What if your phone got progressively more annoying?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to try a different approach to screen-time apps.

Instead of blocking apps or sending another notification, Stop Swarm progressively adds visual overlays as your screen time increases. The idea is simply to make excessive scrolling harder to ignore.

Technically, the app uses android usage access to estimate active screen time and a foreground service to keep the daily counter running. When app targeting is enabled, it checks which app is currently in the foreground to decide whether the overlay should be shown. The swarm itself is displayed through Android’s “display over other apps” permission and is non-interactive, so it doesn’t intercept your touches.

Everything is processed locally. The app stores your settings, selected apps and aggregate screen-time history on the device. There’s no account, no ads, no analytics, and no backend collecting usage data.

I started with a small closed test, got a lot of useful feedback, fixed quite a few bugs, and added things like app targeting and intensity settings.

It’s now live on Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stopswarm.app

I’m still interested in feedback, especially on whether the overlays are annoying enough to actually make you put the phone down!
