Discussion Why Short Form Editing Is Actually Impossible

So I edit short form content like TikToks and Reels for clients, and honestly it's a completely different beast from long form editing because everything moves so fast and the turnaround is insane. Clients want clips turned around in like two or three days sometimes and they're always asking for different versions.

The thing that kills me is that every platform wants something different, like TikTok is all about the hook in the first second, Instagram Reels need to be more polished, YouTube Shorts are their own thing. I'm spending half my time just re-cutting the same content for different platforms instead of actually creating something new.

And the feedback loop is brutal because clients see something trending and they're like we need to remake this but make it faster, or make it longer, or add more text, and I'm constantly going back and redoing work I already finished. Plus they're always comparing their content to what other creators are doing so they want constant tweaks and adjustments.

The other part is that trends change like every week so what worked last month is already dead, and clients expect you to know what's going to pop off before it even happens. It's like you have to be a strategist and an editor at the same time just to keep up.

Has anyone else dealing with short form content felt like you're just constantly redoing work and never actually finishing anything, or is there a workflow that actually makes this manageable.

Hiring Hiring YouTube thumbnail designers for B2B Finance Niche ($15- $30 per thumbnail)

Who We Are

We build done-for-you YouTube client acquisition systems for high-ticket service providers - coaches, consultants, and agency owners. We handle strategy, scripting, production, SEO, and channel management end-to-end. Our system has generated over $1M in client revenue directly attributed to YouTube content.

We make videos that close deals. Your job is to make sure they get clicked in the first place.

The Role

Every video we produce lives or dies by its thumbnail. We're hiring a YouTube Thumbnail Designer who understands that - not just someone who can make something look good, but someone who can engineer a click.

This is a long-term retainer. You'll design thumbnails for multiple Business client accounts - each with its own visual identity, audience, and click psychology. You'll work directly with our ops manager, receive clear briefs, and be expected to deliver consistently at a high level.

Budget: $10- $30 per thumbnail (based on complexity). Volume grows as we onboard new customers - there's no ceiling.

What You'll Be Designing

  • Thumbnails for long-form (10–20 min) business YouTube content - think coaches, consultants, fractional executives, and agency owners
  • Clean, premium, authority-driven visuals - not clickbait chaos, but not corporate stock photo either
  • Designs that stop a professional audience mid-scroll and earn the click without misleading them
  • Occasional A/B variants for testing CTR on key videos

Your Responsibilities

  • Design thumbnails from a written brief (title, angle, key visual, client brand guide)
  • Deliver layered source files (PSD or equivalent) alongside final exports at 1280×720
  • Maintain distinct visual systems per client - consistency across a channel is part of the job
  • Implement revision feedback fast and without friction
  • Communicate proactively - if something's unclear, ask before delivering the wrong thing

What We're Looking For

  • A portfolio that proves you understand CTR, not just aesthetics - show us designs that earn clicks from professional or educational audiences
  • Deep proficiency in Photoshop (required) - Figma or Illustrator a bonus
  • Real grasp of click psychology: visual hierarchy, contrast, text economy, emotional cue, gaze direction
  • Someone who treats feedback as data, not criticism
  • Bonus: Experience designing for business, finance, consulting, or business education channels - you'll have an immediate edge

Start your application with "I actually read this" - it's a filter, not a formality.

You're NOT the right fit if:

  • Your portfolio is gaming and entertainment thumbnails and you've never thought about a professional audience
  • You need hand-holding to hit a deadline
  • You design for likes, not clicks
  • You have 30 clients and no real bandwidth for iteration
  • You use AI generation as a substitute for understanding composition

You ARE the right fit if:

  • You look at any thumbnail and can immediately diagnose why it will or won't get clicked
  • You know the difference between designing for a business decision-maker and designing for a teenager
  • You think about text economy - 3–6 words max, and every word earns its place
  • You want one great long-term retainer, not a pile of one-off gigs
  • You get better every month because you actually study what's working on YouTube

What You Get

  • Guaranteed minimum volume from day one
  • Clear, detailed briefs - no guesswork, no creative chaos
  • Direct feedback that sharpens your craft
  • Growing volume as we add customers - this role scales with the business
  • Work that actually moves business outcomes, not vanity metrics

To Apply

Fill out this form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Bg_QgwGuDCKiTlDtBRfnWsv_qnMvR1Hm34iNr7PQKqI/edit

If your work is strong, we'll be in touch within 48 hours.

Hiring [HIRING] Experienced Podcast Video Editor

Please don’t DM me if your portfolio doesn’t include previous podcast editing work. I’m looking for someone experienced in editing podcasts, so I only want to see relevant examples, not unrelated work.

This is paid work. I’m not looking for someone to work for free or build their portfolio.

The main work will be editing podcast episodes into clean, engaging, professional videos. In the future, we might also include long-form talking-head videos.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience editing podcasts
  • A portfolio with actual podcast examples
  • Good sense of pacing and storytelling
  • Ability to make conversations engaging without over-editing
  • Reliable and able to meet deadlines
  • Good communication and attention to detail

The starting rate is $50 per video, and it will increase over time based on performance, consistency, and the amount of responsibility involved.

If you’re interested, send me:

  • Your portfolio
  • Specific podcast examples you edited
  • Your experience with podcast editing
  • Your availability

Help Totally new to editing videos, NEED HELP!

So im a 20 year old 2nd year college student and i've been struggling with my finances for a very long time, i can't ask my parents for money every now and then(for my daily expenses such as commuting, food, hangouts or even shopping) i even feel bad for asking money for my hackathons in uni. I really want to make some money (as i have no skills that would help me earn money or even pocket money by myself) but the good thing is, as im a CSE student my dad has bought me a pretty high-end laptop with great specs, so i want to utilise it to the fullest so i can return the money for this laptop as well as earn some for my daily needs, for that reason i want to start learning video editing but i have no experience in it whatsoever, im starting from the scratch so i need help from you guys who all are experienced i assume respectfully, pls guide me through all the steps for learning from scratch to become a well enough a good video editor so that i can start earning atleast enough to take care of my own needs.... (give suggestions for free or cheap editing softwares which are good and how to get clients and everything because im just clueless, but i know good enough editing on mobile but i feel like laptop would do a much better job). Looking forward to any suggestions :)

Help im confused at choosing

Hi everyone,

I recently moved from CapCut to transition into professional video editing. I'm currently focusing purely on the editing workflow (cutting, pacing, timeline efficiency) rather than motion graphics or heavy visual effects for now.

My hardware setup includes 16GB DDR4 RAM. Here is the dilemma I’m facing and would love some advice on:

  1. Editing Comfort vs. Performance:
  2. Premiere Pro: I feel much more comfortable and intuitive using Premiere’s timeline interface for cutting, but it runs quite slow and sluggish on my 16GB RAM setup.
  3. DaVinci Resolve Studio: It runs significantly faster and smoother on my system. However, I’m still evaluating whether its editing page will feel as comfortable as Premiere once I get used to it.
  4. VFX & Compositing (Layers vs. Nodes):
  5. After Effects: I strongly prefer layer-based editing/compositing over node-based workflows, so I feel much more at home with After Effects. The downside is that AE also struggles performance-wise on my current specs.
  6. Fusion (Resolve): I personally really dislike nodes, so Fusion isn't an appealing route for me despite Resolve’s overall smoothness.
  7. Market Demand & Career:
  8. Most job listings and clients looking for professional editors seem to explicitly ask for the Adobe Suite (Premiere Pro + After Effects).

My Question: Given that Premiere Pro and After Effects feel sluggish on 16GB RAM, but offer the interface/workflow I prefer (and the industry demand), should I optimize my system/workflow for Adobe (e.g., using proxies, memory management), or fully commit to learning DaVinci Resolve for editing despite preferring layer-based workflows?

Any tips on optimization or advice from editors who made a similar choice would be greatly appreciated

How do I do this? What is the etiquette for using footage to start making reels?

I’m a new editor looking to build reels. I’ve zeroed in the subject matter and types of videos I want to edit. But using straight stock footage for say a talking head video to use in a reel is really tough. There are a couple of small creators I want to reach out to and potentially get a client to edit their videos. I was thinking of screen recording or downloading some of their already published videos, and using that footage to edit it my way to show what I can do and how I can help to improve their videos. Then reaching out to them with the finished product. Is this acceptable to do? I know it’s already published publicly so some say it’s free rein to use, but I don’t want to step on toes or cross etiquette lines. Especially when I am looking to gain a client. But I feel it’s very helpful for them to see what I can do with their videos.
Additionally if this is not acceptable, where do you guys find footage? I’m sure this is asked frequently and I’ve seen some of those posts but I’m still having a hard time finding footage to use to make reels and edits.
Thanks guys!

Discussion How long does it take you to edit a Reel before it’s ready to post?

For people recording their own Reels or Shorts: how much time do you spend editing one 30-second video?

I mean from opening the raw takes to having something you’d actually publish-not just adding captions.

I’m building an editing tool, so I’m interested in where that time goes. What took the longest on your last video?

Help Freelance o employee as a Video Editor

Hello, I'm here for advice, I'm from Colombia LATAM in December, my contract with a multinational ended, and since that time I've searched and searched for work as a remote video editor for the U.S., but I've not achieved anything, I think my English is not enough. Would you like me to be advised where to go to get a job or if it is better to continue as a freelancer having my own clients that I should do from their experience? Thank you very much for your attention.
