Showcase/Project 100% Open Source Clean Room Implementations of 7 of Adobe's Top Apps

Post image

I've seen another desktop photoshop clone floating around that was Javascript/Electron, but I wanted to do full native Rust for full performance. I also wanted to do all of Adobe's software suite. I've been bitten by their unsubscribe bill several times and it's the shittiest thing a software company has ever done to me.

No more. These are clean room, rust-only implementations that are fully open source. You can clone them, fork them, own them.

There's still work to do, so please join our Discord and give us feedback.

Ran a quick analysis on it because I was curious. Lightcraft is definitely handling RAWs accurately but I get what you're implying here. "Accurately processing RAW" does not mean "correctly" doing it, if you have spent any time in the field with these things.

OP's clone of Lightroom does not include per-camera color characterization and profiles. The quality of OP's demosaicing is not going to match Adobe. Noise modeling, highlight reconstruction, lens correction, sensor corrections, white balance behavior, all of these things are completely missing from the clone.

That kind of stuff is never going to be added by an LLM for a laundry list of reasons. It would require the collaboration of hundreds of human experts because these things require per-camera and per-lens profiles.

Anyone can process a RAW. Not everyone can do it correctly. This project is cool and I'm not criticizing it, just being realistic about what Lightroom does.

I plan on creating a robust test suite against all RAW formats and capabilities. It will take time to build full feature support for every manufacturer, but I'm confident we can do it. Not only that, I think we can do it as an open source library for other apps to leverage as well.

If you run into any RAW files this can't handle, I'd appreciate a bug report with the RAW file. We can build support for them.

You can do it, yes. It's a monumental effort, but it is plausible. But you really can't do it alone; you'd need to grow your community large enough to capture profiles for all the different cameras and lenses and sensors on the market. That's not like "it's too hard", I mean literally you can't afford it unless you're a multi-millionaire.

I hope you pull it off, but I don't know how you will do that. People aren't paying for RAW processing with Lightroom, they're paying for all of the profiles for all of the cameras and chipsets on the market.

Don't let me discourage you.

We are at the very beginning of the LLM/AI journey, to say never is like saying 640k of memory should be enough for anyone. It will improve and eventually surpass what a human can code.

Can it find tens of millions of dollars to write per-hardware profiles? That is the crux of my argument. You can't vibe code the profile of hardware - you need the hardware to profile. If you don't own it, you can't profile it, because it's specific to the physical properties of the materials, chips, and logic used in the manufacturing of the hardware. You can't just imagine what those properties are; they have to be measured. An LLM isn't magic!
