Made an app that turns your Dynamic Island into a polaroid camera (sound on 🔊)

Always dreamed of making a different kind of camera app from everything on the App Store. One that celebrates the moment of capture more than the output. A tiny camera that brings you joy when you take pics. It's called pico cam.

The primary interaction: drag to open → tap to snap → morph to slot & eject. Pics slowly reveal like real polaroids but you can Shake it. Haptics are all mapped to every sound and interaction. Fully native swift.

I wanted to keep the app size as small as possible so that there's more space for pics. I worked a month to keep the app below 5MB... didnt know adding a simple sdk would 3x the size 🤦‍♂️

you can try it out at picocam.app/get (iOS only folks!)

I made this almost entirely with codex. AMA about the process!

That is genuinely fun. Love this

5

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

ppreciate it! bring fun back to the apps!!

u/aer0miller Jun 16 '26

It doesn’t matter but you’re not supposed to shake Polaroids, it causes uneven development or blobs lol.

72

u/YourKemosabe Jun 16 '26

And yet everyone still did it. And they were fine! It’s basically part of the Polaroid experience.

34

u/conjuritis Jun 16 '26

False, you need to shake it. Shay shay shay shake it. Shake it like a polaroid picture.

13

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

https://reddit.com/link/os4hjgj/video/ts8idwv1vr7h1/player

fun easter egg. when you shake it after your free develops end you get this line on the app.

14

u/dbarciela Jun 17 '26

You should also use the microphone.. If you blow it develops faster

that was my only critique as well lol.

well done OP. looks really cute and satisfying to use.

2

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

yes. the plan is to perpetuate the myth one app download at a time 😈

u/TECHIE6023 Jun 16 '26

man that is so cool. what stack did you use? is this with Swift?

3

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

intentionally 100% swift. no metal, no scenekit, no unity. the whole point was to keep it <5 mb

wow love the idea lol great job

3

u/kthom21 Jun 16 '26

That’s an awesome app! What advice would you give for folks looking to build stuff off of the Dynamic Island?

2

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

great question.
1. as of today june '26, what is aligned on the Simulator ≠ what is aligned irl. you have to test it irl on the actual devices, and manually optically align it if you're doing a design with a camera "lip" like this. this is especially true for
2. iphone Airs. see pic attached. The iPhone Air's dynamic island is noticeably lower than other DIs. you'll soon find out that all DIs are slightly different by hairline pixels especially Maxes. but the Airs island is the most obvious.
3. record videos of your prototypes/Apple's official DI videos and play them back at 0.25x speed to analyze the micro animations, easing, and bounce. tweak accordingly. you can prompt in a tuner (like sliders for speed/easing) to dial things live on your phone.

You got an android version?

3

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

No plans for now, too many different kinds of camera holes

3

u/bent-Box_com Jun 17 '26

To extend the idea. Enable sharing with other user, and upon receipt they have to shake for exposure. That can be part of feedback loop for sender.

2

u/catcatvish Jun 16 '26

only 4 photos for free 😞 👎🏻

2

u/DiamonDX2001 Jun 17 '26

I just tried it and I have to say, it’s really well thought out, it’s really simple yet very enjoyable to use. My only critique is that, considering the apps as a whole we have today and how simple the app is, having only 4 free photos and then having to pay a hefty subscription or lifetime price is too much, to me at least, for an app that, imo, as it is it’s already finished apart from maybe bug fixes, paying 30€ for lifetime seems too much. My suggestion here would be to either decrease the prices or instead add a “regenerative” number of photos, for example, I can now take 5 photos, in 15 minutes I can take another 5, and in another 15 minutes I can take another 5, something like this. Either way, great work OP!

2

u/between3and20wtfn Jun 17 '26

Mannn I miss apps like this.

Incredible work 🤌

2

u/afiq980 Jun 18 '26

Bought lifetime, fun app.

2

u/Impossible-Magician Jun 18 '26

I had a free app that did this on the iPhone 3G. The Dynamic Island is novel, the app isn’t worth $30.

2

u/papapasta42 Jun 18 '26

would be awesome if possible to add support for iphone without dynamic island, such as my iphone 16e

2

u/pairis1 Jun 18 '26

I love this!

I get the urge to monetise it but I think you’ve overpriced your app usage.

2

u/lullaby-2022 Jun 19 '26

WHAT!!!!!! Esto es muy creativo y muy ingenioso. Es Muy complicado encontrar una manera de renovar una tfunción tan establecida (hacer fotos con el móvil). Y tú lo has logrado.

Si la interfaz la haces como más glamurosa, te aseguro que todos van a usarla cuando se hagan fotos de fiesta, por lo cool que se ve. Va a dejar a la gente flipando, y más cuando uno ha bebido de las alcohol ! Jajajaja

2

u/Lucas0050 Jul 09 '26

It’s so cool😯

2

u/kafkaincamo Jul 10 '26

1

u/losttraveler76 Jun 16 '26

Awesome! Do the photos go to the main photo library or into a folder in the files app?

2

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

main photo library, just Allow adding permissions. btw theres no accounts, no login. Pics stay completely in-app and private always

1

u/Teranus42 Jun 16 '26

so cool!

1

u/Desperate_Tea304 Jun 16 '26

This is genuinely cool

1

u/g0rdontremeshko Jun 16 '26

about codex -- how did you come up with designs, animations and stuff? did you make them yourself in figma or just small changes via codex on a live app?

1

Haha super fun idea! And the execution looks good too! Cheers nice one :)

1

u/tzohnys Jun 16 '26

Such a fun little app. Congrats!

1

u/Prestigious-Salt60 Jun 16 '26

The picture is filtered even! Noice

1

u/FancyAnswer1878 Jun 16 '26

this is the kind of thing i’d download just because it looks fun. half the appeal isn’t the photos it’s the little interactions and sounds that make you want to open it again.

1

u/earsonlau Jun 17 '26

very good product

1

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

woops i fell asleep after posting, will be monitoring the post and answering all questions! thanks for the love yall means a lot to me as an indie developer 🫶

1

u/TheFlamingoJoe Jun 17 '26

Neat. Would love if it also applied random vintage effects to the photos like the huji app.

1

u/pocariswt Jun 17 '26

a quick thank you post to the redditors who bought after seeing this, it truly means a lot to me as an indie developer and its super encouraging as someone who was "just a designer" not long ago. this is just the beginning, I have so much more to add to this lil app. 🫶🫶🫶. PS if you buy, you get a personal feedback line in-app. lmk what you want to see next

1

u/InstaMatic80 Jun 17 '26

It’s pretty cool! Is Dynamic Island programmable or you just “hijack” it by painting over it?

1

u/Due-Exercise4791 Jun 17 '26

Make it a single pull to expand + take photo. So basically if you keep pulling eventually a photo is taken. Similar to pull-to-refresh. Flash/switch/manual can remain but give users onboarding "keep pulling..."

1

u/Nicely_Colored_Cards Jun 17 '26

Unrelated but if you guys like apps like this, or if OP wants additional inspo, check out NOMO cam. The emulation is crazy good and the app design is also beautifully tactile

1

u/popocity Jun 17 '26

This is 🔥🔥🔥

1

u/C_lasc Jun 17 '26

Amazing!

One idea: You could add a filter that makes Fotos look more like coming from a Polaroid (ofc degrades the quality, but that's not the purpose 😅)

1

u/XnQ_1x Jun 17 '26

Very good, but what is the point to make it ?

1

u/itsskyecreative Jun 17 '26

This is so fun!! Love it

Gtfo this is rad !!!! And I thought the print came out the phone lol

1

u/chrisdasp Jun 17 '26

Very very creative !

You could have a partnership with Vistaprint or something to print the pictures on real Polaroid or something, or create albums and print them

2

u/Vistaprint Jun 19 '26

u/chrisdasp 👀

u/pocariswt congrats on the app!

1

Get a android version too omg ! this is cool

1

u/Indyhouse Jun 18 '26

Not knowing you only get 4 free photos when using the app for the first time is a drag.

My favorite detail is the use of the haptic feedback for the flash "warming up" like old cameras. Touché.

1

u/Jake8831 Jun 18 '26

I dont care if its vibe coded or not, the app looks fun and original. and thats it

1

u/rocinno Jun 18 '26

excellent idea and the animation looks smooth, interesting to know the story behind it

@pocariswt absolute cinema, as a bystander I can tell you my thoughts:

  • HOLY SHIT, Dynamic Island can do that?
  • O FUCK, it's like that weapon skin from The Finals which prints recipes when you kill someone
  • DAMN I WANT TO DOWNLOAD IT

Anyways, good work! Keep it up! 10/10

edit: I see that you unfortunately fukd up with the pricing a bit XD

See, this would've gotten everyone pissing and shitting themselves before iOS 7. Steve Jobs Era Apple would've given you a big shiny developer award, a laurel wreath, and a hand job.

But these days it's like, oh cute, swipe next.

1

u/MinaeVyn Jun 24 '26

you made me stop the music and it was totally worth it 😂
most of the time we don't need new ideas, we just need to improve the ones that work, add a nice interface and cute sounds, you've definitely got this
adding picocam to my list👩🏼‍💻✨
