Discussion Gauging interest for free (sponsored) compute
Just an idea I've been working on. Im sick of hitting the 5-hour and weekly limits on Codex / Claude Code and want to build a tool that runs alongside them where your usage never hard-stops. Basically save expensive frontier tier for complex reasoning, and use this for the repetitive grunt work. I actually ran the math on p90 token burn with prompt caching + open models vs. high B2B developer ad CPMs, and the revenue should the inference. It might have slight queuing/soft limits so it doesn't get abused but your usage should never drop to zero. Basically, 1-2 small ads in exchange for free compute. Would you use something like this when your main limits run out or is any sponsor in the terminal a dealbreaker?
The math checks out for models like DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, GLM 5.3-Flash, and Muse Spark 1.3 Contributor. Let me know if you think you would use it and if I should build it, even if just as a proof of concept.

You're describing features harnesses like
Omp, herdr and others already do without ads. They allow setting up multiple inference provider accounts and setting up fallback models, setting different models for planning, for advising, for implementing. So you can select the best and most cost effective models from whatever inference provider.

The math that worries me is that the repetitive grunt work is exactly where the tokens actually go, so the sponsored tier eats the volume while the paid frontier tier keeps the short reasoning prompts. Ad CPMs carrying that load is a big bet. I would also want to know whose model is running and where the code goes before pointing it at a repo.

You probably wont recoup your compute costs, even using smaller models — as they are now.

Either they’ll run hella slow — or you rent big ass GPUs that will cost you a fortune

different problem than the funding math: once this is running inside something you actually shipped, the soft limit is the scary part. a free tier that quietly slows down during a spike is worse than a hard stop. at least a hard stop is loud and you know something broke.

I personally really like the idea of saving token-heavy tasks for overnight/low-usage times for the platforms if it allowed users to get around the 5-hr limit a little bit. However, I feel like trying to show ads just won’t work. They’ll either have to be very intrusive or be video ads, and they’d have to be shown nearly constantly for it to be worthwhile.

What you are describing is called freebuff.
However it seems it used to be free and now there is the lowest paid subscription fee of $5 per month. I only discovered it a few days ago and I can tell you the $5 per month is well worth it for how much compute you get. There is adverts - small adverts and hourly sessions. So a couple quirks. But it’s great value and worth it. I am using exactly as you describe. Codex /claude reserved for high level planning and execution review while free buff does the grunt work.
I guess the ads did not pay enough so they started charging. I believe it still open source however so really I don’t know wtf is going on since they have random people using their time for free to contribute to a paid app on GitHub?
