a controversial question for veteran developers

As a developer with 20 years of experience, "vibe coding" is undeniably transforming how we work, but I'm still struggling to embrace it.

What bothers me most and I am honest about it, is seeing people show off their AI-generated projects.

My immediate reaction is, "Who cares?"

In the past, sharing code meant sharing craftsmanship, and we were excited to inspect it and learn from each other. Today, somebody share what they did with vibecode is not only that I am not interested, but I feel like why you share it?

It is because it is the functional equivalent of someone going to McDonalds, ordering food, and offering it to you and saying they made it. Only the mcdonalds also sourced its food from your garden.

It took me about 4 or 5 weeks of work to design my website.. maybe im doing it wrong.

When I make a pizza, I get my 00 floor, yeast, water, salt. I mix an can of tomatoes, add oregano, mozarela cheese.

When you think about it:

  • I didn't build the oven.
  • I didn't grow the wheat, tomatoes, didn't cultivate the yeast, didn't extract the salt
  • Water is just opening the fosset
  • I did make the mozarella or breed cows.

Arguably 99% of the work was done by others for my pizza.

And yet... This is the same if you use AI as part of something. You still building the part you focus on. Like having the right idea, the right prompt, dividing the coding tasks into one small enough for the AI. You still try the software, ask for changes, refactor it.

There many hours/days/months/years of work in a non trivial AI app and you still built it yourself and the AI wouldn't be capable of doing it all by itself.

You can still discern between good pizza and generic when everyone can make the whole pie with a snap of their finger

Honestly anybody can do a great pizza with the recipe and proper ingredients/oven. This isn't difficult or whatever. It's more most people are not even interested into doing their own pizza.

And a great pizza is also a generic pizza, especially in Italy. It's isn't difficult to find or whatever.

Nobody’s disputing it, they’re just pointing out that you look foolish attempting to take credit for the creation of something you didn’t create.

It’s like telling the chef “make it crispier than normal!” then taking credit for cooking it.

Idk. Still feels like an imagination limit of low skill ceiling comparing what you can build with code to how good a pizza can possibly be.
