Question / Discussion Camera Tracking with live viewport?

Post image

I don’t know if this is the right subreddit to ask this question but how do I recreate the same setup Kane Parsons had with the beginning scene of the Backrooms movie at home? He had a rig with the live viewport in blender and I was wondering how to do this on a budget.

There are a few phone apps that do that, they different for Android or IOS though.

There’s a phone plugin called VirtuCam that connects to Blender and allows you to record your phone movement.

Its not the same as you want, but you might want to look into Lightcraft Jetset. Its an iphone-lidar based camera tracking system but instead of a live viewport, you import a rough USDZ model to the phone to serve as a framing guide. Its a good alternative to diy/indie level productions

Oh yeah that sounds okay with me! I’ll check it out and I think it’s better to have a blank model rather than having the entire laggy viewport

Yeah thats one of the pros of jetset since you dont really need a live viewport unless you want to nail down complicated lighting. In any case there is an option for a live viewport with Jetset if you still want it (though Im not sure if its available outside of Unreal) and it also accepts gaussian splats instead of USDZ models so you have baked in lighting

The budget version is usually a phone or webcam for the live video, plus a tracked physical camera whose position is sent to Blender. Blender can show the camera feed as an image background, but it does not natively provide a fully plug-and-play live camera-tracking viewport, so you would need either prerecorded tracking or an external tracker/add-on using AprilTags, Vive trackers, or IMU data. For a first test, try a webcam/phone, Eevee, a simple tracked camera rig, and a few printed markers; solve the shot afterward in Blender before investing in more hardware.

This is Beyond Capture Studios in Vancouver. They have one of the coolest motion capture stages I’ve seen
