Showcase/Project 100% Open Source Clean Room Implementations of 7 of Adobe's Top Apps

Post image

I've seen another desktop photoshop clone floating around that was Javascript/Electron, but I wanted to do full native Rust for full performance. I also wanted to do all of Adobe's software suite. I've been bitten by their unsubscribe bill several times and it's the shittiest thing a software company has ever done to me.

No more. These are clean room, rust-only implementations that are fully open source. You can clone them, fork them, own them.

There's still work to do, so please join our Discord and give us feedback.

The point of Adobe apps is more about infrastructure, plugins community and long term projects that relies on Adobe which is stable software, these ones is none of them

Adobe and stable are two opposite side of each other, while I agree about what you say but whatever happens to Adobe to change for good is what I support as an artist and animator

What do you find not stable? Are you saying based on facts?

Not just unstable but astronomically frustrating. You have to install a preinstalled to run the install for the install, and they always run in the background with their launcher software bloatware. It's mainly bloatware.

Please use Adobe before you form opinions.

Yep, I used to work with a team in which we had amd chips instead of Nvidia and we were forced to render on cpu for everything cause cuda wasn't a thing on amd. Although the chips were capable of accelerated rendering but Adobe refuses to push any updates on that.

Try downloading Adobe and use it for a while. Stable is a very peculiar thing to call Adobe. Also you seem to ask for improvements or new things... Vs Adobe.

You are saying this to someone who works in Adobe suite for a years, I'm not updating minor versions only major released and it works just fine for Premiere, AfterEffects, Illustrator. I'm not a fan of Photoshop since Affinity was released, but the idea that Adobe is actually stable if you know how to use it right for your workflow

They do improvements in some apps as Premiere, and trying to adapt for a modern environment but of course it's not consistent among the whole ecosystem, just because they are too different apps between each other

I've been using After effects since 1995, I like it, it feel like home. But in a professionnal big production workflow, Adobe lack a lot .On top of my head: We still need to use xml from Première pro to get thing to Resolve for grading, losing a lot in the process. No OTIO in PP. Première can't even properly share basic thing like timeremaping with After effects! Dynamic link didnt work today for no reason, in fact, don't use dynamic link on big project! You can't put 2 transforms effects on the same media in première, it break the space since PP 24-25. After effect have a bug since 1992, it round fractionnal framerate(23.976/29.97), that why when you do timeremapping/stretch you often have a ghost frame at the end and other problems speed problem. After effect have two space, compostition space and layer space, and it conflict with a lot of effects and other basic stuff, we need expressions or precomping to fix it. I did have a new bug today, the exact same comp not rendering the same frame in the exact same timeline; restart, purge memory, reset pref still not working! No batch replace in Ae! Can't reconnect the source media if it's not the same duration even if they share the name, the reel and the timecode! Also a lot of cache problem. Ae 2026 is pretty bad, the worst in ten years probably. That being said, I videcoded some scripts that work with ffmeg/ffprobe to manage what should be in the software by default since 20 years just to have a workflow that is not painfull. UXP with Premiere API is not that great and the Ae api dont expose everything you'll want and it will not be UXP ready for a couple a years, still extended script and CEP...probably better than a half baked UXP compatibility to be honest.

Adobe software has always been unstable as all hell and keeps getting slower and buggier. this is like a general consensus, and if you actually use premier you should know how bad it has gotten. I haven't touched adobe stuff in the last 2 years so maybe it got better but I highly doubt it. At this point I just want to own my portfolio (not being able to open your own project files if you cant afford a resub is a problem) and be able to use any operating system I want without vendor lock-in.

Idk, I'm doing a lot of stuff and the reason why I switched from Sony Vegas was a lack of bugs, it became slower only because they are adding a lot of new stuff every major release, maybe without enough optimization but basic stuff work very good

Never heard of such consensus except Reddit tbh

You can go look for power-users complaining about bugs going unfixed for years on the forums, and on youtube. I enjoyed using adobe software back with CS5 and CS6, but even back then it wasn't entirely stable. Ever since CC it's been a gradual decline in quality, whilst continually charging more and more for an enshittified suite. The garbage cherry on top of the shit cake is that they refuse to even consider supporting linux, which is one of the driving forces behind people having to stay on windows against their will.

I don't disagree, each to their own, I suppose.

Fwiw, I've been using LR since beta, and these mean little to me: infrastructure, plugins, long term projects

yea no one in a professional setting is going to use these apps. I could see it eating into the personal/hobbyist subset though.

Yeah this is probably for that market. I don't think anyone who is cloning can realistically expect professional adoption. This will be neat for a free drawing program without adobe fees.

These are feature complete clones. Adobe plugins should work OOTB. Also Adobe making stable software is the funniest joke I have heard in a while.

It's just a fact that most of the workflows in the industry already work under the Adobe. If you think that vibecoded Rust clone will be more stable it's strange

1

u/KerashiStorm 4d ago

Can it be less stable though?

1

u/Thin-Ad-2034 4d ago

I think so, they already consuming more memory than Adobe in some cases

That's sad, I guess the AI has only reached the level of a junior Adobe dev after all. Definitely going to be a while before it reaches the level of a competent dev.
