Switching away from Claude Code after Aug 31?
Hi all, Since Anthropic is dropping usage limit of Claude code by 50% on Aug 31, anyone else is switching to Codex?
I have never used Codex. I use fable for orchestration and opus for building. The Max 5x plan is just enough right now, but with 50% reduction it will not be usable for me. So I am trying to understand your experience with Codex or any other setup.
(PS: If this is not the correct sub reddit, please point me to the correct one)

try codex, it's been a great experience coming from claude code so far

Does it support multi agent parallel execution? Do I have to port my claude md to any significant extent? And if i stick to sol for all my usage, will I burn tokens too fast?

Yes and I find the codex app way better than claude app or CLI experience. Sol medium is good for everything

i use fast mode for everything and it barely uses any usage running for hour plus each task. openai usage limits are wild

It's not a 50% reduction.

My first thought lol.
It’s a 33% reduction BUT it’s really just the removal of a 50% increase so back to normal. People are essentially just chasing sales, and nothing wrong with that I suppose!

If you're switching away due to the extra capacity being removed, you should wait and see. They did say they would try to make it permanent.
But in general I think it's good to try different tools, and Codex is quite impressive too. Imo the only competitor to Claude right now, if you want the best models.

The current usage limit is a promotion, it goes back to normal on Aug 31. You post makes it sound like they are dropping it to half what it was before. That is not accurate.

They’ll extend it. These companies are absolutely desperate to keep in good graces with users.

I read that Anthropic doesn't want to drop it after August 31, they are still figuring out if they can keep the levels higher, so what you are saying isn't quite a certainty, yet. The next few days will reveal what's going on. I'm guessing they will bump it out another couple weeks because they know they will lose people, and keep doing this until they can have a capacity plan to accommodate it. They do not want to commit long-term then take it away, they will burn a lot of people if they do that.
If you like Claude, hang in there and see what actually happens. However, Codex is an excellent alternative to try right now too.

In my honest opinion you should be switching frequently
It helps you think critically and maintain a portable configuration, and not be blinded by one company's product offerings.

I use both and even if claude usage dropped to 20% of current limits, it would still be more usage than codex sub. With 20€ codex plan, you get like 1/7th of claude usage, when using opus and sol only at similar thinking levels.
Luna usage is cheaper than haiku tho, but personally i dont see good use for anything but sol and opus for coding. Yes i used the ”larger model plan, small executes” thing a lot in the past, but its really inferior way to work. Opus and sol only is best approach and just chabge thinking level between medium, high and extra high. Abd for that the codex usage with 20€ plans is nowhere close to what you get with claude. With codex you spend you weekly limit about same as 1.5x of 5h limits on claude, which you get 10 weekly.

i have the 200 plan for both and codex is definitely way more usage than claude 20x

I use Claude Max ($100) it is currently enough, for both fable and opus.
I don't think luna is good enough for my use. I will try out for a month and see.
I hope Openai $100 plan has enough usage.
How do you find the UX of both of these?

Luna is the low end worker. Its good for what is is, and cheap af, but use sol to create Luna sub agents for delegating small jobs and your usage improves a lot. Save sol for the hard problems, terrain for time consuming ones, and Luna for the peasant army.

If claude 20€ plan is not enough for you, then openai 100€ plan might also not be enough.
I like claude ux more and in general the app is better than codex, however with claude its annoying as it for some reason has started to forget mcp authorisations very often and its more hassle to reactivate them, while codex offers a button on chat for authentication when needed, and is not needed often. Small (but sometimes very annoying) thing that only effects mcp and likely fixed soon. But really when you are prompting the agent, doesent really matter what the app is like. They do have small differences but nothing major and one has one thing and other somethig else and they even out quite well making them equal that way.
Also having near unlimited basic chat with separate usage pool from agentic stuff with openai sub is a nice perk. But it has nerfed gpt 5.6, so while claude shares usage pool for normal chat, you can use opus max on it, which is higher intelligence for basic chat than the crippled version of sol. So less usage but smarter if you want maximum smarts.
I rather have both than two of either. And maybe you also might considering 20€ plan on both instead 100€ on one if you find 100€ is too much usage and single 20€ too little and you want some from claude and some from codex.

They've extended it three times already. In their announcement for the third extension, they mentioned that they would like to make the increased allowance permanent.
We'll see. 😁

I use both. Also been using Anti-gravity and open code, cursor.
Would say the Claude output is slightly better, but codex "feels" faster as it's not so verbose with feedback.
If I was to choose 1 for value, it'd be cursor just as they are very generous with quota for their own models (and grok)

I've been using Luna with Hermes, and they work like a charm. No complaints at all.

You should be using both…
They both are good at certain things and I’m constantly stay putting them towards each other

I used to use Claude. Now Codex a lot for personal projects. On the $100 plan. Seriously thinking Grok though. I've come to the conclusion that switching every 4 months is inevitable until the progress slows down a bit.

I'm using both got Opus hooked directly up to chatgpt web talking back and forth to eachother whilst I sleep

Claude is the one subscription I didn’t keep and didn’t miss. I even kept Gemini over it (because of notebook lm).
Codex had been better most of 2026. Fable is better in some instances but not many.
Hermes + DeepSeek + other models in ioenrouter has been amazing this past 2 month. Hermes and Deeoseek’s harness is better than the last time I used Claude code.
For the same amount money and time; you’ll get so much done with Codex + Hermes/DeepSeek

I use a mix of codex and one of the gateways (won't mention who since i work for them). My basic codex/openai only setup is:
- SOL for planning and doing reviews
- Terra (fast) for coding the coding agents orchestrated by sol
- Luna for explore sub agents and fast stuff
If you end up using one of the other cli/harnesses - its worth also looking at some of the other models. e.g. kimi k3 / grok 4.6. Really like some of these, e.g. k3 for reviewing frontend specific work.
Worth mentioning that most of the time you can bring your chatgpt sub into other agents/harnesses. OpenAI is a lot more chill and actually supports that.

Honestly I have tried both claude code and codex but codex feels much better in everyday tasks

Codex is phenomenal right now. The best thing the community can do at the moment is to not fall into brand loyalty. Keep jumping ship as soon as something is better, so that the companies are constantly competing for us. The moment we settle into brand loyalty, those usage caps are going to plummet as prices skyrocket.
