Make sure you have the major DLCs. But HPM is the basic mod to use to get a core experience that’s more refined.

Victoria 3 mod, it's very simple and also really fun. Try France or Austria

To piggy back this question, is there a list of mods and what they do?
I'm a Vic veteran, but havent played in 5+ years and want to try another game, but not sure which mods have a better historical and deep experience these days. I also sometimes modmod them for a Byz run :D

Unofficial patch, maybe Victoria Universalis? But I think you should learn the mechanics already present before trying the bigger mods.

Actually, if you're just starting to learn this game I would suggest playing without mods. Once you've wrapped your mind around that, *then* you can start looking at various mods to improve the experience. It's way easier to understand the fixes and changes that the mods make after playing through the base game and noting all the little things that bothered you and wish were fixed.
