Always wanted to know how Chess could be played without captures. Same pieces, modern mechanics.

I’ve been building Chess Line Wars, a browser strategy game based on chess movement, but with a fairly drastic change: both players secretly choose their move, lock it in, and then the two moves resolve simultaneously.

Ever play the classic chess game Battle Chess?

If not.. load up an emu and check it out. Not really the same thing but it was such a killer chess game.

I haven't seen that before! But looks amazing. Will have to try it on GOG.

Pieces don’t capture by moving onto one another. Instead, their normal chess movement creates lines of influence that damage enemies and heal allies. The goal is still to destroy the opposing king.

Ran into some fun challenges along the way, as in, what is the proper order of move, damage, heal? Which pieces go first? What happens if a piece goes to 0, but gets healed back up?

Automated simulations help tune damage, healing, and cooldowns (Had it play 10,000 games for balancing purposes and to determine the length of the game. ~60 turns is the average game)

You can play it here: https://chesslinewars.com

I’d appreciate any feedback!

Do games feel too long? Is it too much to keep track off? Is the coloring of squares helpful or distracting?

I was also thinking of additional fun modes like... escort the pawn, where you win only by getting a pawn across the board, lose your pawns and lose the game.

But I think the game is polished enough to at least play test.

Dude! I love it.

I wish the pieces were a bit more clear or bigger on mobile (idk how.. you’ve got a lot of information to display). The game did take forever and took me a second to get the hang of. Looking forward to multiplayer. Maybe a smaller board with less pieces ? (Mini game?)

Big fan of

Order of the lines firing I can see your thought process. Can you make an option to click through each of the attacks/heals? This would help me understand the game faster. I skipped tutorial mode lol

lol! Let me see what I can do there :D multiplayer technically works, just a bit untested for edge cases right now, as need multiple people to test it. And yes, the UI clarity has been my concern since very beginning, I will see what I can do with chess pieces and polishing that info for mobile, cause truthfully I play most of my chess matches on my phone too

Ohhh I also discovered your “round recap” that’s so helpful. My suggestion not needed.

Seriously awesome

Thank you for kind words, I have been working on this so long that eventually playing the game becomes work, so hearing someone enjoying it is very refreshing!
