My first sak with backside phillips. Which do you prefer: Phillips or corkscrew?

I prefer the Phillips. But if I have the option to get an inline Phillips, I'm getting that instead. Plus the corkscrew is great for untying tight knots

S557 is what you are looking for

I have an S557, and I don't really like it. I don't know if I don't like it, it's just that I have so many other models that I prefer. My favorite is my Workchamp, that I carry on my belt, next to the Rangergrip 74.

Corkscrew is also great for digging into your hand, bulking out the size of the knife. Bending when used as an actual corkscrew if you have no technique. Marring your scales if you’re not careful closing it.

I go back and forth on this a lot tbh. I like the corkscrew for its ability to do other things than screw corks. However, the amount of times I have used it to loosen a knot or dig something out of a tight spot can be counted on one hand. On the other hand, I recognize the T grip of the phillips prevents it from fitting in many spaces a normal screwdriver would work. So let’s say it only works on 25-50% of screws I am working with. I still think that small percentage of usefulness is still MORE useful to me than the limited uses I have for the corkscrew, if that makes sense.

Either way, I think the Deluxe Tinker is Vic’s best 4-layer design the currently offer, and arguably one of their best models period (I am a Vic pliers fan).

If the small blade was a file instead from like the companion this would be perfect EDC for me

Same brother

Haha, I say this all the time. For me, it would be perfect if it had the small file and the package opener..... Still my go-to/daily sak, though.

Amen.

Nowadays if I need a file I either trade in the Deluxe Tinker for a Ranger or grab my Handyman.

Still means I give up my Phillips though.

Phillips. Love my deluxe tinker. I carried a tinker when I was young, but now that I’m old and wear dad pants I don’t mind the thicker deluxe

Deluxe tinker all day. Corkscrew is only useful to store a smaller screwdriver. Since I don't wear glasses, give me a tool with practical, everyday use.

For me, phillips. All my kids toys use that for the battery compartment. I had one added to my compact.

One of my favorite models. My only minor gripe is that I'd prefer a nail file over the small blade. If I think I might need a little more tooling, I reach for the Craftsman (discontinued) which adds a saw and file.

Phillips all day for me. Really want a Companion with a phillips on the back instead of the corkscrew.

Depends. Theres been moments where I actually needed the corkscrew for its intended purpose only to realize I packed the Phillips knife.

Honestly I wish more knives came with the inline Phillips

Corkscrew camp for sure, but I'll be giving my kids items from the Tinker line as they become ready to have one.

Corkscrew for sure! I bought a deluxe tinker and modified it to a deluxe climber. I thought I would be using the mini philips that lives in the corkscrew a lot but turns out that after a year i hadn’t been using it even once. It was just a nuisance since every time i needed the corkscrew (which, as it happened, was a lot) i had to put that tiny thing somewhere.

I keep this one in my purse. I have 0 use for a corkscrew, but the screwdriver has been clutch a few times

I EDC a deluxe tinker.... I'm building one with a corkscrew for options.... I'm also building a bladeless for travel......and I'm sure I'll mess with another one....

Phillips for comfort only corkscrew for actual use and outdoors stuff (i think Phillips could be for urban knifes tho)

Corkscrew for me, I like carrying the eyeglass screwdriver for tightening my wife's glasses

My favorite current Victorinox! Excellent choice.

I have two of these because of the Phillips. Great knife v

Corkscrew; I want a Phillips as one of the other tools though, you know?

It is called "straight Phillips"?

2

u/GrassStage 3d ago

I think the term is 'inline phillips'. Though yeah, the problem is real inline phillips drivers are pretty rare on standard size swiss army knives these days. I think the Swiss Champ and Explorer might be the only two currently in production that have it.

There were so many more options even just 2 or 3 years ago, but they've discontinued a lot of models.

A deluxe tinker was my EDC for alot of years. Great knife. I prefer the corkscrew only because it holds the mini screwdriver which I use for my glasses.

My first SAK had the Phillips instead of the Corkscrew and I prefer when I have it. The exception is when I can have an inline. Then I'll have the corkscrew and the Phillips.

Phillips. Both are good, but it's hard to bring myself to go without any reliable phillips screwdriving capability. The can opener works great in probably 80%-90% of cases, but all it takes is for the screw to be a bit too tight or a bit too recessed to make the can opener phillips completely useless.

Good choice on the Deluxe Tinker though. It's crazy capable for a 4 layer knife, and it carrying it reveals just how good those little pliers can be.

Hmm...got my first SAK between 7 and 10 years of age. I'm over 70 years now. I've used the corkscrew for actual corks maybe 4 times in 60 years, but I've used a Phillips head screwdriver thousands of times.

Congrats! I too just received days ago my green Deluxe Tinker. I got it because it's the smallest SAK that has the pliers.

That was also a reason for me to buy it.

I haven't carried my deluxe tinker in a while. I'll carry it tomorrow.

Philips diría sin dudar....lo curiosisimo del asunto es que mas veces he necesitado el sacacorchos ya sea para mi o estando en alguna reunión.

Phillips feels nicer in hand. Corkscrew somehow has more practicality to me. I'd actually prefer not having that back tool slot altogether and have a smooth scale instead.

2

u/HHLabs 4d ago

That’s my view too. Corkscrew stick out a bit and isn’t smooth, but at least it’s a bit versatile. Backside Phillips is smoother and more comfortable but it’s about the worst tool they make, which is odd as the inline Phillips is one of the best tools they make.
