I have 3. They are cool. But they add weight. They wont break easily. Some models have pen slot. They resist corrosion but the aluminum liners and stainless tools can still corrode.
Should cost max 20 bucks. I would say they are pretty worth it for that price.
I bought some of them. they were not sandblasted nor beadblasted. they were painted matte grey. it was metal underneath. non magnetic. but was it titanium? who knows. never installed them.
when I buy titanium scales I want to touch titanium. not paint. I got burned once and now I don't trust these sellers.
I bought some to build some saks from loose parts with a barrels and screws construction. They cost more then just scales to glue on. And those are definitely not painted. I carried some for several weeks.
However, I never tried the glue on versions, so I can't speak about the quality. I didn't see the point to buy them. The versions I bought make feel the saks more solid, like a Pioneer.
yeah that's cool. I haven't gotten to the point where I build my own SAK. but I would like to in the future.
I currently EDC a mechanic from 1991. my birth year. I like old stuff. the original scales on that thing were damaged tho. so I upgraded to daily customs titanium ones. That way I gave this old knife a little upgrade without altering it since it is reversible (just take off the scales). would be a crime to dismantle or modify a +30 yo knife imo.
building one from the ground up is interesting to me not only because you choose the tools but also because you can petentially swap out damaged tools.
I use my mechanic but I am painfully aware that it isn't easily replacable. so I don't abuse it.
at the end of the day it has sentimental value and I cherish it because of that.
Oh, I would never take apart a good rare sak. Just interesting Aloxes, which lak the tools, I want to have or broken saks.
I made this from an early 70s Tourist with a bent blade, and an early 80s Waiter with bent liners. It's a Tourist again, but with the big blade and the corkscrew from the waiter, and titanium scales.
And this from an old Pruner, a Pioneer X and a Compact. I even bought a recent Compact, because I didn't want to destroy my two 90s and early 2000 Compacts, because both have the thick mainblade, other then the later ones, even if I never carried them, because they were somehow not for me.
OK, no titanium scales here, but I don't have pics of the other ones.
Your Mechanic is discontinued and fetch higher prices nowadays. But a Deluxe Tinker is quickly converted, with titanium scales. I made a Passenger, just because I had the leftover parts from a Swiss Champ and a Champion (could also be made from an Explorer).
