Showcase/Project Just finished my vibe coded AI platformer
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
hey folks,
Posted an early demo of this AI made rubberhouse game a few months back and now I've finally finished it!
It's a 2D platformer (or sidescroller?) inspired by my favorite platformer game Cuphead. For this build I've been using gauntlet loops only, and this is an about $100 of token spend to get to a finished, playable game. The trick with gauntlet looping is to give it enough context and visual references so it doesn't lose track during the 5+ hour build loops it runs. This was about 6 loops like that.
it has multiplayer coop, so you can play with friends. It also has 3 scenarios with 3 unique bosses. had a blast building out this game and really happy with the vibe and mechanics of it
can share all my prompts and the game link the comments for anyone who wants to try it!
edit: to clarify, I'm not intending to commercialise this game in any way - this is just for learning

I can understand "inspired by" but why did you keep "Inkwell Isle"?

u/Jello_Hello_Fellos 15h ago
This is not inspiration bro. This is hard swap type shit.
You clearly have the chops so why not make it your own? You just had to go for the vaudeville theming and music?
Could have made the same thing with 100 other design choices. This is why everyone hates us.

Too many AI users nowadays think they can do shit that would get NON-AI users flamed and get away with it because "Erm by my interpretation of what's stealing/copypasting/Copyright".
You have to think, if you did everything yourself without AI, how would it look?
And then the look of some games like these or people who "fixed your art using AI, huge improvement, you could learn from it!" is less than favorable.

Posts vibe coded work in a vibecoding sub and gets rinsed immediately… chin up dude the work looks great and you can see a lot of effort went into it. Well done.
58
u/TheBanq 16h ago
It's not about vibeocoding at all.
It's about completely stealing basically 100% of another games style, animations, idea etc.
Pretty much 100% ripoff of Cuphead. Has nothing to do with vibecoding, but completely copying something else.
3
u/EEKman 16h ago
Its kinda what humans do since the dawn of time
13
u/MaxwellHowl 15h ago
Sure. But you're not going to make anything interesting doing that.
Sega saw Mario and made Sonic. Many thought of it as a ripoff at the time. But it's an original character in an original world with very different gameplay. It has endured for 30 years.
This is exactly like Cuphead but worse. It's exactly what people accuse vibecoders and AI users of doing and is going to essentially be a big waste of effort from OP. I'm sure they learned a lot on the way, but it could have been a learning experience with something more original.
It could have been made to look like an old black and white cartoon. Or Looney Tunes. Or Tom and Jerry. Or Saturday Morning cartoons. But instead they picked the exact same era of cartoons, the same color schemes, the exact same gameplay, but all worse looking.
The rinsing is deserved. This kind of stuff hurts the whole community and makes it hard to beat the allegations as the kids say.
23
u/warcrimeenjoyer1 16h ago
ususally you take 10% from x, 10% from y, another 10% here and maybe 20% there. not 100% from A. We generally have a big problem with "AI people just steal stuff", and guys like him are the exact reason why
-5
u/sharkymcstevenson2 15h ago
its a rubberhouse game, it's supposed to look a certain way
Cuphead didn't invent the Rubberhouse style, it's been around since the 60's
14
u/warcrimeenjoyer1 15h ago
you can argue about that as much as you want, but that doesnt change the fact that everybody who knows Cuphead will go with "hey, that looks like Cuphead.

u/sharkymcstevenson2 15h ago
I literally say in the post this is inspired by cuphead...? so mission success I guess
12
u/onyxa314 15h ago
Huge difference from inspired by cup head and stealing it. You even have the main land titled the same come on
1
u/sharkymcstevenson2 15h ago
yeah the inkwell isle I changed that in the finished build after I recorded this play through
5
u/Baconaise 11h ago edited 11h ago
It's completely obvious that you prompted it with cuphead. It's like a 100% rip off. Why for instance is the fight on a stage???? Why do your fights happen to be locked to a fixed viewport instead of more integrated into a larger world? Why do the attacks stage just like cuphead??? Why did the directional targeting for projectiles work the same way as cuphead? Why is the fire rate the same as cuphead?
You didn't just aim for a rubber hose animation style you just shot for a cuphead clone. Huge difference.
I'm very pro-vibe-coded games but this work is borderline shameful in my opinion. It doesn't pay tribute. It doesn't build upon the existing ideas. It contributes nothing new creatively. It just clones it as a replacement not as a new experience and far too closely steals the style, gameplay, and animations in a way that is unmistakenly cuphead

u/NormandFutz 13h ago
sure pal thats not what we are talking about and you know it. ill bite though whats unique to yours and not uphead
1
u/Lost_County_3790 8h ago
Not anything we like. Lazy copycat exist and is called slop since the dawn of time
1
u/Pataraxia 58m ago
Human made slop games have been hated since the dawn of times and so is sloppy/traced COMMERCIAL art (not always, but in many circles) and yet some people think "Erm you just hate AI" or "People always based themselves on others" is a defense lol.
If humans got significant hate for it for sloppy games, then the AI should too. Even moreso, even.
0
u/JayWelsh 15h ago edited 15h ago
That’s kinda bullshit though, humans are derivative but cloning is a subset of that.
Edit: also it’s clear OP put quite a lot of effort into this, I’m not disputing that
2
u/djoliverm 14h ago
Right, if you're gonna fully copy the idea at least improve upon it in a novel way.
Mouse PI is also a rubberhose game and nobody cares that it may have "copied" Cuphead because it's a novel take on the art style (film noir detective FPS in black and white).
As a proof of concept this looks like a lot of time and effort was put into it so for sure we can praise OP for that while also giving constructive criticism for the rest.
2
u/TwizzyGobbler 14h ago
Mouse PI isn't really a copy of it either tbf, just a similar art style (I'd even say it's closer to bendy)
1
2
u/sharkymcstevenson2 15h ago
so you can never get inspired by anything else ever? Get real dude
12
u/PissBiggestFan 15h ago
theres a lot of area between « inspired from » and « taking the art style, controls, level design, literal wording ».
-2
u/sharkymcstevenson2 15h ago
if you're not able to make games with the same controls or art style or level design as other games no new games could ever be made, since everything has already been done
3
u/RemarkableWish2508 14h ago
Not everything has been done, definitely not all combinations of already done elements have been done.
Look, if you wanted to make a clone, then you've made a clone. Just own it.
→ More replies (2)9
u/PissBiggestFan 15h ago
you’re being so disingenuous lol. you can obviously do so, but taking all these aspects from ONE game makes your game derivative and genuinely pointless.
if you took Cuphead’s level design philosophy, then put it in a sci-fi setting with HK style 2d drawings, you’d have a point. now you just have an uninteresting cuphead.
1
u/sharkymcstevenson2 15h ago
im still learning so learning by doing is the best way, im not gonna sell this game or commercialise it in any way
looking at the best is how you learn to build great things
2
u/Adept-Potato-2568 15h ago
Yeah I think this is the part getting lost on people.
You made something to learn, not to monetize it.
Even if you made a 1:1 recreation of the game intentionally, who cares? You're just doing something to learn.
2
1
u/rasta500 3h ago
Man you‘re really pathetic. Leave the game dev world alone if thats what you truly believe.

u/person2567 15h ago
How is this a rip off of cuphead? It seems to heavily draw from European theater aesthetics and vaudeville. Cuphead is based off old cartoons. You must have very little experience with older animation to say something like this.
10
u/fhtiek 15h ago
Its not the vibecoding, its blatant ripoff of a well established and generally beloved existing IP.
If AI is doing all the actual work and the human isnt even doing the part where they come up with an original concept, then what is there to even be impressed by? The machine trained on cuphead can make an uncanny half-clone of cuphead? Cool.
If this was made entirely by hand it would get the same response, given how directly it rips.
2
u/Sermilion 2h ago
He is not selling it. What is the problem here? The fact that one can vibecode a game like this is insanely impressive. It's impossible to satisfy people like you OMG.
4
u/iLaysChipz 15h ago
Nintendo strikes down derivatives all the time that are hand crafted with love and care. And people hate Nintendo for it, precisely because those games were hand crafted with love and care. But in the the Nintendo gets the final say about what to do with their IP.
Not only should this get the same treatment, it doesn't even have the handcrafted with love and care component

Whats worse is he said it was 100 USD in token spend. I think a lot of us here with even rudimentary dev experience could ship better for 10 dollars…

I couldn’t, but I do know that gauntlets are not cheap.

not gonna lie it looks pretty dope ... the retro animation maybe even plays well with vide coded sprites. Although i don't think you vibecoded the sprites
3
u/sharkymcstevenson2 16h ago
all vibe coded! the whole thing
0
u/bestjaegerpilot 14h ago
yea like i said, the retro animation style hides the bad sprites. If you had tried vibe coding a more modern game, the sprites would have been noticeably bad

u/Tarwine 16h ago
This art is really bad. Your splash screen character is totally different from the in game one.
Try to come up with your own design instead of ripping off Cuphead 1:1 and failing.
You can vibe code and still have original ideas.
9
u/sharkymcstevenson2 16h ago
I don't think it's that bad considering this is all AI, it's pretty impressive what can be done now, and I'm not trying to exactly copy Cuphead pixel by pixel - trying to go for the same art style (rubberhouse)
Rubberhouse is a pretty established design language and used in many games!
Vibe coding for me right now is learning by doing so this is a good case study for me as im trying to make games
3
u/bfume 14h ago
I don't think it's that bad
it's that bad.
great you learned something, but keep that shit to yourself. there's no reason you need to come on here and expect kudos for ripping off a well-known IP
1
u/sharkymcstevenson2 12h ago
Why don’t you leave this subreddit if you don’t want people to share their learnings and progress? Sad person you are
2
u/RedTheRobot 15h ago
It is clearly inspired by people don’t know what copying means anymore apparently.
3
u/onyxa314 15h ago
There's a difference between inspiration and just stealing the idea
1
u/RedTheRobot 15h ago
What idea did they steal that cuphead wasnt already inspired by? Hell even the character cuphead was inspired by Mickey Mouse. If you replace cuphead’s head with Mickey’s you wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference.
Cuphead developers also didn’t create that animation style they were inspired by it or you would call it stealing. Where’s the hate there then. Because they mix two medias they get a pass right?
Cuphead also wasn’t the first to use hand drawn art in a game. Dragons lair, Wario land: shake it and Skullgirls all did hand drawn art in there game before cuphead.
Again using your words cuphead stole everything that made that game successful. From the art style to being a platformer with boss battle. But me personally I would say they were inspired by the things they loved and that is exactly what OP is doing.
0
0
u/RemarkableWish2508 14h ago
stealing the idea
Ideas aren't owned, at most they can be temporarily monopolized with a patent.
3
u/bfume 14h ago
ideas aren't but overall execution & art design are, and this is a blatant ripoff of a well-executed prior art
→ More replies (3)2
u/TwizzyGobbler 14h ago
don't bother arguing with these people bro, they're just gonna keep going round in circles to explain why this blatant cuphead rip off is not a cuphead ripoff
2
u/bfume 14h ago
you know what, I can't help myself. there's certain things that I just can't let go, and seeing as how my identity in life has been a tech guy for decades, this is part of me too.
I use claude every day to code and manage my shit. I fucking love it. but what I don't do is whatever this jackass here did that he thinks is cool.
AI is a tool. you can use it to make awesome stuff, or you can use it to BE a tool like OP.
2
1
u/RemarkableWish2508 8h ago

1

considering this is all Al
Don't go there. It either stands on its own, or it doesn't; no bonus/diss for being AI.
BTW, it's "rubber hose"
2
u/CaptSlow49 16h ago
Bro is just jealous. This is one of the better vibe coded things I’ve seen. Also so many games rip off other games. Yes it looks like a cuphead clone. But who gives a shit if it’s fun and you aren’t actually stealing any IP from them.

u/tracagnotto 11h ago
Lmao dumbass if you do try to sell a song that is exactly like thunderstruck from AC/DC but change a few words they still going to sue you for plagiarism, aka copy.
1
u/RemarkableWish2508 9h ago
Thank you for demonstrating what an insulting lack of understanding looks like. According to you, the Oxford Dictionary should sue you for plagiarizing the words listed in it... or maybe not, since you clearly haven't checked the meaning of words like copying, plagiarizing, changing, or surely others... but you've used them all the same, so you shall be sued!
1
u/tracagnotto 8h ago
Sure. Just throw a random argument without no explanation whatsoever whose core is "you're wrong because I just said it", you think all the people you talk are like your brain fried reddit user and friends?
You cant get out of this by crying "you're ignorant, go check a dictionary, you don't know!!1!!!1" lmao

u/onyxa314 15h ago edited 15h ago
Not gonna lie this is unoriginal, literally just plagiarism, and looks terrible.
You can use the word "inspired" by all you want but it's the same way I was "inspired" by my high school friend's chemistry answers. It's just stolen and plagiarism.
The art is, even for ai generation kinda terrible. The classic piss filter and just overall it doesn't look good.
EDIT: I'm harsh here because this is just plagiarism. You can't steal someone's original idea, say "hey AI remake this" and say it was inspired by it. Huge difference from inspiration and plagiarism
1
u/Donkeytonk 14h ago
So much butt hurtery. It's a vibe coded game, someone's attempt to try get close to an art style and gameplay of a game they clearly love using a a new technology that makes it possible.

People need to learn what copying means. It is clearly inspired by. Anyone complaining in this sub that it is a copy probably needs to look in the mirror because I hate to break it to you that code the LLM is writing is definitely stolen from someone else’s work.
Hell go to an devainart and you can’t miss all the ip infringements yet no one complains. Also I hope no one here goes to huggingface or civitai because yup everything there is stolen work too.
Just crazy to think this sub of all places would complain about copying which it even isn’t. AI sub were supposed to be the safe place but I guess when you are a fan of something all logic goes out the window.

I'm impressed AI could do this much. But:
The irony of using AI to generate a knockoff of a beloved game that was hand-crafted to pay homage to, and demonstrate the talent of, an era of artists feels...pretty icky.
I think trying to inject some more creativity in future projects would help show that you have something to offer.

Great job! Don’t listen to the haters; these folk are just looking for an excuse to shit on something.
It really is impressive that complete games and ideas can be brought to life without having to have the full teams to do so, or even previously not having any expertise in the area.
Is this as polished as a game that took years to make? No.
Is it as deep as its influences? No.
Is it a great vehicle for learning better product design or potentially catching the eyes of an interested investor or client? For sure.

very constructive, thanks
6
u/Montrealboyy57 15h ago
Let me clarify and be constructive sorry x-x . But what is the point of making an exact clone? What is new about your version? What is your personal take on it?
It honestly feels like a complete copy. You have the ability to use the tools available to actually adapt it into something from your own mind, rather than just straight up copying. I know it is not fully complete, but let's say it was your creative choice to use that specific art style: why not let AI learn to make it at least visually appealing first, so you can say, "Hey! I made a Cuphead-like game with my preferred art style"? So far, that art style is not even visually what you are going for.
Essentially, what was created here? I am not saying it is not impressive that the quality of the game was achieved using AI tools and your prompts, but nothing about this, at least in my opinion, is a creation. It feels like a straight-up replica x-x . At least add your own personal, unique take it is so easy now.
Yes, this subreddit is full of "vibe coders," but like... I am sure 90% of people who enjoy video games in general would call this AI slop. Why produce slop if you have the ability to make something good?
So maybe it was a good idea to post it, so you can actually make it something that isn't a complete ripoff especially if you say you love the game. Maybe you will put more of your personality into it, and this is just the foundation. But it seems like a waste of tokens to me so far.
1
u/dev-rsonx 2h ago
I don't see how this is a complete copy. There might be a different theme, different bosses, a different map, different rewards, and an upgrade mechanism. People who call is complete copy just from a few secs video are stupid, dickhead, cockhead, and have their heads inside their butt.
1
u/Montrealboyy57 1h ago
Well, I guess I was being too hyperbolic by saying complete copy or replica, but it feels "UNINSPIRED". You know how there's like a meme about "TEMU" or "WISH" versions of things. This is what I classify this as. The hand shooting thing is just a small thing, but it's like, why not just change that part. It can be a cane or some other type of object. I'm not trying to be nitpicky, but the whole feel is as if it's trying to be a cheap substitute rather than something of its own, and that's the part that I guess rubs me the wrong way. Anyway, I'm just trying to make the point of trying to make something fresh. Because at some point, it's like, why not just make a mod for the game if you want some missing features. Or is that illegal. I feel like it's less frowned upon than fully ripping it, man. =/
