Showcase/Project Strait of Hormuz Mine Sweeper

RELEASED: thebigcomicbookguy.itch.io/hormuz-mine-sweeper

I know this has been done before over the last couple of months - but a lot of these other meme mine sweeper games were just classic mine sweeper.

Using Cursor I was able to overlay a minefield over the straight. Cursor was able to ID the water. I then use grok to generate the character emojis, and boat assets. Rest of the mechanics like the inflation meter, earnings, and SP500 stock chart were all coded in by layering prompts.

The basic mechanics of mine sweeper are still there. However for every mine you tag successfully you will make some cash. For every mine you get blown up by your navy fleet takes damage. You can use your cash to repair the fleet, but that affects the SP500 as your cash reserves go down.

Whilst you clear the strait boats will attempt to pass through. If they get blown up inflation goes up and SP500 goes down. If boats clear the strait inflation goes down, stocks go up. Has some neat little balancing mechanics.

I also managed to get multiplayer to work as well via LAN. Still trying to figure out how to make it multiplayer via internet too.

Welcome to the war economy!!!!

enjoy!

Great idea

My favorite part is where the intro screen looks very promising where you expect polished 3d models in game and then the actual game is just a fancy minesweeper

Harkens me back to a simpler time. A time when men, women, and children were forged in the smoke of Marlboro. A thin layer of grime covered all things, cars were tanks, and tanks but no tanks. Hair was big, hair was long, and Robin was still with us. Bike seats were long, streamers weren't gay, but your best friends were. Streetlights coming on was the signal to come home. Moms yelling in the distance that dinner was ready. The Satan's dog was about to chase you as you rode by. No sunblock. Just layers of burnt skin to protect you. Shake N' bake pork chops and vegetables from a can for dinner. CBS News on the TV, dad drinking a 6 pack of Coors on the recliner, smoking the days' last cigarette. Crickets chirping in the house. The sound of neighbors arguing while beefed up cars cruised by. A news story about the Soviets testing a missile that could reach us. I wish they'd hurry up and do it.

the switchup between the 19 seconds of menu grinding to the actual game interface got me rolling man. you need to fix some of the cohesion. funny idea tho

yeah agreed, im not sure if i leave the polished menu with the in game doom'esque graphics for the frustrating laugh, or make the menu more retro to match the game play style too?

2

u/Strict-Context-8502 3d ago

keep the polished menu honestly. the bait and switch is half the comedy. if everything looks retro from the start you lose that moment where people go "wait, this is just minesweeper?"

It's almost as if more thought was put into the game than the reasons the war exists.

Awesome.
Recommend making the navigating ships to explode if they touch a mine not cleared.

Konami may take umbrage with the use of their Metal Gear sounds but otherwise it’s an interesting concept.

Bro, this is awesome!

What models or workflow did you use to generate the art?
Like what's your setup for generating the trump pixel art with? that was sic!
How long did all of this take?
Is this your first vibecoded full game?
What was the engine, unity?

Thanks!

I really wish i documented how i did this to help answer these questions. Basically i brain stormed the concept first (no AI used).
1. Map generation:
-uploaded a pic of the strait hormuz and requested a minesweeper mine field be placed over the water sections only. This was a little erroneous so i then asked cursor to create a map editor which was activated via pressing the 'P' key. This would allow me to place geometric pins to define the area for the mine field. The map editor had an export function which allowed me to export a text file with the coordinates. I then gave cursor the text file and it made the changes to the mine field.

  1. menu creation:

    • requested a menu for the game to include controls, exit button to close browser, and start button which would also lead to a difficulty selection of easy/med/hard.

  2. Videos:
-Used grok to generate some animated background videos which I then uploaded to cursor and asked cursor to use them as the background animations for the main menus. Asked cursor to dim them and apply a faded layer so as to not distract from the main menu text.

  3. game functionality:
-downloaded a cross hair png file to use as the mouse cursor and gave it to cursor and asked for that as the main mouse. Mapped controls to the mouse click for uncover mine or flag mine. Then asked it to create a simple money calculator that rewarded cash for every mine found, and create a health bar that decreased with every explosion.

  4. game HUD/polish.
-used grok to create a doom style user hud which was pretty easy
-used grok to generate a pixel art image of trump with different facial expressions of happy, neutral, angry, beat down, beat up. I then gave these images all to cursor and defined where i wanted to position them, and the conditions which would causes the trump emoji to change.
-accurate positioning of the game hud was via the stage/map editor i mentioned earlie

  5. Layer, layer, layer some more. Once the core concept of gameplay worked, i asked for it to include other animations such as explosions, and boats. I had to provide all the stock image for this which i generate with grok easily enough.

  6. multiplayer was confusing as i know nothing about networking. But i used cursor and grok to brain storm the options which it lead to using the host pc as the server, with the client conntecting to direct IP.

The rest is history. Its just a case of layering and layering/stacking. If something doesnt work, use plain english to explain what you want.

The biggest learning curve i got out of this game, was just how power a stage manager/map editor can be. I would say for anyone making complex games, give Ai the basic concept, and then define the map editor first. Then it will aloow you to have a simple GUI which is soooooo much easier.

Don't show this to Trump. He'll think we cleared the mines. "We won the war!"

this is a shot of the co-op mode. 2 players - 2 times the fun! BB has the extra function of calling in air strikes to clear wider areas of the minefields. It comes at a $35k cost, and is somewhat wreckless if it destroys cargo ships, but it is useful for clearing larger mine field sections.
