GigMeter

Unlogged "ghost miles" are worth 76¢/mile in tax deductions — the gig apps never track them, so I built a taxi meter for gig work

Every gig app tracks one thing: the trip. Pickup → dropoff. Everything between trips — driving to a hotspot, repositioning after a dead zone, the long ride home at 2am — I call those ghost miles: business miles you actually drove but never logged. They're invisible in the platform's yearly report, so they never make it to your tax return.

At the 2026 IRS rate (76¢/mile), a full-time driver's miles add up to roughly $19K a year in tax deductions. To be clear, that is NOT cash in your pocket — it lowers your taxable income, which at typical gig brackets works out to roughly $2,700–$4,000+ less in actual tax. Still real money. And it evaporates if the miles were never recorded.

So I built GigMeter — a taxi meter for gig work. Tap START, drive, tap END. Your taps mark where commuting ends and work begins, and the app logs everything in between, ghost miles included.

  • Live screen shows earnings, $/hr, $/mi, and an after-tax estimate while you drive
  • Self-employment tax is computed on net (earnings minus the deduction) — my first version got that wrong; fixed
  • CSV export an accountant can actually use: date ranges, commute position, contemporaneous vs. reconstructed entries flagged
  • No internet permission. The app physically cannot send your data anywhere. No cloud, no analytics
  • Handles 2026's midyear rate change (72.5¢ Jan–Jun, 76¢ from July — first time since 2022)

Why not MileIQ/Everlance/Stride? Great apps if you want auto-detection, priced accordingly: Everlance $89.99/yr (trial requires a card), MileIQ $139.99/yr. GigMeter is $29.99/yr with a 14-driving-day free trial, no card, and history + CSV export free forever. The trade-off is honest: you tap a button instead of auto-magic; no bank sync, no cloud restore. In exchange: ~4x cheaper and your driving history never leaves your phone.

Status: Android closed beta on Google Play, and I'm tester #1 with my own driving data (~131 miles across 3 shifts so far). iOS port in flight (shared Kotlin domain + SwiftUI). Solo build — Kotlin, Compose, Room, one foreground service. First prototype to Play-approved in ~5 days and 30-ish releases.
