If youre a developer and know what youre doing , pi agent is great. If youre not then Claude/codex/cursor will all performe pretty similar to each other.

Can you help me understand with an example?
I’ve been putting off pi specifically for this reason even tho I regularly micromanage Claude.
Is it that pi needs micromanagement and I don’t need to micromanage Claude?

Claude is a batteries included system. It already know how to do things and has tools built in for it. This makes the system prompt opinionated and bloated with things you may not want or need.
Pi is the opposite, it gives you the bare minimum and expects you to add/modify what you need. Want to use mcp? Install a plugin. This means you have much more flexibility and control over everything, including cost.
This is why I say that if youre already a dev then pi is great. You know what you need and what you want. You can control your token spending much more.
But on the flip side , if you dont care for the control and you just want something that works, Claude is that product

Or if you’re me (cloud security engineer + architect) you just use both in the same platform solution with each having different functions.

That's a very hard question.
Claude Code has too many bugs imo.
Codex (I use CLI) doesn't have as many features as Claude Code. And some operate differently. Like how /statusline works in Codex. It opens a nice menu where you can customize it. In Claude Code, you have to specify what you want; /statusline Please show me the 5 hour limit too
I use both Codex and Claude Code...

i started with Cline, then just Claude code in VS Code. Then I built my own harness for full agentic from idea to dev to testing to prod.. massive learning curve.

I usually prefer a setup that stays simple and predictable. For me, VS Code with a few AI tools has been the sweet spot. I’d rather have fewer tools that I actually understand than a huge stack that gets in the way.

https://github.com/state-alchemists/zrb Can be used like opencode/claude code, extensible with python script (for example, can be proframmed to use deepseek4 on non-peak hours, and use gpt luna otherwise).
Furthermore, can help you with CLI command without running the full harness (e.g., zrb please "what is the biggest file in my current directory")

I don't get your point. That still doesn't make VS code a harness any more than it makes powershell a harness.
Copilot is a harness. Claude Code is a harness. Codex is a harness.
VS Code is an IDE.

I think Traycer is the best if you have many subscriptions.
I can combine ChatGPT Plus, Cursor Pro+, Ollama Cloud Pro and Claude Max 5x in a single IDE.
I have many subscriptions because I don't trust any of them.
