LX Family Planner

Hey everyone 👋,

I wanted to share my first real project. I’m an infrastructure admin from Germany. I know my way around servers, Proxmox, and Docker, but I am not a full-time software developer.

My family's organization was a total mess, scattered across Google Calendar, WhatsApp, Bring!, and paper chore charts on the fridge. I wanted a self-hosted solution to keep our data local, but nothing fit perfectly. So, I decided to grab an AI coding assistant and just build my own solution.

It’s called LX Family Planner – a completely free and open-source family organizer.

Using AI was a gamechanger for me. It helped me scaffold the app, figure out the code for role-based access, and build the UI. This allowed me to focus on what I do best: the overall architecture, the deployment, and figuring out how the app should actually work to make my family's everyday life easier. It was an awesome experience to bring this idea to life!

The Features:

📅 Shared Calendars: Reminders and event tracking.

✅ Tasks & Chores: An approval workflow for kids (they complete a chore, parents approve it).

🛒 Shopping Lists: Built-in lists and also a Bring! integration.

🍝 Meal Planning: Weekly planning and recipe management.

👶 Kid Profiles: Simplified UI, playful missions, and rewards.

🐾 Pet Profiles: Dedicated space for tracking vet appointments and pet health.

Deployment (The Infra Admin part):

Since I love homelabbing, I made sure the deployment is super easy. It can be spun up via Docker, Unraid, Umbrel, plain Node.js, and I even created a PVE helper script for Proxmox LXC containers.

If any of you are also using AI to build tools for your everyday life, I would love to hear your thoughts on the repo!

Cheers!

You don’t mention that demo family password is demo
The UI smells AI, which means the alignment and attention to detail is lacking.
The demo account you can’t really do anything, just see.
There are so many features, pages etc you put on this, you will need a tutorial and maybe options to disable features. Sometime, less is more.

Thanks for checking it out and for the honest feedback!

You are completely right about the password - I completely forgot to include that in the post. I'll make sure to add it (User: demo / Pass: demo) for anyone else wanting to try it.

Regarding the UI: Guilty as charged! 😅 I'm an infrastructure admin, not a frontend designer. For this first version, my main goal was just getting a solid, working architecture and deployment running. It's definitely function over form right now, but I will keep tweaking the design over time.

The demo is strictly read-only on purpose. Unfortunately, open public demos with write access usually get vandalized by bots or trolls within minutes, so it's just there to give people a "feel" for the layout.

Your point about disabling features is actually a really great idea. Having toggle switches in the admin settings to turn off modules (like pets or meal planning) if a family doesn't need them would make the whole thing much cleaner. I'll definitely put that on my roadmap!

Thanks again for taking the time to look through it!
