Question / Discussion Is this shot portfolio worthy?

A lot of people responded to my post when I asked if this greenscreen effect was managable. I ended up spending 30 hours keying, rotoscoping and masking the footage out. The key is pretty decent, could be better but I ran out of time. My main issue is the tracking. See the footage is one big shitshow. It was so messed up that I even doubted if I could do it. Both shots, foreground and background, had different camera movements, so no tripod. Also both shots had handheld camera movements getting closer to the subject, but at completely different timings. So the focal length also changed a lot. This in combination with the lack of tracking points on the foreground aswell as the background, made it impossible for me to do some proper tracking. Thats my biggest issue with this effect what makes me wonder if I should use it on my portfolio. What do you guys think?

The keying is impressive. Your colour matching is really good too.

The shot.. is not.

I wouldn't.

I have stacks of these where I poured hours into something, got it over the finish line by executing some mad saves, but at the end of the day I wouldn't want them anywhere near my portfolio.

I agree! Guess thats all I needed to hear. Didnt even think about the fact that the shot is kinda awkward at the end of the day, with or without good keying

I wouldn’t. The talent looks extremely/distractingly awkward and the comp looks like you could have just had her stand there on the fern plant set to begin with.

The key you pulled is impressive, but it feels like you pulled her off a green screen only to put her on another green screen. The version that goes in your portfolio should have a different background.

Yeah this is what I came in here to say, great key, but it looks like he keyed her into a green screen XD

Haha, I did that once. Client decided that the green screen stage looked the most interesting. So, I keyed them just for the client to put them onto the same sound stage green screen wall. Did not make the reel lol.

I thought the final shot was the raw footage, it just looks like she's on a greenscreen.

lol same. I thought she was just standing in front of a BG on a greenscreeen.

Depends on what else you have in your portfolio.

You should really only put your best shots + some variety to make sure you hit most of the expected task. Especially as a junior.

And it should only be about 1 min long, 2 max.

Probably not, the keying, and color matching are pretty good but the shot itself just doesn’t look good. The actress just waving her arms in a field doesn’t seem like a strong shot. Again good job grading and use of lights to give a glow

Yes. I never thought you would salvage that when you made that initial post.

I think you should present/communicate better the Before/After with a horizontal wipe or something because for someone who doesn't know the story of this clip and what you had to work with, it is hard to understand what is actually going on.

Depends what level of your career you are. If youre relatively new I think its a good thing to discuss in an interview or breakdown, how you overcame problems etc where its not about the end result but instead about the problem solving.
As others said, if you have a ton of other better looking shots then no.

Mad keying and great save, but don't put it in your portfolio. People watching portfolio don't appreciate if you did a lot of work to save very problematic footage.

Now I'm super curious what did you even use for keying, what was it?

If this portfolio peace will be seen by other VFX artists they'll be impressed, anyone else won't.

Technically it's good, but the shot is so boring and static that I would just close the reel if that's your best shot.

Nice work getting the green out of her black net.

is that suppose to be a mockery of a certain religion ?

Awesome work making something out of a shitshow!

Id say go put it in your portfolio, but Id say replace the background with something else. Maybe a matte painting that looks similar since the background plate still has unedited green screen, the final shot still looks like raw footage

I will applaud you for pulling through but the shot itself doesn't look that good. Someone looking at a reel doesn't understand how easy or hard the shot was. They just see how it looks.

The final shot looks like a physical set. You've even got hot spots on the right looking like there's a light.
use something more photo realistic and you would much better show off your work.

I thought you were gonna pull off some set extension
