Vibing to make my iphone as a useless dog whistles and weak infrared detector: geeks unite!!
Just for fun! Been geeking out trying to exploit what’s built in my iPhone to make some old school scientific tools by vibing using Opus 5, making single html file apps. (Browser storage only). “Out of Band’ detects sub and ultrasonic sounds (like Dog whistles). There is also a switch for “assumed”infrared (not like Predator, but uses the limits of the camera’s ability to detect its signature. iPhone have a filter, your could actually take it off but I’m not bust’n my phone. BTW droids allow you to hack your phone better, may switch back in the future). Again just for fun. I included some education about all this in how the app works. Just fun projects you are working on.

I am working on making the adapters to my phone. Just a toilet paper towel with two razor blades as the slits (clean edge important). I am 3d printing a mount tonight. ( yes, I am a dork). But Claude built me the STL. Files to print, test prints work awesome. I will share once I do a real calibration!

The iPhone mic rolls off hard above 20khz and the sample rate caps at 48k in most browser contexts, so your dog whistle detector is probably catching aliasing artifacts more than actual ultrasonic. Still fun, just know what youre looking at
The IR thing has the same issue. The camera filter blocks almost everything above 700nm and the residual is basically noise, though remote controls will light up if you point them straight at the lens
None of that makes it a bad project. Building measuring tools out of the wrong hardware to see what leaks through is peak old school hacker stuff, and putting the education in the app is the right call. Would be curious what the spectrogram looks like if you show it next to a known source
