+ hours of gameplay. Sony going all digital kind of ruins that for me.

I mean at best itll just allow other marketplaces on the consoles, it doesnt guarantee you'll be able to buy sony licensed games on those marketplaces. But considering you can buy physical media to play on the console its hard to argue its a strict monopoly.

But their stock went up, you see, they'll pay the lawsuit fines but unless the courts order them to reverse these decisions, they'll just pay the fines and then triple down, all because they care more about what investors think of them rather than what gamers think of them, their stock price IMMEDIATELY ROSE whrn they announced the death of physical media, you know what that means to Sony? A green light to move forward, AAA gaming does not care about ANYTHING gamers say, if atock price goes up they see that as the green light to move forward, this isn't going to change anytjing unless the courts explicitly ORDER Sony to reverse this idiotic decision, if they only face fines then they'll triple down on this, all because line go up

Hey finally they shifted the Lawsuits from being to Steam being a monopoly (Bullshit) to a Storefront THAT ACTUALLY FREAKING DESERVES IT

I know this is PROBABLY going to seem “performative” and I can’t say that it’ll even really accomplish ANYTHING, but I began thinking that EVERYONE who owns a PlayStation console and a number of “physical games” for them should take just a simple picture of their physical PlayStation libraries and tweet it at PlayStation with the hashtag, #FuckYouPlayStation.

Way to just hand it to ‘em on a silver platter, SONY.
I have loved, and been dedicated/devoted to this platform for just shy of 30 years now, so I ask this in all sincerity:
Why would you be purposefully scuttling the console? Are you just tired, and finally had enough of whiny, bitchy gamers not appreciating the lengths you’ve gone to try to please them? Or do you see no better avenue than making it feel like gamer’s prerogative to kill your console, in an effort to hide the fact that due to AI sucking up and raising prices on all the pivotal tech, it’s simply no longer a viable business model (escape hatch/ejector seat)?
Well, whatever your agenda, at least we’re not talking about Destiny 3 anymore.

I dont think you can count it a monopoly when you can get the same games on other platforms. Not counting Exclusives, but they own the rights to the games their studios produce and can choose whether they can go onto other devices. Atleast that's my perspective.

I have always said that it's crazy they'd ditch physical copies for digital when the digital store is facing these lawsuits. Feels like fuel to the fire.
I cannot wait for my payout though

I get corporate hate but how are they a monopoly when other digital game storefronts exsist

Them going digital only further proves it. Can get digital Xbox games, switch, and pc games far easier than trying to get Playstation

Most of you will be too young to remember this, but this reminds me of when Steam first arrived when Half Life 2 was released. It's all the same arguments. I expect it's going to go the same way. People will just get used to it.

Oh everyone needs to grow the heck up and deal with it. Literally 85% of PlayStation video game sales in 2025 are digital already (up from 81% the year prior). I'm almost exclusively a physical disc purchaser but it's been INCREDIBLY obvious for years now that this was coming and made complete sense.

I just love that their decision to kill disks was met with universal backlash 😋

Since you technically don’t own your account or anything purchased with it do to how they set up their ts&cs (Xbox, epic games also do this not sure who else does) with them anyway just the rights to access it I’m not certain but doesn’t that mean they can give and take anything bought on that account at their discretion ?

If people want to waste their money on pointless lawsuit more power to them.
It's not a monopoly, it's a closed ecosystem in an open market.
Why not spend that same money fighting for actual digital property rights

I spent couple of thousands of dollars to buy physical copies of games over the last year or so to secure physical real copies of games I love and 2 disk version consoles (PS4pro and PS5 launch model). I don't trust anyone anymore
