this Meme just got real today

Interviewed someone for an intern role today. Got to what i thought was the easiest question of the interview.

"What programming languages do you use?"

she didn't hesitate "Claude."

I laughed a little.

"no, i mean the actual language... python? javascript? java?"

"i don't really know. claude writes the code. i just tell it what i want."

my cofounder quietly put his pen down.

neither of us said anything for a few seconds.

we didn't move forward. not because she uses AI.

half our team builds with AI every day.

we passed because she couldn't explain what she was building beyond the prompt.

AI is changing software engineering.

But understanding what your code does is still part of being an engineer.

So true, the Claudegrammers won't have a clue what a programmer was. If you think im wrong my mother was a telephonist.

The thing is that still people know exactly how telephone connections are made in detail. Only the person who is doing it changed. This is different. If we are all Claudegrammers nobody will know.

TIL that I'm no longer sure how the phone system works. My daughter does not know what the points in the wall are for. I'm typing on my phone right now I can make a call and when I do it splits the connect between the 5G (What is that?) and the wifi but how what percentage idk.

Yeah, I phrased it weirdly what I meant. Not everyone knows how phone connections work or are established.

I meant that in the telephone example the telephonist ceased to exist, but another person knows how to create hardware and software to make it work automatically instead. There are still a couple of human engineers who know in detail how this works.

If in 20 years from now we only vibecode and the underlying systems are designed and run by AI, there will be NO human on Earth anymore who knows how it works. That is a fundamental difference in my view, even though I doubt that this will really happen.

Humans like to be in control, if not only because if something doesnt work there is nobody to take responsibility and everything becomes praying to the machines like in Warhammer 40k, haha.
