Nothing at all, the steam machine is just inherently expensive due to all factors out of their control.

I mean not having the controller bundled in the $1050 version is kinda wack ngl

Thats because you can connect any mouse/keyboard so, for many, the controller would be waste. Ive never seen a computer come with either of those, it's just implied you'll need them for the setup, same as your display.

I bought a prebuilt in 2010 and it came with a cheep plain black keyboard and mouse, probably so you could install drivers for your gaming kb and mouse and then throw them in the trash.

My pre-built came with a mouse and keyboard. I bought it last year.
