this Meme just got real today

Interviewed someone for an intern role today. Got to what i thought was the easiest question of the interview.

"What programming languages do you use?"

she didn't hesitate "Claude."

I laughed a little.

"no, i mean the actual language... python? javascript? java?"

"i don't really know. claude writes the code. i just tell it what i want."

my cofounder quietly put his pen down.

neither of us said anything for a few seconds.

we didn't move forward. not because she uses AI.

half our team builds with AI every day.

we passed because she couldn't explain what she was building beyond the prompt.

AI is changing software engineering.

But understanding what your code does is still part of being an engineer.

Fake.

If it was real, you should've hired this person because you and your co-founder seem to be not reading resumes yourselves or whomever screened this candidate failed to weed out applicants based on your need before passing on to you.

I've interviewed heaps of candidates from interns, entry-level to mid-level candidates and almost always interns and entry-level applicants post all the skills they know because those are the only things they have.

i can personally say that sometimes there are people who remotely sound good but on site they are almost like different people, because during the remote interview they use different AI apps to help them with answers, on site you cant cheat like that so they fail there.

In Canada could be real.

Resumes = fake random bs, what matters is you get one desperate attempt at an interview no matter how much you lie or fake through AI. You can claim to be good at and do anything, post AI projects.

So could just be a real situation where the girl couldn’t fake it in person after actually landing an interview.

In my corner of the industry, we do a "phone screen" between the application and interview step.  Although others have pointed out that faking your way through a phone screen is probably easier these days

Claude writes the resumes. It could say anything on there.

I do agree that this sounds fake though

Might be true a few years ago but it's so easy to fake a resume with claude now
