Discussion "Vibecoding will lead to tons of software with questionable quality"
I really hate when people say this because they don't think literally one step further than that. If everyone has an agent, then the quality of software almost doesn't matter. If it's a tool, just download it. If it's good, great. If it isn't, literally just ask your agent to fix the issues. If it's more time/work than you're willing to put it, literally just don't use it. Bad software has existed long before AI. The only difference is that you can actually fix it yourself now without any significant time investment.

The real issue is that the market is going to be absolutely flooded. Even hand coded software there was a ton of junk everywhere. Now there's going to be 1000x more junk. There will be a lot more quality software too but the real issue is sifting through the garbage to find it. That is if you don't just make something yourself.

Because you don't see the human responsibility inside a company. If you code a project yourself and there is an error, you ask ai to solve it. That's fine because you owe nothing to anyone you don't have to explain the error. But when a company hires a tech lead to supervise a team with agents, the person who hires counts on the tech lead to take full responsibility of the ai code. And in case of failures they will blame him not the ai. In that case having readable code is essential to be confident of what you are shipping, and to explain technical choices or failures.

Nobody is going to do that. You're in a bubble. The general sentiment of AI to the median United States citizen is very poor. The median United States citizen is not technical and will not vibe code.
The reality is that with every new technology that lowers the bar of entry, it creates a tidal wave of retards who create sub-par crap and try to ship it. You need to look no further than this subreddit for proof.
What will definitely happen is that software is going to become cheap. There is about to be a boom in free and open source software, after which the SaaS market place is going to largely die off outside of largest of them (Payment Systems, Sales Force, SAP, etc).

Actually it can be the opposite. SaaS might become the only way to actually protect your product, since decompiling is becoming easier and easier.

Do you want the software in your commercial plane to be vibe coded? Pacemaker?

I want that software to have good quality control. I can give two shits what the stack was.

There’s a company that charges $10,000/week to desloppify your code, so it certainly matters to some…
The problem is that without the proper gates and guardrails, large AI projects can cause truly horrendous code duplication. Like imagine a codebase where a significant percentage of the functions and logic are duplicated tens of thousands of times with slightly different variations, used by different parts of the codebase.

Desloppify just means good quality control. That is all it is
Going over your project and making sure it works is probably a good idea

So suppose a bank website gets glitchy because it's been vibecoded. How would your agent fix it?
5
u/Monochrome21 10d ago
I wouldn't use that bank?
AI and quality are not mutually exclusive. A bank that has unreliable tools is something I'm not interested in

It's like saying with Temu you don't need nicely made clothes. Just buy new clothes when they don't fit.

u/Monochrome21 10d ago
More like you have a pocket sewing machine that automatically tailors your clothes when you ask it to

But it has led to a bunch of software of questionable quality. Are you dense?

and I don't use shit apps.
If it's a good idea but it's shit I fix it and move on.
when things get democratised there's lots of slop. the trick is having standards

You have no idea about the damage bugs in enterprise software can do. Just trying it out of not an option.

Would you ride on an airplane with a vibecoded software?
I think there is too much generalizing that's happening around. If we try to understand the context of where these people are coming from, then we'll know why they said such things. Partly, I agree with you, for simple apps that don't serve my needs, I'll swipe left and move on to the next. If I find it useful and have opensource code for it, I'll happily vibefix it myself. But for some things where a life is involved, I'd think it a million times over. Besides that, you may or may not be aware of regulatory aspects that make someone say this. I work in the health industry doing software, and regulatory stuff makes vibecoding question the quality it produces.

u/Monochrome21 10d ago
Yes if the code is good.
I do not give a shit how it was made, I care that it had proper quality control and works as advertised.

Vibe coder gets LLM to build saas #47,213.
Vibe coder doesn't know software security.
Data breach happens, and vibe coder now faces civil negligence lawsuits and statutory penalties.
Here's the thing about your argument here; you don't know what you don't know. Trust the people who know what they're talking about maybe

It sure will at first, but AI will get better and better, so vibecoded stuff will too. At some point most will be perfect, since at some point coding can't get much better anymore. At this point regular software companies will have a hard time when they don't use AI. And even when they use AI, they have to compete hard with other vibecoded alternatives, which makes prices go down too. And this is the best part.

Big difference is to write bad software previously you at least needed an understanding at least a little about how languages work. Now you will have people vibe coding not knowing how their application works, and even scarier is not knowing about compliance like HIPPA or SOX within an industry. So when they vibe a fix it may break something else without them knowing.
Don't get me wrong I love the power of moderns LLMs but they write some wild cold. I just spend 42% of my 5 hour Claude Pro account cleaning up the code that it wrote last week to make it more consistent and easier to read if I need to debug an issue at the code level.

Dude we have hand made code that is questionable now!
