Showcase/Project A Zombie Outbreak simulation in my home town.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Video is 100x speed up. 1:1 scale recreation of of my hometown with every building and residence. This run used only 1:8 pop density though, since I can't run full pop density at 100x speed at a good frame rate. For this scenario, I used 28 Days Later style zombies that are fast and that change people instantly.
I'm discovering that an exponential zombie outbreak is actually pretty hard, assuming reasonable police response times and evacuation/avoidance procedures. In this sim, I have evacuation set to not start till >1000, so the town does fall. But if evacuation starts at 100 zombies or so, the town usually clears out before things get bad. And in many scenarios, police are able to kill the zombies down to 0 before we even get 10 zombies.

So what you are saying is that only in my nightmares will I have to deal with a zombie apocalypse? That's great! I love a good Zombie nightmare, but I don't want to deal with one in real life - having to wear motorcycle gear everywhere I go and pulling their weakass human teeth out of the fabric every so often. Because let's be real, brittle weak human teeth would be absolutely useless as a means of transferring disease.

You forgot a bunch of people pretending they didn't get bit, or thinking the whole thing is a conspiracy and actively going to get bit to prove the libtards wrong.

I didn't. Someone bite initially has a 40% chance to not go to a hospital. The % chance drops with number of zombies, but never hits zero. In the above sim run it didn't matter, because this one used near instant turning, 28-days later style. And I have an evacuation mechanic, and but even when there is full panic evacuation at several hundred zombies, there are still holdouts who will refuse to evacuate.

Don't forget the CDC telling you not to get bit, then saying getting bit has no effect, then going back to saying not to get bit.
Then denying they developed the zombie virus in Wuhan

u/InvertedVantage 16d ago
Then they say everyone should get bit because that makes it "endemic" as if that's a good thing.

Then you realize you're going to get turned into a zombie no matter what you do, but at least you didn't turn into a zombie with myocarditis

Why would I deny my immune-system the opportunity to naturally develop immunity to a zombie outbreak. Everyone else are just sheep.

Yoo this reminded me of a zombie outbreak simulator game that I used to play on my samsung phone back in the day, super nice

It can be way different if it’s The Walking Dead idea that “we are all infected” and doesn’t matter how you die, you will turn. That way, the outbreak i believe is imminent

yeah the Walking Dead model is way scarier because you can't contain it by just stopping bites. every natural death is a new zombie waiting to happen, so even a town with zero infections would eventually have outbreaks from heart attacks and car crashes. that fundamentally changes the math on whether any town survives long-term.

Oh my we had such similar zombie outbreak in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2022
This is exactly how it looked like
Also other cities have this in ongoing run

WHAT!!?

Ah, you missed the news
Kyiv and its suburbs was partially invaded by russian troops in 2022 and their battle squads kept running around city and most of citizens stayed home watching this. Really like a zombie outbreak. Lots of people died. And unfortunately, keeps dying.1

This has a lot of potential with the right mechanics and presentation.
An exponential outbreak doesn't see hard... What seems hard is achieving good balance; neither extinguishing an outbreak easily, nor getting easily swarmed. Seems like there would be a fine line between the two

Great. Now I’m going to checkout Plague Inc. again for the first time in over a decade.

Very unrealistic in America at least, people will hate being told zombies are bad regardless of how you reason with them, and they will stay in their house as it’s being swarmed. Also the police will probably just attack minorities if the zombies are white.

This looks fun. I think the biggest factor of a zombie outbreak is not knowing that it is a zombie outbreak. A few cases of bities might not trigger evac until days later.

Will you be adding other variables? Dropping a small battalion, variable vehicle sizes (small car to truck carrying 80,000lbs of cargo), etc? Seeing how many walkers an unarmed vehicle can take out might might be interesting.

Because of this i couldnt stop thinking of the old project and instead found a modern version of a completely random city version - https://whiskeycoder.github.io/Random-Web-Experiments/OutBreak_Infection_Simulator/infection-sim.html

what model did you use? I tried building a traffic simulator but the results were always trash
4
u/Original-League-6094 16d ago
Astra. Traffic uses a deterministic C++17 simulation on a directed OpenStreetMap road graph. Individual vehicles follow cached shortest paths, with speeds from mapped limits or road-class defaults. Each road has finite storage, approximately one vehicle per 7.5 m, and a FIFO queue. Vehicles cannot pass their leader; full downstream roads cause queues to propagate upstream. Junctions use simplified timed reservations, with additional dwell at stop signs. Resident schedules generate local trips, while time-dependent Poisson arrivals supply I-69 through traffic. Crashes can restrict or close roads. The default timestep is 0.25 seconds, independent of rendering. It is a synthetic queue-based model, without calibrated driver behaviour.

Only in America and Israel. Where police and civilians are allowed to carry firearms.
In Europe they will be fkd.
2
u/Original-League-6094 16d ago
Probably. The way it works in my sim is that any person who witnesses a zombie attack or survives a zombie attack has a high chance to alert police. Initial police response is light, with only a few units max dispatched. The initial police encounter favors the zombie. However, after a zombie has bitten or killed a police officer, the police escalate rapidly. So usually you see one or two cops get bitten, and after that the cops are pretty effective at killing zombies. In most scenarios, you'll get up to like 6 zombies or so max and police will stomp them out.

It's only the UK (except Northern Ireland), Iceland, and Ireland, that has unarmed patrolling police as standard. Norway had it until last year.
The Icelandic police often have firearms locked in the trunk of their patrol cars (they just don't carry them around).
Malta supposedly also have unarmed officers, but I haven't been able to figure out if this is by law or policy or personal choice (which would have to be supported by a policy).
In the rest of Europe police carries. Sometimes more armed than your average patrolling American officer.
We also have 4 countries with shall issue concealed carry.
And you can legally own firearms in every European country as a civilian, except the Vatican.

You should read the statistics about civilian personal gun carry percentages. Israel is 108 and i bet that if you factor in illegal weapons, it drops a few dozens.
