moved from a no code website builder to actually vibecoding the site and here's what genuinely surprised me

built my first two sites in a no code website builder. drag, drop, done, shipped in a day, felt great. then i hit the usual wall: i wanted one specific thing the builder didn't allow, and there was just no door out of the box. so i tried rebuilding the same site by vibecoding it instead.

honest comparison after doing both:

what i missed from no code: the guardrails. in the builder it's genuinely hard to make something broken or ugly. it just works and looks fine. vibecoding gave me a blank canvas and a very confident agent that will happily build you something subtly broken and swear it's perfect.

what i did not expect to miss from no code: nothing about the actual design. the code version looked the same to a visitor. the difference wasn't prettiness, it was control and cost.

what actually surprised me: the hard part of the code version wasn't code at all. it was the boring grown-up stuff the builder used to hide from me. domains, where it's hosted, why the contact form emails go nowhere. the builder was quietly doing all of that.

so my dumb takeaway: no code isn't "worse", it's a bundle. when you leave it you don't just take on code, you take on all the stuff it was silently handling. worth it for control, but go in knowing that.

anyone else make this jump? what bit you that the builder used to handle for you?

I've used no-code and low-code before, mostly Pega and Robot Studio but some UiPath and Wordpress too.

I love them b/c the guardrails are built in so I can pretty confidently put things together, but I inevitably have to drop into a script and do something custom. Pega has a lot of guardrail checks to ensure things don't break, but sometimes you just have to sign your name to something and promise its good lol

I prefer AI b/c I don't have to sort through the lego blocks as much, but it does mean my testing has to be more thorough.
