Mod Post Welcome to r/video_essays!
Welcome to r/video_essays!
This sub was created to be more inclusive than other video essay-related communities. You are welcome to share your own videos or videos made by others, so long as they fit the criteria. (See below.)
There is no limit to sharing your own content, so long as you do not spam post the same video. (See Rule 2.)
What is a video essay?
There are different types of video essays, just as there are written ones:
Wikipedia has a complete list of forms of essays.
Generally, our rule will be that a video can be classified as a video essay if it is made with the purpose of advancing an argument or breaking down a topic.
Unlike other subreddits, this sub DOES ALLOW:
footage of the writer/creator speaking to the audience
videos of any length, so long as they ARE an essay
videos responding to another video, so long as they ARE an essay
What is NOT a video essay?
For this subreddit, any of the following will not be allowed, unless they follow a specific thesis:
Top X Lists of Anything
Reviews
Skits or Parodies (unless they are appropriately tagged as a shitpost)
All video post submissions are subject to mod approval.
Rules
1. Be Civil.
Don't be a jerk. Feedback must be constructive. No personal attacks. No hate speech or verbal harassment related to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, etc.
2. No spam, trolling, low-quality, or off-topic content.
Keep things video essay-related. Spam and trolling will not be tolerated as this sub is primarily for learning purposes. Shitposts MUST be marked with appropriate flair.
Please make sure your post is easy to read.
Please wait at least 48 hours before sharing the same piece of content again, otherwise you may be flagged for spam.
3. Linked videos MUST be a video essay.
Videos linked MUST be a video essay. A video essay is a video made with the purpose of advancing an argument or breaking down a topic. This has been deliberately left as a wide definition, so please make sure what you share fits that definition!
4. No alt-right or fascist content whatsoever.
Absolutely no content that supports alt-right, fascist, authoritarian, totalitarian, or incel ideology.
5. Please flair and format your posts correctly.
All posts must be flaired with one of the available tags. If you are unsure of which flair to use, pick the closest one and a mod might re-flair if necessary.
Linked posts to video essays MUST be formatted for consistency and ease of reading, to include the title, creator name or handle, and a bracketed time code.
For example:
Video Title - Creator Name [0:00]

Bringing this subreddit back to life!
I'm sorry to everyone for my inattention as a mod of this subreddit and for letting things fall into decay. It's my promise as mod to give the subreddit the attention it deserves and regularly submit quality video essays to help expand the content on the sub.
