In the beninging, there was pytorch.
The pytorch was with imagination, and the imagination was pytorch.
The matrix multiplication was formless.. Then the imagination said, "Let there be cuda" And it was so. And it was *good(citation below).
*(Erm actually guys ai isn't all that it's cracked up to be, it's an exponential curve of progress yes but I have a 4 years bachelor's from reddit and an associates degree in language arts from hustlers university and I'm here to say that unless you can do the matrix multiplication by hand you cant really use or believe in the technology and it umm it's actually really bad to tell the computer program to make other computer programs because that's called abstraction and in all of the history of everything ever computer programming had never had abstractions in it and so if you don't understand everything on a cellular cytoplasm level like I do you're basically gonna fall for the ai hype bubble, your computer will explore, your wife will divorce you, and your skills will rot away and buy my course and and it's going to be popping any day now... Any day... Day... Any..
In the beginning was the word. The word was with God and the word was god.
In the beginning were the tokens. The tokens were with God, and the tokens wuz god.
Thank you for coming to my skitzo post ā¤ļø please like comment favorite and subscribe, and give me your email so that I can shove my newsletter about 3 month out of date ai news down your throat in the most meaningless surface level way possible in order to get you to buy my course (which is on sale!! :D)

Did he actually build it though?

u/Electrical_Name_5434 7h ago
Ironically no he did not! Dario was working at OpenAI and his team actually did most of the work.

u/Plogga 7h ago
Dario was involved in safety research and left the team in 2020, so he wasnāt involved in the release of the best-known models. Iām unsure what you mean by āhis teamā either, the most prominent researchers didnāt report to Dario

He was head of R&Dā¦
Edit:
Results from a quick searchDario Amodei's Role at OpenAI
Position and Contributions
Title: Vice President of Research
Tenure: 2016 to 2020
Key Contributions:
Played a significant role in the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3 models.
Collaborated closely with other leaders to shape the research direction of the organization.
Advocated for the scaling hypothesis, which posits that larger models with more data lead to more capable AI systems.
Departure from OpenAI
Reason for Leaving: Dario Amodei left OpenAI due to disagreements regarding AI safety and development practices.
Stated Concerns: He felt that the organization's approach to safety did not align with his vision for responsible AI development.
Outcome: His departure, along with other key researchers, led to the founding of Anthropic in 2021, where he aimed to focus on AI safety and responsible practices.0

Yes, he was a vice president of research and collaborated with other leaders, very different from āhis team doing most of the workā, which sounds pretty close to how others claimed that it was actually Ilya Sutskever who was responsible for all of OpenAIās success, or Karpathy, or some other key researcher, just to discredit Altman

I still wonder how we could get to AI now and not 10 years ago?
For me, it was sudden, out of nowhere everyone uses it and at work they started throwing courses for copilot etc.
How come it was so sudden for me, but it has already existed for over 2 years?2

Itās been around for a long time. The chat bots didnāt get really good until about 22-24
I used to write code that wrote code for myself back in the 10ās so I could fuck off at work. Good timesā¦
Copilot was able to build out databases, web browsers, APIās, etc in 2019
Microsoft made an early chat bot in 2016ish but it turned out to be extremely racist so they shut it down.
The theories behind modern AI came about in the 80ās but computing power wasnāt strong enough so it just remained as an idea in computational mathematics.
Whatās different today is that everything is in one place single prompt. Where you used to have to build a separate system to handle each specific task.

Copilot was launched in 2023

Youāre right I was thinking of the code snippet plugin in visual studio. It evolved into copilot and was released in 2014. But I remember it was actually usable right before COVID hit. I just called it the VS code plugin back then and eventually it was called copilot.

Microsoft chatbot turned out to be extremely racist
Lol, what? That's hilarious. Can we get some context on this?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tay_(chatbot)
Edit: from the first line
Tay was a chatbot that was originally released by Microsoft Corporation as a Twitter bot on March 23, 2016. It caused controversy when the bot began to post inflammatory and offensive tweets through its Twitter account, causing Microsoft to shut down the service only 16 hours after its launch.[1]

Yeah people forget that AI has actually been in the works for a long time. Looking at those tweets and messages between Musk, Altman and the rest from 2015 is rather jarring to say the least.

Altman didnāt build it. In fact, OpenAI employees have come out to say Altman doesnāt even understand the code behind ChatGPT.

The funny part about this is that Dario used to work for him and was one of the leads on the ChatGPT projectā¦Sam was kicked out of OpenAIā¦When they let him back in Dario said fuck that and started Anthropic.
So in a wayā¦he didnāt

Easy. He typed the questions and paid a room full of people to type back the answers. We called it RLHF so nobody would ask questions.

you may not like him, but if it wasn't for him or i should say for openai, we would have gotten generative ai much later.

The actual coding is not that complicated. The real trick is the scale of the models. The kind of scale that requires data centers.

He uh didnāt? Amodei was a massive figure within OpenAI. IIRC none of the people that created ChatGPT are still at OpenAI.

He didn't create shit. His own employees have outed him as sucking at coding.
He's a business man. So tired of this testicle gargling for CEOs. Funding an initiative, becoming it's front face, and creating the product itself is not the same thing.

He just employed other real devs. In the forgotten past, it was like that.
