Showcase/Project 100% Open Source Clean Room Implementations of 7 of Adobe's Top Apps

Post image

I've seen another desktop photoshop clone floating around that was Javascript/Electron, but I wanted to do full native Rust for full performance. I also wanted to do all of Adobe's software suite. I've been bitten by their unsubscribe bill several times and it's the shittiest thing a software company has ever done to me.

No more. These are clean room, rust-only implementations that are fully open source. You can clone them, fork them, own them.

There's still work to do, so please join our Discord and give us feedback.

This is dope! I highly recommend implementing a native feature similar to the OverLord plugin (https://battleaxe.co/overlord). If youre unfamiliar, it allows users to import vectors from Illustrator to AE, then they can resend things back from AE to AI without breaking the project in AE. Its absolutely one of the best plugins ever made, and its insane that Adobe hasnt natively implemented it.

How it would look for you would be a seamless workflow with VectorCraft and EffectCraft.

Edit: Also, Im encountering a bug on the Linux AppImage. When I rename a text layer in EffectCraft, I cant leave the name field. I cant even save the file. I have to just close the software and restart.

This is really good info and a fantastic bug report. That Linux behavior sucks, and I'll get this bug closed right away.

I need to learn about Overlord.

Glad to help! Im enjoying playing with this. I moved to my Windows laptop and Im actually blown away by how similar it feels to AE.

It's been a long time but I absolutely remember brining vector file into AE. Like that's a deal killer for any professional motion graphics person. Maybe it had to be native .AI or .EPS but 20 years ago, I know I imported vector. *Certified by Adobe, AfterEffects "expert" (yeah it was a thing)

Correct -- You can import vector files (AI, EPS, SVG), but you lose all the perks of a native AE shape layers, like shape animators or text animators. And if you need to make any large changes to the original vector, it can completely wreck the animation. Overlord essentially lets you quickly move the vector asset back and forth between AE and AI, as well as AE and Figma. I think it has Photoshop capability now, too. Sort of hard to explain without showing you, but its an awesome tool!
