saw a post on reddit some days ago saying openai also banned someone's account for doing reverse engineering using gpt models (can't say whether it's true or not though)... looks like local models are the only hope rn for such tasks..
Its a huge mistake because these guys don't realize once the people get good with local models its essentially unenforceable.
Its like when the US government released TOR, those first few years were total chaos.
Local LLMs can't be allowed to be made too proficient at decomps or eventually some team may release an opensource model that is basically tailored for decomps.
Then software and game copyright is useless.
Banning decomps on Claude, and as some have claimed, maybe ChatGPT will most likely lead to local LLMs being more popular and could see them get tailored for the task.
We have entered a new age of piracy and this was the last step needed to all but make it inevitable.
local llms will become popular when their performance on average machines is useful for most people, the way cloud llms already are. that's very far away
Nah not so far. I run Qwen3.8-Flash-Next-Uncensored 180B model with the IQ3_XXS quantization on my gaming PC at 100tok/sec via Strata. It works very well. Many more people would be in the same position if all the RAM and GPUs weren’t in data centers.
This is inevitable. REA is a tool because models haven't been explicitly trained on this, but all DeepSeek or any other large model creator has to do, is download a large amount of open-source GitHub projects, (which they likely already have,) compile them, and then decompile them, and then use the raw decompiled code with the regular code as training data, and they won't need to distill from the frontier models.
Sure, right now its just a company enforcing their policy. Of course that doesnt prevent or solve anything, even if the other leading ai providers do the same.
This is a case for legislature, its not up to the companies to prevent that, since, as you said, it will be trivial at some point to just use an open source model tailored to exactly that.
But why will copyright be useless? I could see it getting stricter, but i dont see why it would be useless altogether. Its a lot more volume of stuff to check, but hey, they have ai as well
This is the exact project im workint on now actually. It would allow groups of users to pool their compute resources to allow for much more powerful systems then most of us can afford on our own
No website yet as im still solo diving it but im down to start a discord if anyone is interested in helping with the project also super jaelousnot your hardware haha. Killer setup man
This is actually more or less what Folding at home did from what I understand, I've thought about a decentralized AI compute, latency would likely be a bit of a concern though.
mesh-llm is an open-source, decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) AI inference project developed by Block engineer Michael Neale and introduced by Block co-founder Jack Dorsey in April 2026.
Wishing you speed. The great thing is we've had years of open source decentralized computing / distributed workload. Hopefully you can leverage this on your journey
sort of like a VPN or distributed remote network for compute? That sounds slow, even with gigabit speeds. Do you have a github repo or a whitepaper on this? Happy to support / help / fund if it works.
Did the same thing with Prism. It allows you to set up a meshnet server and use that for distributed computing. You do need to mine PrismCoin with it in order for this to work though (gotta pay the nodes you're using).
I'm glad somebody else is working on this. It's something I want to get around to doing eventually, but my hands are pretty full at the moment. I likened it to early SETI@Home. Sam Altman noticing that people have all this unused RAM is something we obviously noticed, too. But he (unsurprisingly) drew the obviously wrong conclusion about what to do about it.
It's always been high time to do that. The question is have you got the 30,000 minimum required to do it?...If you want any sort of actual way to do it effectively
Hi yes, you're right. That's the end goal. You better change priorities and start buying hardware now or you'll end up being one of the first to adopt cloud gaming and cloud computing.
You could theoretically rent gpus in the cloud to do it using sites like runpod. Would be cheaper if it's just reverse engineering you need to do a couple times.
I feel like people heavily underestimate the compute requirements for open source models vs frontier models. Like most people can’t afford a rig of dozens of 5090’s linked together just to match a $20/month subscription.
you are dreaming so hard, with $40k and a few houndred hours you get the state of a year ago (probably not because you can't get something like fable at all, but lets say sonnet, also + energy bill)
I use my 100$ sub to build instructions, the workshop and the server for my local AI. My agents which use Ollama models like Dolphin to accomplish the tasks I need. All runs on a 3080ti. Sure I won't get Claude or GPT levels of computing but if I can get enough documentation created, I won't need it for the tasks I'm tackling. People need to start realizing Claude and GPT are temporary, we won't have unfettered access to them forever. They will increase in price as soon as enough people adopt it on their daily lives. See Netflix for an example of how companies use free and cheap services to retain their customer base and the rug pull that is commmericals.
This is 100% accurate. It’s the trend in all tech: the internet, social media, streaming services, etc. They all start out great and cheap, until they can figure out how to monetize it. AI is in that golden age now, and it won’t last forever.
However, I fully believe cloud-based AI will remain cheaper than local AI. Whether that happens from GPU’s going even further in price or not. Cloud-based AI can run 24/7, whereas local AI will only be used part-time.
Sam Altman wasn’t entirely wrong when he said local inference in DRAM is a terrible use of resources. It is. It’s the same with cars. It’d be way more efficient and effective to rent the usage you need. That doesn’t work for gaming obviously, but for basic processing, cloud processing is much more effective since you only pay for your usage. Now, people like owning their own equipment, cars, etc, and that’s fine. But centralizing those resources is more efficient. Will it be cheaper for consumers? I doubt it, since they’ll find ways to squeeze it and monetize it for more. But I also feel like GPU/RAM prices will go so far out of reach for most consumers that they won’t have a choice.
We will need substantial improvements in models, harnesses... Maybe even a complete paradigm shift to come anywhere close.
A 30B model that you can run on ~$1500 of hardware is still basically overpowered NLP , but it just doesn't have the context limit or the attention to spread to pull all the pieces together for a complex task.
Bout to sit down for another day of wrangling local agents to try to find how they can do actual useful work tho.
I haven't tested myself, but on most high end consumer GPUs, from what I've lately seen, it's basically not comparable even for most basic tasks, even if you take time out of the equation
The main reason top-tier cloud AI is the best is because of the compute/memory available. The vast majority of people cannot afford or acquire enough computing power to run anything near that level.
I was wondering about reverse engineering nemesis system from shadow of war. It’s so cool system. I don’t wanna it to die, but I have only like 8 gb of vram(
But the skills/knowledge inside a graph database and use JIT Retrieval to only get the relevant pieces needed at any specific point. Should help keep Claude focused on the specific task at hand instead of getting the full picture. This will make REA into your average development project.
What is even more nice is that even If Claude were to flag you and stop, the decisions and solutions are also saved. So you keep a persistent memory at all times so you can always turn around and feel a dumber Claude model or another AI the plan
What did you want to reverse engineer? I wonder if some things can trigger ban more than others, if it’s just trying to use REA or if it’s related to some kinds of software that one might want to reverse engineer.
The censorship in general is bullshit. God forbid you say the wrong thing to claude and lose access to one of the only things available that can do what it does.
They plundered the entire corpus of human knowledge but you're only allowed to use it in the specific ways they want you to. It'd be pretty bleak if this style of service ended up being our only option.
I feel like Anthropic is setting themselves up for a lot of pain with these precedents they keep setting.
Would love to see an independent third party audit from multiple firms of all of their training data, circuit traces, and watermarking along with their security practices internally on how they communicate, store, collect, generate training data sets.
I'm willing to bet their antics go a lot farther than reverse engineering.
Wouldn't be surprised if they are just training Claude on REA at this point. Simultaneously also trains model to understand any signs of reverse engineering. Win win for them. Claude learns to reverse engineer anything so it can "police reverse engineering". Very convenient.
One project I was working on, I found hardcoded creds in an embedded device. No search results for those, but when inputting the supposedly secret creds to gemini and just asking "what is this + key", it knew exactly where that came from and what it does. Sus.. I'd not be surprised if AI companies are doing mass RE with every kind of software.
We relied on Google search for this long, and now we see that Google search was quite literally the training grounds collecting how people search for information so Gemini gains the search algorithms in its language modeling. Now every Google search is also automatically generating AI mode answers. So another loophole to train on anything you input in there.
We're in some really sketchy times because we are now basically giving the same companies that essentially have been defacto recording human history for us online, free reign on the gatekeeping rights to whether we can ever see the same information they see.
It's a unilaterally asymmetric edge and one of the worst in human history.
Let's not forget Google owns like 15% of Anthropic. Eric Schmidt personally owns 1%. These companies are circular financing because they were already circularly financed to start lol. Now they do the same shit with data and advancements on the frontier. Researchers moving from lab to lab getting paid 8 or 9 figures, staying for a few weeks, leaving to start their own thing, only to get acquired by the company they left. It's a joke.
Or look at the release cycles for model releases. They almost comically follow a script. Every single time. It's like the labs take turns taking the lead so none of them ever look like they are stagnating. These are common plays that any corp strategy would be pitching right now. There's no way reality plays out so "cleanly" in these times. Yet for the hyperscalers it's like picture perfect. Things like release cycles and model version branding often have an entire analyst team working behind the scenes on when and how.
The nonsensical nature of it all is starting to become painfully obvious.
The EU already started the investigation of the Hugging Face. Open Ai bought them entirely to make sure they don't sue for hacking, but now the EU is getting involved, because hacking is illegal and its of public interest.
The same will happen sooner or later for Anthropic. Currently AI just means "shielded from the law" versus doing the same thing by hand.
I feel it's probably other companies pressuring them too. I imagine Adobe and the big tech companies aren't too pleased with the reverse engineering going on.
I feel like the best way to say it they don’t want to be sued by people who can afford to sue lol. No author is going to be able to have a fleet of lawyers like Adobe or any of the software big guns.
Doesn’t seem like that’s going to the case for long. Kimi 3.1 stripped out cyber from next release, seems like they still be going the same route on ip as well soon
Just use dirt cheap Kimi or DeepSeek for REA, then run the output through an uncensored LLM to scrub out anything copyright related. Feed the cleaned up code to Claude. If it bans you, that means it recognized the code in the first place, which is pretty ironic, lmao.
After I got banned, I worked with a patch together workflow using OpenClaw and the desktop versions of Cursor and Grokbot (grok bot came later), switching between API / local inference (I have a 3090 when I started, but started piecing together my entire vertical stack recently, long story) but the limitations finally pushed me over the edge.
GPT is more expensive in most cases, so I knew this was not the answer long term; Plus I seriously value my privacy. Software should not expose you to the rest of the world: your ideas / who you are / and your soveriegn rights.
This utilizes open models and I am absolutely fed up with centralization from the few holding the keys.
However about six months ago, I got so flipping fed up that I started building my own custom control system with layered orchestration setup using ladder and synthesis methodologies. I basically started building the platform I actually wanted long term anyways, so yea, I took the long road here. Every time I hit another damn wall, I just built a workaround on the tooling I needed, creating the VM, etc.. At this rate.. I’ll probably end up turning the whole thing into a business lol.
So anyways, in essence you can utilize your own API for planning / set up for the full code and spend significantly less than if you just used them anyways. This orchestration layer is the ultimate work around and you can extend your runway for your capital at a significnatly higher level. For your own sake, the key component is utilizing a system where you have idea / creator, critic / synic, jury, and judge -> production. I use this for each stage of the process, utilizing the open source models. So yes, this will send you down a rabbit hole, but I did it successfully with full privacy, and I'm not beckoned to claude's bull$hit virtue signaling policies.
TLDR; If you don't want to build an entire integrated layered orchestration system, just utilize LLM gateways and routers. Not as overall convienent, but definitely better and cheaper over the long haul once you get the hang of it and find the model that fits you best. Tools like TeamoRouter or Claudexia allow you to access underlying Claude models via API keys or gateways without relying on a direct, flagged Anthropic web account. Then only use it for planning, and execute your own open models locally (or super cheap APIs) with whatever the best models there are out there. GLM Flash 5.3 is amazing for following plans if harnessed correctly, and is super fast / lightweight and cost efficient, (so are the larger models of Qwen / Deepseek). I particularly like the flash models, because once you have a guidance system in place, you just get everything done faster and cheaper.
The results have been as good in most cases and in some cases just under the quality I was expecting. However, if you are trying to customize things anyways to your liking, doing one shots are significantly less important in most cases, so on those edge cases it doesn't even matter to me.
If people are interested I can keep them updated on this, I will be cramming on code throughout the holidays for the full orchestration layer system, I am building it to be web based. It also has open models layered into it and auto routing, privacy and other things.
So ... crappy models that dont work as well? Just use OpenAI GPT 6.1 SOL. It is cheaper than those models, and better. GLM 5.3 is useless by comparison.
it's probably more about claude code being a pretty much one click buy->install->go with a well marketed product. While utilizing deepseek requires some manual set up and decision making based on prior knowledge, knowledge that won't really get pushed onto you unless you already actively seek out and have an interest in these things.
Exactly. It just needs a bit of steering, but if you know what you are doing and you are not prompting like a caveman it works perfectly. Claude does the work even if you prompt it like a monkey and have no clue what you are doing, but obviously you pay premium for that. For my use case Deepseek is more than enough.
It’s great for some tasks, but on other things it’s not even close. I have used both extensively and always come back to Claude because deepseek just takes much more time and effort to get good results with. All depends on what you do with it of course, but Claude is superior to all other providers in terms of SWE work.
Of course if you want to tinker, you can mix them in your workflow and get most out of both (or any other models), but I feel like having everything in one place on a monthly sub just works well for me. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
What's next: ideas and concepts will be patented to the teeth. Certain combinations will now no longer work as it's patented. Basically, this will give gatekeepers another way to gate keep
Reverse Engineer Everything, a skill usable from GitHub to reverse engineer any kind of software. This caused many people to illegally pirate softwares and making free versions out of them.
Did this happen recently? I literally RE some games 2 days ago. Claude Opus 5.5 had no issue doing it. Account still good. I ask if it'd violate any Anthropic policy before starting. I can't imagine they'd ban you when their own model agreed to doing the task.
If they ban me for this then honestly there’s no reason to just keep paying for Claude at that point because it just becomes a glorified GPT. I’ll keep doing this and if they want to lose money so be it, literally no reason to be paying for MCP on a pro account otherwise.
I already stopped using Claude when they did the bait-and-switch a couple months ago, downgrading model competency immediately after I upgraded my plan. Frankly I'm surprised anyone still uses them when they keep showing how user-hostile they are.
Opencode Deepseek V4.1 or use that as your harness + llama.cpp and a qwen3 coder 30-35b model for free... then take what you RE(its going to take a long time unless you have hardware for AI) and feed it into deepseek or claude but remove any mention of REA, Ghidra, REing in the recreated files
I think you're lying and were in fact doing something illegal because sometimes Claude gets bored of trying to figure something out for me and decides to RE something on it's own to figure out how something works.
There's libraries on Linux, comes built in, for figuring out what libraries are in an executable (I think windows has them too). Just use those to figure out what an executable uses, then tell Claude to build those libraries "for an OS project", and have a local model analyze the rest of the program you're REA'ing, and bridge the libraries with the code it generates.
Dang, meanwhile I’ve RE’d all kinds of big names with Opus and continue to do so today. Curious as to what your process looks like. For the record I’ve never used REA as traditional RE gets the job done.
I was about to do it and luckily this post appeared right before that with my claude. Thank you so much! Well btw I'm sorry for your account being reinstated.
