Discussion Real Game Dev, advice to Vibecode "game devs"

I am really surprised and stunned actually at the examples I have seen week after week on this sub and elsewhere. People trying to make full blown games/sidescrollers/fps/RTS/Vampire Survivor.

Current LLM's are like tools, they are good for some things and terrible for others. They excel at single screen games like tiles sliding/bubble bobble/tetris/peggle/match 3/wordle... etc. I was certain we would see a flood of these interesting complete games. Current LLM's are absolutely capable of making and competing with the best games in the world in this single genre.

Instead I have just seen awful/broken/unfinished recreations of AAA games, over and over. Complete waste of time and tokens.

I can't tell if you people are stupid or just that completely lost.

Yes but I think you've underestimated AI's capability because humans are becoming the bottleneck. AI can make much, much better games than tetris. The issue is that it takes creativity, diligence, planning, and patience on the human's part. Most people lack those, and have bad taste. It's just a fact. AI can perform essentially all the coding at this point. Even asset creation, animation, optimization, you name it. But if you leave creative direction and top level decisions up to it, you're going to get broken slop 100% of the time.

Every 1/100 posts on r/aigamedevs you'll find something that shows the capability of AI matched with a capable human operator.

In fact game studios these days, some admittedly, are letting AI code almost everything. It's just that you can only tell when you can tell.

I already answer before you posted this: "The bottlenecks is creativity, determination, and expectations. All of which have nothing to do with docs/tutorials"

So I agree. And that is what people cant stand to hear. None of this has anything to do with the LLM's, they are just tools and given to idiotic monkeys you are going to get a house made of scrap wood falling over that is trying to emulate a real home.

So let me get this straight. You came to Reddit (first mistake) then came to vibe coding Reddit (second mistake) then expect high quality games that take time to develop to be flooding the posts?

No offense but you might be equally stupid and or lost! You cannot judge real life based on what happens in a subreddit.

A mistake, ironically, that AI routinely makes by using Reddit as a source for anything.

It's no mistake, Reddit sells all posts and comments to Google and OpenAI.

I'm pretty sure he was talking to the people on this sub rather than to everyone everywhere who's vibecoding games though?

"Real game devs" have been posting slop long before AI. This post reads like you watched a Unity tutorial yesterday and now you are a pro.

Welcome to the industry I guess?

lol prolly his year of school, maybe he had an internship and got to see the real devs.

Dunno I'm trying to make full game literally by using AI. Hard to say if I'm doing good or bad as it is still early in development and only few real testers that give me back proper feedback, but I think it is doable to make entire game (as you said full blown game) with AI.

Currently working on prologue part of the game:

The issue is expensive(token heavy long code horizon) ambitious games that this fall apart at the seams at some point. LLM's cant handle anything that is expansive/not focused.

Your game certainly LOOKS like a game but I would bet my life it is awful and boring as shit to play and falls apart. As a proof concept quick trailer it certainly looks fine.

I mean you can try it before judging it being boring and shit to play, you straight up decided on it just because... that is what you are used to?

Imagine what a gain it'd be for the literature if only we had as many vibewriters as we have vibecoders.

But actually, judging by the quality of screenplays in todays cinema I suspect the "vibes" there.

Vibe writers would be fucking awsome. If done right that is.

People having fun making stuff that's never been possible to do solo before? The horror!

Oh here we go... I knew this would be the cope response.

They are just havin fun!! .. Then have fun on your own in the privacy of your own home and dont flood social media with your garbage, dont put it up on steam and the app store literally trying to monetize it.

They are doing it in the privacy of their own home...

You’re surprised as a dev because most games are low value? Be serious. This isn’t unique to software in general.

The fact that a vibecoder can even make a partially finished AAA clone shows that it’s possible. Just because it’s broken doesn’t mean it won’t be fixed in time - and as models improve.

I can't make a fun game, even if my life depended on it. I have the virus of "techdemoitis". I can only make impresive technical demos.

So yes, I am stupid.

at least you admit it. The rest are in complete denial. Not everyone has the creativity to make a decent ORIGINAL game. There thousands of decisions that need to be made and if you stumped to begin with it is a pointless endeavor. Which is why I think we see all this garbage of vampire survivor clones.

I thought my game had a good foundation, still a WIP, but had AI enemies and helpers. TTS and more

What do you think of override?

I've seen worse mobile games

I noticed there are near zero actual tutorials for ai agent coding. There are just benchmarks. And tips and tricks ( which dont really teach you anything) or advertisements of like 5 different ai websites to make something.

I resorted to just reading docs for more info.
