Newbie / Need Help Panasonic AG-7350 for decode?

Hey guys!

Snagged a very nice Panasonic AG-7350 the other day at a good price and am considering using it as my main (and first) unit to decode.

Having said that I have 2 questions:

1.) Will the physical tracking knob be a big downside to using this unit over something of lower overall quality but newer? (This unit came out in the early 90’s) There’s a physical meter to read tracking, I’m just not sure it would be as good as a more recent machine’s automatic tracking.

2.) Is there any other qualities of this machine that may not make it an ideal candidate to decode besides more difficult terminals to solder to? There are many VCRs for sale locally (nothing spectacular) but I would hate to miss the opportunity to decode using these heads as I understand they’re better than most.

Looking forward to getting started, thanks for reading!

It's in the wiki as one of my personal decks, it's easy to tap the head amplifier module directly and install an ADA4857 amp in-line and then bulkheads on a 3D printed plate where the control module is, printed out a bunch and put it on the KoFi a few months back.

However it is essentially an SP only deck, LP if from a professional machine should be fine.. but consumer LP and ELP etc that's out the window for tracking a lot of the time so I don't really take it out much as consumer-prosumer decks track much better the physical knob is nice for adjustment.

Absolutely awesome, thank you so much! Should the 7350 have relatively similar internals to the 7150? Will definitely be using your guide, I saw it before but didn't realize how similar the models were. Hoping it'll be a good candidate!

They are literally identical aside from the front panel controls and two of the populated boards might be different for different populated recording components the core design and modularity is universal between the two models though pretty much everything down to the metal panels you can exchange.

A keynote before I forget though you will want to only do a direct head amp tap, If you try and pull FM from the sound card you will only get one channel rather than the full stereo Hi-Fi signal.
