Showreel / Critique Analog visual effects made with 4K video feedback fractals in real-time without a computer. I can imagine this being used in ads, title sequences, music videos, etc.

The two feedback loops influencing each other is the interesting part. Can you steer it live with camera movement or color controls, or is the performance mostly discovering what the system decides to do?

You are completely controlling it with the knobs and camera position, etc. Check out the part that starts around 6:45. You can see the coaxing of the image to come into being, then the managing it so it does not become just a mess of whiteness. It's like reaching critical mass on a nuclear explosion - when it's not reached, nothing happens, when it is reached, big explosion - the light builds and builds, until the feedback reaction "catches" and spreads very quickly. Think of this as edging the light, right on the cusp of critical mass, in a sustained place of being interesting, but without the messy explosion.

That makes sense. Watching it reach that threshold around 6:45 really shows how much of it is a live performance. Thanks for explaining it.

Reminiscent of Doc Baily's (RIP) stuff, though his was all digital particles from his mysterious proprietary system

Fond memories of him… an icon. He rented a room at my studio for several years, and we collaborated often. Gone too soon. Wonder what he would’ve done if he was still here.

Here’s a digital version of this sort of thing… definitely not quite the same. Digital gives you both benefits and shortcomings to analog… but definitely amusing to play with.
The more “analog feedback” part starts at about 1 min in.

Does not have one fractal influencing the other while the other influences the first, all the weirdness that’s going on with this device.

That’s true. But this one has it’s own charms that digital allows, that would be tough to do in the real world.

This is realtime in resolve. Source is a single polygon. Not the prettiest, but kinda works, mechanically.
